We stayed here in April for 10 days and it was an amazing holiday. The setting is idyllic, the beaches are perfect, our villa directly overlooked the sea - the views are breathtaking! As for the "Italian manager", we actually found him very friendly and helpful! During my stay I heard that some guests complained that there standard rooms were bad - but our bungalow was all we needed!))

Room Tip: ask for chaley #6, you wont regret it

I literally don't know what to say about this place. We arrived having booked a Sea View Villa. Our villa did certainly not have a 'sea view' and was incredibly dated. The toilet leaked all night all over the bathroom, and the food at the restaurant was almost inedible. We complained to the Sri Lankan 'manager', and he admitted that all sea view villas were booked and he offered us free dinner and drinks to compensate. As we had a very short trip in SL, we were willing to pay more for quality accommodation, and this certainly wasn't it. After finding out the manager was in fact Italian, we asked for him. He was out surfing! This was one of a number of bare face lies the SL manager said to us. The Italian manager was never there when needed, and actually sat down in his board shorts to eat dinner when all the guests were eating in the restaurant! I was incredibly thirsty in the night and came to find some water at reception. There was no staff anywhere so had to do without. The grounds are beautiful and the beach stunning. What the place needs is ALOT of money spending on it, and an actual manager. 2-3 star hotel calling itself a 5 star establishment. Awful.

Room Tip: don't stay here!

We stayed one night but wished it could have been longer.the setting is idyllic....comfortable secluded chalets in beautiful gardens, with ocean views. There are two well maintained pools. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bar was very good and the restaurant ok, but on another occasion we would choose to eat at the locally run beach bar on the lovely quiet beach. The only negative point is that our driver told us his accommodation was dirty.

Eva Lanka was in former years a great place for ayurvedic treatments. It was closed for some time but now started off for a new try. The italian owners take care and all the staff is giving the best. The ayurvedic treatments are excellent. The Therapists are well educated and doing good.
The place is not really all renewed at the moment, but it's worth the money, especially the seaview bungalows.
Give the place a try. It is a very special and charming one.

Room Tip: Seaview bungalows are worth the money

I determined not to contribute this review but Agoda have emailed me four times, demanding a review and offering reward points for so doing. Their persistence has so aggravated me that I have decided to comply with their request and forward it to TripAdvisor as well as Agoda.

We arrived at the Eva Lanka after a lengthy mini bus trip from Colombo, following a long flight from China via Bangkok; our friends, whom we met at the airport, had travelled from the UK and had not slept for a very long time. We were all rather exhausted but excited and looking forward to a decent meal and a comfortable bed in our ocean side luxury suites, the best rooms in the hotel. However, this did not happen; the chap at the reception desk looked puzzled and disappeared for some considerable time, then returned and asked us to wait, a welcome drink was provided but we asked our driver to remain, as we had a premonition of disaster, encouraged by the raised voices emanating from the back office.

Our misgivings were well founded; no rooms were available, despite the presentation of our voucher issued by Agoda on full payment of the £2,000 cost. Telephone calls followed and to cut a long story short, and after a perfect demonstration of how NOT to treat ones clients, we were offered accommodation in an alternative hotel of much lower quality and cost, to that at which we had booked. We stayed in this hotel for two days but then managed to find alternative accommodation of a higher standard elsewhere. Our holiday was ruined by the incompetence of the hotel management or Agoda, it matters little, exactly whom was ultimately responsible. The Director of the hotel offered no solution to our problem and was generally unconcerned and proved himself incompetent. All calls to Agoda were achieved by me and it was I who sorted the problem.

I must say that Agoda, although unable to book alternative hotels, have since recognised their responsibility and reimbursed us for the extraneous expenses incurred and compensated us for the trouble, inconvenience and disappointment, which disrupted holiday plans, produce.

It is no fun to be dumped in a foreign country, miles from anywhere, hot, tired and hungry, with mosquitoes, making a meal of ones legs and with nowhere to stay. So, my advice to other travellers; to avoid disappointment, distress and frustration: check your booking with the hotel directly and make sure that all bookings and payments have been made by your agent, on your behalf and if your holiday is ruined by the incompetence of others, complain, demand compensation and if necessary inform ABTA and ultimately but as a last resort, take legal action against those who failed in their ‘duty of care’ to you, the client.

My impression of the Eva Lanka Hotel: I didn’t get past reception but the inefficiency, lack of care and complete indifference to our plight, displayed by the director and his assistant made me determined to avoid it like the plague in the future.

Stayed: December 2012, travelled with friends
