This was by far the best hotel we stayed on our trip to Taiwan. We booked Moon Double Room which had a great view of the lake. The room was spacious and spotless. The toilet, bathtub (with whirpool facility) and shower were separated. The amenities were great (they provided l'ocitane toiletries). It also had a living room. The staffs were friendly, polite and spoke good english. Free wi-fi worked very good. Located just in front of Ita Thao Pier if you want to take a boat ride around the lake. What else could we ask for? NOTHING!! Our only regret was we only stayed one night there.

I was utterly misled by the pictures shown in the hotel website - my fault actually. I had mistaken that the little resting area at the harbour overlooking the lake was PART of the hotel, but it was not. I had wrongly assumed that this hotel had a proper driveway for cars, but no. The lobby was so much smaller than what was shown in the photos. We wrongly assumed this was a large hotel. Our fault.

On the plus side, the room we had was huge. Shower facilities provided were good and the hotel even provided a small hair tye + floss! Thumbs up for that!

Internet was always cut off intermittently. The carpets were stained. You can still see dust particles at the top of the bedframe.

Overall, it is a pretty okay hotel, but I was looking for those opulently luxurious ones so this did not meet meet my expectations. The price paid for this room was not cheap either: the most expensive out of all the rather top-end hotels I booked for the 6 nights in Taiwan (including at central Taipei). I wanted another hotel at the other end of the lake but that was fully booked during my stay.

This hotel is at the smaller port of Ita Thao.....It's a small hotel.....We upgraded to a Lakeview room and it was huge.....Beautiful bathroom, separate living room and a balcony.....Fresh fruit in the room......Really comfortable......The breakfast is small but good.....We didn't eat at a restaurant for the 3 days were at Sun Moon Lake because the street food is so good......The staff at the hotel are very nice......There's coin operated do-it-yourself laundry at another hotel nearby and they walked us over so we didn't have to search.....When we left, a staff member drove us up to the bus stop with our luggage in a golf cart.....

We went for the cheaper option at the hotel (no view) as we were only staying one night.

The room was beautifully done with a very comfortable bed (although beware there's no privacy door for the toilet).

Brilliant spot to watch the sunset from the 10th floor balcony and the staff were more than happy to keep bringing beers up as we relaxed.

It's an early start if you want to get the bus to Alishan the next morning but the staff are happy to pack a boxed breakfast for you.

Restaurant is ok, but there's some great street food below (especially an aboriginal guy who does prawn in lettuce leaf and stuffed boneless chicken wings).

Tip: Book you bus ticket the day before you go to avoid stress and possibly miss the 8am bus as we did.

At Sun Moon Lake we had reservations at the Crystal Resort, located in Rihyue Village. It is a small luxury boutique hotel with only 20 rooms, There were three couples in our group and we had booked two lake-view and one interior room. They have were very beautifully appointed rooms in general, with maybe a tad too many mirrors to create the feeling of spaciousness. From the lake view rooms the breathtaking vistas mirror the serene beauty of the lake, especially in the misty mornings. And the marvelous panorama can be enjoyed, even when you are lying in bed. The interior room, on the other hand, only looked out at the walls of the adjacent buildings, just a few feet away, giving the room a very constricted feeling; but it was some 40% less expensive. Take the lake-view rooms and enjoy life.

For the lake view room, the price we paid was US$310/night, which is pricey for Taiwan, but actually about the same for similar lodgings in other fancy resorts in the world. But here the price includes half-board. They also have WiFi in the rooms. The staff may sound a bit formal and aloof at check in, but they are actually very good and most helpful and accommodating throughout our stay. And after chatting with them for a while, they were very pleasant and friendly. This is maybe partly cultural.

There are two main ferry terminals in Sun Moon Lake; the tranquil one is located just outside the hotel. The other one is located at the other side of the lake and it is quite busy because of the many larger hotels situated there. There is, therefore, not that much traffic around our hotel.

The hotel is located in a small friendly village, with obviously strong overtones for the tourist trade, but not overbearing so. There are little shops selling products and snacks from the region. You can get the colorful costumes of the local aboriginal Thao tribe, fruits, the very good local teas, and crisp, deep-fried small fish and shrimps for snacks. There are small restaurants and eating places catering to the visiting tourist.

Dinner at the hotel was an amazing multi-course presentation. The menu of the gourmet dinner is shown below. In addition to the 6 of us, we had two couples, business associates from Taiwan, as guests for dinner, and even they approved of the quality. The only problem I had was with the crabs; they looked beautiful, but they hardly had any meat.

Room Tip: The lake view rooms are expensive but worth it.

I did some research and in the end decided on this hotel praying that I've made the right choice. I'm very happy to say that I've indeed made the right choice. We were there for one night and had booked 2 rooms with lake view and a room with town view. From the time we checked in to our departure we loved our stay at the hotel. The staff were excellent, the rooms were beautifully furnished with very comfortable beds and Locitane toiletries were provided. The breakfast was good too. Sun Moon Lake have 2 ferry terminals. The hotel is situated at the quieter terminal as the large hotels are at the other one. It's a small boutique hotel, 4 rooms on each floor which suited us perfectly as it meant no tour groups! No doubt the hotel is not cheap but we're very happy with what we had paid for.

Got a lake view room, which has a clear unobstructed view of the lake, then sat at the ledge and drank coffee and tea, while admiring the view.

The service was excellent. The service staff can speak English, but I suspect it's quite a challenge for them. They became friendlier when they found we could converse in Mandarin. They then took the time to welcome us and explain what we could do around the lake.

Breakfast and dinner was provided. Breakfast was simple, with eggs, bacon, sausages and some vegetarian stuff. Dinner was an elaborate affair. The first night was a multiple-course meal, presented in a contemporary style, yet using traditional Taiwanese ingredients (e.g. taro soup, pork jelly.) The second night, the waitress told us they had prepared a separate menu for us. The spread was large and delicious, comprising of local steamed fish, local vegetables, fried quail etc.

The room was clean and comfortable. The beds were firm but improved when we added an additional blanket to lie on.

There's no heater though the website said there was. Most of the time, the temperature was at about 17 degrees centigrade throughout the hotel and the rooms, so it can be uncomfortable for those who are not used to the cold.
