“Be careful which resort you booked”
Reviewed 27 May 2013

Apparently there are 2 Harbor Resort in Sun Moon Lake area, one is the building by the harbour with views of the lake, the other is a tiny narrow block with street view and sounds included.

We were very very unfortunate to get the second one with the street view. Asked to change rooms and they were like sorry we are full. And apparently there are 4-persons room at a higher charge which is essentially 1 king bed and 1 sofa bed, my agent didn't specify but this was another story which I will not fault the hotel.

The second building seems like a hotel built specifically for the sex industry. The decorations and fittings were gawdy and really bad taste. Golden satin bed sheets, dubious looking bathtubs etc. And a ceiling that was half undone that made me think there used to be a mirror on top of the bed for you to view kinky actions. So yes, this hotel reeks of those cheap sex motels.

I've attached the pictures for you to make your own conclusions.
No drinking water by bottles, just this tap with hot and cold water, rather interesting.
Unfortunately street view means plenty of sounds so don't expect a quiet night what with the Chinese tour bus coaches speeding to and fro Sun Moon Lake.

Breakfast is to be taken at the other block which I assume is the main hotel, the one with the lakeview rooms. Breakfast selection was pathetic, just 2 counters, bread, cornflakes, porridge, 2 hot dish items and that was about it.

All in all it was a pretty bad experience, so please if you really do have to book this hotel, avoid this block at ALL COST and book yourself a Lakeview room.

I am surprised that there hasnt been more reviews written of this hotel.

At first glance, it looked rather rundown. If I am not wrong, it is a spin-off from a parent-chain just a few steps away called the Harbour Resort Hotel just by the harbour where you can take the motorised boats from point to point at the lake. This is because we were told we could have our free breakfast there 730am-930am. Anyway, at any one point, there would be a young lady sitting at the entrance asking if you have made a reservation. It took about a few times before they finally recognised us and stopped asking the same question again.

For 1500NT$, there really isnt much to complain about. The room was clean. Though not exactly spacious, it was good enough. We liked the built-in spa the best. Especially now that it is winter, soaking in the tub kept us nice, warm and toasty. The room is rather small. We came with a small shoulder bag each so that didnt take up much space. I reckon if you were to lug your huge luggage along, you might find that you wont have much room to open the luggage. So word of caution, travel light if you wish to stay in this hotel.

The hotel is easily spotted too. We took the High Speed Rail from Taipei Rail Station to Taichung (70NT$ each one way) and switched to bus. We bought the 660NT$ passport at the bus info counter which gave us a return bus ticket, 2-way cable car ticket, 1-way motorised boat ride, one day unlimited bus ride ticket and some other stuff (rental of bike, electric motorbike etc). The bus we took sent us directly to the Shuishe Visitor Information Centre. Retrace your way back a few steps and you will see Harbour Elite Hotel.

You have to do some research prior to your visit. We found out that had we missed today (2/1/12), the cable car would be closed for 3 days for maintenance. Thank god! Anyway, everywhere in Sun Moon Lake sells boat tickets and bus tickets. Even eating at a eatery would get you 70% off. So I suppose even if you don't purchase the passport at the bus info counter, you could still lay your hands on those discounted vouchers around the lake itself (even at the hotel!).

Be sure to stay for the sunset at the lake. We captured the lovely sun setting at the Itachao Cable Car Centre (they call it the ropeway centre). The sunray bursting through the clouds as it set was simply breathtaking. Honestly, that is the only attraction I felt. Sun Moon Lake is unfortunately very commercialised now. Hence, the only thing that is untainted by man is the nature.

There is street-food everywhere. So you wont starve. Even if nothing catches your eye, there is the good old 7-11 just opposite the hotel.

All in all, I give this hotel 4 stars. It would have been better if our room had a window that does not face the main corridor. If you didnt notice in time, you might have done a full monty without even realising. Also, there is no wardrobe or bedroom slippers. The floor was freezing cold from winter! Finally, the hotel staff didnt give us the right information. We arrived at the hotel around 230pm and were told it was too late to catch the cable car (which closes at 4pm daily). We were really disappointed as the cable car would be closed for maintenance the next 3 days. Luckily, we decided to give it a try anyway. And YAY! we actually managed to catch the cable car with plenty of time left do so some shopping for souvenirs too.

We stayed here and paid TWD$3000 per night. Expensive!! the inbuilt spa was good and comfortable. Spacious apartment. However, the fittings were very poor - a broken bedside cabinet, very average breakfast option, leak in the roof above the toilet, leaking shower door.

We would not stay here again. Please bear in mind that good maintained quaity accommodation (hotels) at this price range in Taiwan is hard to find.
