“Modern, clean and homely”
Reviewed 30 July 2012

Skylight B&B is a very comfortable and clean small hotel with very modern fittings. There is a remote control for the lights, radio and TV and a relaxing sunken bath with stone tiles. Toiletries, a kettle with tea and coffee, indoor slippers and mineral water are provided. There is supposed to be wifi in the room but I could only access it close to the door and not other parts of the room.

The staff are very friendly and make the stay a homely experience. There is a choice of Chinese and Western breakfast. I opted for the Western breakfast which had a good variety, including eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, mushrooms, toast, fruit and orange juice.

The hotel is easily accessible about two minutes' walk from the Ita Thao pier, but this was inconvenient for me as I had to take the ferry back to the Shuishe pier (where the bus station is) to catch a morning bus back to Taichung. If you have time to spare, this is fine and the Ita Thao area is probably a little quieter and less touristy than the Shuishe area. There are lots of food options near the hotel for meals, such as small restaurants, eateries and food and fruit stalls. However, if you are trying to catch the sunrise, apparently Shuishe is a better location. This may not be a major consideration as the sunrise at Sun Moon Lake is said to be quite elusive - I did try to hike up the Maolan trail in the early hours of the morning but the mist obscured the red hues of the sun and I only glimpsed a very diffused and faint pinkish-orange patch. The misty views were worth the 30 minute walk uphill though.

All in all, the hotel was very good value for the price and worth staying in if you are looking to stay in the Ita Thao area.

After a couple of days in Tapei, we did not expect much from this place, so far from the capital. But it was totally amazing! There are 10 rooms in this B&B which to me was more like a 5 star hotel. The designer certainly knew what he/she was doing with this place. Everything was very well thought through. I was impressed with the Grohe taps and Viceroy and Boche sink and great toiletries in the room. The kids loved playing with the control panel for the TV and lights and we spent a good few hours lounging in the room, watching movies on cable. We had a room 3 bed room on the 7th floor which had an excellent view of the lake. And the best bit was the sunken bath which the 3 kids played in like a swimming pool. A fantastic place to stay and we'll definitely go back!

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors have a better view of the lake, but it doesn't really matter as break...

When I booked Skylight, I thought it was a traditional homestay (minsu). However, it was more like a boutique hotel. Decor is modern and facilities are comparable to a 5* hotel. Located at the Ita Thao part and on a busy food street, there is lots to do and see. After that, the hotel provides a quiet retreat. Would reccomend it to anyone planning to stay over at SML.

This is a great place to stay in Ita Thao, which is on the southern side of Sun Moon Lake. The rooms are spotless, the breakfast is great, the location is perfect, the staff is wonderful. The rooms are very, very nice. The hotel is only a couple of minutes from the pier, two minutes from the around the lake bus. This is a "minsu", a family run Bed and Breakfast, as opposed to a hotel chain. You are treated like family. We were so sad to leave here. This hotel is right in the middle of the action. I would suggest visiting Ita Taho during the week. On weekends and holidays the place is packed. We were there during the 2/28 holiday and the streets were mobbed. During the week it was much quieter. You cannot go wrong here at he Skylight B&B. It has been open for only a year and everything is sparkling clean. Rooms are very quiet. The quality of the fixtures and bedding is first class. I would rank this 5 stars without the least bit of hesitation.

If you have a lot of luggage, the best way to get here is to take a taxi from Taichung for about %1500 NT direct to the hotel. Be sure to have the address in CHINESE. If you don't have much luggage take the Nantou shuttle bus from Taichung to Shueishe pier, $180 NT and then take the ferry downstairs from the bus station, directly across the lake to Ita Thao pier. Get off the pier, go about 100 feet to the next street on the left and then walk up the street about 200 feet. The hotel is on the left.

We stayed in family room on 6th floor, no climbing needed as lift is available. Room is better than expected, fitted with high tech panel touch sensor for TV, Aircon and Lightings for different ambience. Best feature has to be the sunken stone bath tub just like a mini steam bath, kids thoroughly enjoy soaking for hours. Beds are huge and pillows are nice and firm, however, pillow cases smelt funny. Owner is friendly and provide valuable advice not only on SML but Hualien and Taipei too. Breakfast was sumptuous and dining on roof top with lake view is really awesome. Highly recommended for family with kids.
