We stayed in a family room for 3 nights (two queen-size beds). This rooms have no good views but are very spacious. The standard rooms are facing the green garden/hill and are having a balcony. The family rooms are facing the street without a balcony. For breakfast you have to go to the other chalet-type hotel at the lake, 1min away. With the buffet breakfast you have a good choice: fruits, cereals, warm Chinese/Japanese and Western food, the coffee and juices are awful. From the restaurant you can see the swimming pool (no glass wall) and especially hear the people running in the gym or playing billiard, it is a bit noisy and annoying. I cannot recommend the restaurant for dinner, expensive and not tasty at all. The lobby at the hotel is maybe good for smoking but not for relaxing, right beside the car park so in busy times lot of exhaust fumes... But for the price and the location it is a good choice!

The Lealea Garden Hotel-Sun Moon Lake - Moon is a new annex to the chalet-type Lealea Garden Hotel.
Room: good size, modern furniture, comfortable beds (no reading lamps), two chairs and a small round table, desk with a chair, TV, minibar, safe (was not working, had to be replaced), coffee/tea maker, complimentary bottled water every day, free WLAN access. Small bathroom.
Restaurant (at the Lealea Garden Hotel, 2 min walk): breakfast is Chinese fare, toast and one kind of jam available. Dinner: we had a very disappointing set dinner for 550NTD per person; the fish dish was ok, the pork dish was 95% fat, and the chicken dish was 95% fat skin. The following evenings we went to the Fleur de Chine Hotel for their buffet dinner: huge selection of excellent foods, at twice the price however, but a hundred times better!
General: modern building, quiet, free parking. We would go there (but not eat there) again

This is a nice property. It had a nice lobby, attentive staff, and the rooms were modern. My local friend picked the room and I was surprise a hotel of this class had no towels. In all my travels this is the first time I've ever experienced this. I had to go to 7-11 to buy a towels, and you are limited to the towels that are the same size as face clothes.

This side of the lake (south east) is at the Ita Thao Pier which is good because it is quieter and close to the cable car (which I recommend). The problem is that to the buses that go to Taichung and the HSR only leave from the North part of the lake (Shuishe). Public transport around the lake has limited options. A bus ride from the the Shuishe to Ita Thao took us a good hour, and the bus ride is uncomfortable because of the wild turns the bus driver takes around the lake. A bus we took from the cable car to wenwu temple did not follow the schedule. The boat is probably the fastest and cheapest (15 minutes) for 100nt a person, but it stops running at 5pm. It would have been great to know this upfront. This hotel has a shuttle, but it only run twice in the morning. We saw the shuttle parked beside the hotel most of the time. One night we came back late from Taichung because we decided to stay longer. The bus dropped us from Taichung hsr to Suishe, but all the buses around the lake had stopped. It must have been around 9:30pm or so. Shops were closing. We called the hotel to see if they could pick us up (15 min ) drive, but they were unwilling and offered us a taxi for 700nt.

We declined and tried to rent a scooter from a shop, but it was an old scooter and when I couldn't start it his wife decided to not let us rent it anymore. We ended up getting a cab that the local police got for us for 600nt. This made us quite angry at the hotel for not informing us and leaving us hanging like that especially for what you pay for this hotel. I would suggest getting your own car or scooter to get around if you're prepared to stay on this side of the lake.

The breakfast buffet is alright. It has a nice location with windows right by the lake. The gym area is really small and a decent sized pool that no one used. There are some lunch options near the hotel and a 7-11 closeby that doesn't close.

Hope that helps.

This is the hotel that we stayed over at Sun Moon Lake during our revisit to Taiwan in December 2013. There are two Lealea hotels in Sun Moon Lake, this being the new one that carries the word “Moon” in its name. We booked two quad rooms for our travelling party of 8 persons. The quad room is spacious with two queen beds and a spacious bathroom. One of our rooms was upgraded to a room with balcony that had a partial view of the lake. Our room cost included breakfast served at the older Lealea hotel which was just a few minutes walk down the road. Our children borrowed bicycles from the hotel to ride the short distance into town and lake front. We liked the hotel overall.

The hotel is located next to the lake but we ended up with a tree line view with a partial lake view. We didn't care because all you have to do is go outside and stare at the lake all day if you want. I liked the room but the only drawback was the small bathroom. There are plenty of USA outlets to plug in your electronics.

Room Tip: Make sure to include breakfast with room rate

Becareful with what you're booking here!! If the price is very cheap like what we did from Booking.com, this means you will get the room at another building away from the lake. It is "close" to the lake, but not next to the lake. The breakfast room has very good view of the sun moon lake.

The worst part of the stay was that we found out the highest compartment floor in the closet had a very very thick and grey layer of dust that seemed to be not cleaned for a long...long....long....time. I wouldn't think this kind of hotel could call itself 5 star hotel with such a quality. This hotel was actually not right next to the lake as shown on the booking.com. We got a small room (301) almost facing only concrete. But for the price of it, we can't complain. The breakfast took place in another building right next to the lake and there seems to be short of stuff to take care of incoming customers.

Room Tip: don't choose room 301. it feels like a prison room.
