This is a nice and beautiful park. You can go walking, but better go there on a bicycle. There are many bicycle lanes. Many different kind of trees and well maintained. There is a kiosk for some food and drinks. In the eastern part , near the ocean is a big lake, suitable for swimming in fresh water.

Ditto other reviews regarding the breath-taking scenery and crystal-clear lake. What struck us most is the locals who also hang out here. We saw an aborigine tribe gathering on the beach, a few Taiwanese temple workers eating their bento on the side of the road, and a few elderly veterans taking fresh air under the trees. My kids were fascinated to hear their war stories! This rapidly-diminishing generation has so much to tell!

We rented bikes ($150 NT/ea) for my son who's 8 and my mother who is 72. We rode around the Taitung Forest Park with our tour guide (We stayed at Toyugi Hot Springs Resort, and booked this half-day tour with them). It's about 1 1/2 very easy ride on a nicely paved bike path. The three-color ocean of Taitung is breathtaking. We stopped by the bird's nest sculpture and Pipa lake. I didn't even know that orchids can grow on trees, not to mention the gigantic leaves and the brilliant colors we encountered as we rode around the park. Rent a bike, put on the sun screen, breathe in the fresh air of Taitung. Experience nature like you've never experience it before. This by far is way better than Kenting! (too many tourists) I am so glad we took a detour to Taitung before we head to Hualien.

We really did not have enough time to view everything this huge park had to offer but what we did see was well tamed nature. Upon entering the park, a group of young people were having fun playing ball on the green lawn behind the restrooms.

Then a long road ahead with many maps of the park at strategic locations so we chose to go to Pipa Lake which from afar looked dirty but upon closer inspection, the water was so clear that it was the vegetation growing under water that we thought was garbage.

This is not just a tourist park, the locals come as well, but it is very well kept. Going around on a bike will be the best way to see as much as you can. There are bike rentals outside and inside the park and for a non-biker like me, there are bikes that can seat 2 people!

After you work up a thirst and an appetite, you can walk out the main entrance of the park to straight to Fruit Street (5 traffic lights) for quite a variety of food places or if after 5pm, even more since the night market would be open as well then.

Not because scary things come out to play, but the biking trail that goes out from the park has absolutely no lighting at night. Roadworks are still in progress so perhaps that will change in a few months' time. But in the meantime, finish up your cycling by sundown! The park is lovely though, and the Pipa Lake absolutely crystal clear - very peaceful little park in the middle of the city.
