Although the Gardens' website lists only certain days when it is open, we emailed and arranged with Linda (Lin) the owner to visit privately at the same time as two other people who wanted to see the gardens.
Lin welcomed us and offered some insect repellent just to make sure we were comfortable on our tour, though it wasn't particularly "buggy" as it turned out.
The two-hour tour of her gardens, which she has painstakingly carved out from the jungle that she and her husband moved into 16 years ago, is excellent. She is deeply passionate about the trees, shrubs and plants she has gathered from around the world, and has a wide range of knowledge about each.
She is also full of information about the animals, birds, frogs and insects that inhabit the gardens. We saw some green ibis and a poison dart frog, for example.
There are some uneven parts of the walk, and quite a few steps, as the gardens stretch over the sides of hills. As you will sometimes be off the path, where it can be wet and slippery, good footwear is recommended.
We finished the tour with Lin providing welcome refreshments in the form of fresh coconut water and lemongrass tea.
The cost was $15 per person (the tour is for a minimum of four).
