Owner description: Finca Los Monos (the Monkey Farm) is situated on Isla Colon, the largest island in the enchanting archipelago of Bocas del Toro, , Panama. The islands enjoy a steady temperature of between 80 and 93 degrees (27 C – 33 C) all year round, with adequate rainfall to keep them lush and humid. Over the years we have created a magnificent garden with large collections of heleconias, gingers, palms, flowering trees, fruit trees, spices and ornamentals. New plants are constantly being added to the property.

Although the Gardens' website lists only certain days when it is open, we emailed and arranged with Linda (Lin) the owner to visit privately at the same time as two other people who wanted to see the gardens.

Lin welcomed us and offered some insect repellent just to make sure we were comfortable on our tour, though it wasn't particularly "buggy" as it turned out.

The two-hour tour of her gardens, which she has painstakingly carved out from the jungle that she and her husband moved into 16 years ago, is excellent. She is deeply passionate about the trees, shrubs and plants she has gathered from around the world, and has a wide range of knowledge about each.

She is also full of information about the animals, birds, frogs and insects that inhabit the gardens. We saw some green ibis and a poison dart frog, for example.

There are some uneven parts of the walk, and quite a few steps, as the gardens stretch over the sides of hills. As you will sometimes be off the path, where it can be wet and slippery, good footwear is recommended.

We finished the tour with Lin providing welcome refreshments in the form of fresh coconut water and lemongrass tea.

The cost was $15 per person (the tour is for a minimum of four).

Good value.

Thank Simon H

Not only beautiful flowers and variety of tropical plants and animals but also the knowledge acquired made this tour a wonderful experience. Our tour guide answered all the questions with great expertise and confidence. Anybody who wants to understand tropical surroundings would benefit greatly from this tour. One of the most beautiful places I've been in Panama. Photo ops abound! Colors and shapes are amazing! A fantastic way to spend part of the day...
Highly recommended tour!

This tour was one of the highlights of our trip to Panama. The woman who created the garden is the tour guide and she tells a wonderful story of how it came to be. She also know every plant, where to find certain birds, and where to find monkeys. The tour ends with refreshments.

It runs at least 20 hours and includes a good bit of walking. Depending on the season bug spray might be nice to have. Tours are only a couple days a week so check availability.
