“be careful - stolen deposit”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2009

Must be a nice place but never went there. I tried to change the dates of my stay - but the management took my deposit anyway. I am sure they are nice folks but this left a bad taste in my mouth. I've been to Bocas and the Puerto Viejo area many times and appreciate the flexibility of hotels/hostels in the area. These guys don't play by those rules.

Be careful when registering for this place online - read the fine print!

We did not steal any deposit. This guy placed a reservation for 2 night and made our standard 50% deposit. He then canceled 2 weeks before arriving (10 days to be exact). On our reservation system, web page and registration confirmation it says you must cancel withing 30 days to get a full refund. We do not get many last second booking being a remote location so we need time in order to rebook. We are also a small family run business with just a few rooms so we did not protect our buisness with these cancellation policies.

We even offered to apply his deposit as a credit towards a future booking but he refused and instead said he would write negative reviews about us which he did here.

We would never take anything from anyone and have no idea why us following the rules on a policy clearly stated in multiple places would get us this review.

We flew into Bocas Del Toro early in the morning, arriving around 9:00am. On arrival to Bahia Del Sol we met the owner, Jack. Immediately Jack made us feel like we were home. He pointed us to a good restaurant in town for breakfast and told us our room would be ready when we returned. Which it was. The house is beautiful, located right on the water with a boat deck on the back, where you can view the most spectacular sunsets on Bocas. Jack's employee "Roberto" was a delight. Roberto a native Indian provide us a insight into the Indian culture of Panama. He would assist in any matter, no matter how small it was. He was also a wealth of information about the island and where the locals went to decompress and eat.

Best service ever. Jack, the owner, arranged/suggested many things for us to do in the area. Roberto, Jack's employee, went out of his way to make our stay terrific (inlcuding taking us on a private island tour). Although I went here with a buddy, I wouldn't hesitate bringing my wife. Great place. Due to how the B&B is situated, you will interact with the other guests quite a bit. For us, this was a great experience. We ended up buddying up and had a terrific time. Bocas is a bohemian place, so expect this when you go (leave your pretensions at home). I already miss Jack and Roberto and will definitely stay at Bahia del Sol again.

I really couldn't possibly offer a higher recommendation for a hotel. Our trip to Panama was fantastic and Bahia del Sol was absolutely the highlight.

I recently stayed at Bahia del Sol with a group of friends for 3 nights. We are all in our 20s and from the U.S., but the hotel was full of people of all ages from around the world that all seemed to be having a great time.

Jack, the owner was one of the best hosts any of us have ever encountered. He took care of everything that we wanted to do while in Bocas, cooked wonderful breakfast, enjoyed conversation, and was always there to make sure that our stay was the best that it could be. He arranged for boat/fishing tours for us, gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and sites around Bocas, and even gave us advice for places to visit around Panama after we left Bahia del Sol. Every person I traveled with had the same reaction upon leaving- we can't wait to return back and visit Jack and Bahia del Sol in a few years.

The whole experience was fanfastic. Roberto, his assistant constantly kept the place clean, took care of laundry and kept the fridge stocked with beverages for the guests. Jack arranged for a boat trip for us with his friend Sully, who was a great tour guide, and took us to many desintations we would have missed otherwise.

The six of us stayed in the suite upstairs, which easily slept 4 (we slept 5 comfortably there every night) and the bedroom immediately next to it. Both rooms were very nice. The adjorning property, which Jack also owns, has very nice rooms, and are a little bit cheaper than the rooms in the main property. We had one of these rooms for one night and they are honestly just as good.

The location was great for us. The beach was closer than we could have ever imagined- literally a 2 minute walk. There was a store to purchase food and drinks close by, some restaurants/bars to get food and drinks in the immediate neighborhood, and the town was a moderate (15-20 minute) walk, or a $1 cab ride away.

If the reading the other reviews, it is true that this may not be for everyone- if you are looking for a large commerical resort, or are looking for a luxury hotel, than this (and maybe bocas in general) may not be right for you. All the things that people may have difficulty with are clearly indicated on Bahia's site- the water can temporarily run out, it is located in the middle of a real bocas neighborhood, so you will interact with locals (who in our opinion were perfectly pleasant) and there is trash around the surrounding buildings. None of this bothered us, and this was all greatly outweighed by our fantastic experience. You should also consider Bahia del Sol offers a much more personal experience where you get great advice on where to go during your stay, and the price is a fraction of the larger resorts.

If you are a relatively low maintenance traveler, this really is the perfect place to stay. Do yourself a favor and book a few nights at Bahia and enjoy yourself while you are there!

We are two couples who stayed there for a week.
We liked the location, it is a regular neighborhood. Very good for the traveler who actually
wants to experience another country. After a day, you should feel very comfortable there.
Owner Jack is very helpful, will give you advice on anything, from eating to suggestions to day trips, he also makes a great breakfast. Our rooms were great, this is a bed and breakfast, not a Hilton. If you want a Hilton experience you should stay at one. I have stayed at many B &B's and think this experience is so much better than a regular resort. You actually get to interact with people and are more like family than like client and staff.
Very comfortable, great conversations with owner and guests.

We stayed in this hotel at the same time that the last guest did. I must comment on the 'management response' The neighborhood is a lot worse than 'not Paris'. There was garbage all over the street. I read that it was because of the big storms they had had there, and that nothing is being done to clean it up. The constant rain makes everything worse, especially since there is standing water with fish swimming in it, which means that it has been there for some time. This is not really that typical of the rest of Panama as the owner's son said. This area is dirtier than others we had visited. We liked the owner and the fact that we were able to book online. This was the only hotel in Bocas where we were able to do this, and made life so much easier for us since we were already in Panama when we decided to stay there. It was Carnival weekend, so we probably got the last (and worse) room in the hotel. It was dark and depressing, the first room on the left as you come in. It sounds as if there are some much nicer rooms in this hotel from what other guests have said. We liked Jack, the owner and his little cat. The breakfast was very good.

I believe this couple only stayed with us for one night and stayed in our back room which has AC. This room is in the back of the house and has a sealed window because of the AC. Based on this review we are going to unseal the window to provide more light to this room even though this is the only complaint we have gotten.

I think you need to stay with us at least a few days to get a feel for the charm of Bocas and overlook some of the downsides of visiting a third world island.

Glad to know we took care of you well and the customer service will always be 5 star at Bahia Del Sol.

I stayed at Bahia Del Sol for a few days and found it to be a charming bed and breakfast. The owners are very pleasant and try to help with any concern their guests may have, from laundry to travel suggestions. My room was big, had a nice balcony with a view of the ocean, and a full bathroom and shower. It's about 2 minutes from a swimming beach (not the greatest beach as the surf can be a little high, but probably the best in town, as Bocas town is not famous for great swimming beaches), and close to stores, bars, and restaurants. I thought the place was a good value, although if you're on a budget there are some cheaper places that aren't as nice nearby.
