La loma is amazing, and words cannot express how wonderful our 4 night stay was. Henry and Margaret are perfect hosts, food (and drinks!) are exquisite, and the calm of the jungle is wonderful. Do not miss La loma if you are in Panama! We cannot wait to go back!

I have traveled to various places in Central America and throughout the world. La Loma rates at the top of the places I've stayed and I'll explain why:) I wanted to feel like I was off the beaten path yet be comfortable. La Loma offers exquisite views from the rooms which are on the lush hillside. The outdoor shower was a huge plus in my book. The rooms have a very simple design which suits the environment, but they are extremely comfortable...especially the beds!
One of my favorite touches? Delicious coffee and homemade muffins delivered to your door in the morning...before your big breakfast! The food was amazing- some local flavors/ingredients and plenty of it.
It's tough to say my favorite part of La Loma because the atmosphere and food was so wonderful, but I think the staff takes the cake! Henry and Margaret, the owners, were nothing but gracious and accommodating. We really enjoyed spending time with some of the other staff (Jak, Bri, Mr. Kelly, and Roger). You could tell every one of them genuinely wanted to be at La Loma.
I will definitely be back! It's just a matter of time. What a special place they Henry and Margaret have created!

Would that there were more than 5 stars or a rating beyond excellent . . . .
It's impossible to name the best aspect of La Loma: the fresh, delicious food; the gorgeous setting, both the natural and the man-made; Margaret and Henry, the charismatic and solicitous innkeepers (while we were there, Brie and Jack, a charming young couple, were assisting Henry and Margaret) doubling the attention we received; the fabulous coffee and muffins delivered to the cabin each morning. We loved kayaking among the mangroves; hiking around the property; snorkeling; learning about chocolate production from Henry (and enjoying the marvelous chocolate desserts); chatting with Margaret and Henry; and relaxing in our cabin's hammocks, where we were always treated to the sight of a new bird species or the resident mother sloth and her baby.
La Loma is an amazing place, luxurious and rustic simultaneously with a perfect mix of relaxing and active endeavors. The care guests receive reflects the love and attention that Margaret and Henry have put into creating this marvelous respite. We highly recommend a stay there!

Room Tip: We stayed in the rancho closest to the lodge, surrounded by foliage and hummingbirds. The three cab...

I almost didn't want to write a review of La Loma, so as to keep it a secret, but apparently the cat is out of the bag. This place is amazing. The other reviews provide details, and they are all spot-on. The cabins make you feel like you are sleeping in the open air of the jungle (which you are), but in full creature comfort (which you also are). We had a a mother sloth and her 2-day old baby take up residence in the tree right outside our cabin while we were there. I worried that it would be too hot, too muggy, there would be too many bugs -- and none of these were true! We were there in mid-January, and it wasn't too hot or too muggy or too buggy. It was just delightful. Henry and Margaret and their great staff impart a laid-back vibe that, on top of the great food, nature, and fresh coffee delivery in the morning, will make you never want to leave. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Bocas. Seriously. Plan a few extra days here if you can, because once you get there, you'll wish you had.

Also, my husband and I are birders and other reviewers haven't mentioned how great the birding is around La Loma. The place is buzzing with hummingbirds, multiple species of manakins, parrots, tanagers, etc., and on a trip they'll take you on up a river that spills into Bahia Honda, dozens of other species you can see as you paddle (or are paddled) up the river. Their guide is incredibly sharp-eyed and -eared, and later Henry took us to a manakin lek that is right by their property where you can see the golden-collared manakins doing their odd lekking thing.

ps the night sky is jaw dropping gorgeous.

Bocas town is interesting but after a couple of days we decided to try for a couple of nights in the jungle at La Loma. As part of our 2 week trip, we had wanted to experience the Panama Jungle and see some local birds and wildlife but plans hadn't worked out. However, by phone and then internet, we lucked out and were able to stay 2 nights at La Loma. The open but private layout of the cabins / lodges was great with good views of the jungle and the bay. However, sandflies (or no-see-ums) or as they are called locally, chitras are a problem. Take some good 30+% DEET as environmentally correct and better smelling citonella doesn't seem to work. Take some good after-sting lotion such as calamine lotion to stop the itching. You don't have to be in the jungle to get stung as one evening at Bibi's on the Beach while we dined, the sandflies also dined. Bibi's had repellent available free near the bar.
At La Loma, the food was good, the host Henry and hostess Margaret were great and we enjoyed our time there. We saw a variety of colourful bird and the hosts helped identify them. We also saw a female sloth with a 2 to 3 week old baby.
We had good weather there but we did have an interesting wet experience heading back to Bocas. A strong wind whipped up the waves between the islands and we arrived in Bocas soaked to the skin. Wrap your paper valuables such as passports and cash in plastic bags. The staff had wrpped our luggage in plastic, so they arrived dry.
Highly recommended.

Well, not really. La Loma Jungle Lodge is the perfect place for the city dweller to experience life in the jungle.
Innkeepers Margaret and Henry have created a wonderful B&B with creature comforts like comfortable beds (sheltered by mosquito nettting), a flush toilet and hot shower. After settling into to your hut, you will not miss walls and enjoy the open floor-plan of your place in the jungle. Car alarms are replaced by a cacophony of natural sounds, which make you wonder, which animal or bird made them. The lodge area with communal table and open kitchen is perfect for conversations with fellow travellers and freshly prepared meals are excellent. Yes, choices are limited, but you are on an adventure and maybe it is time to let go of your daily routines.
Although you have many choices of activities at La Loma (the staff is very accommodating to find the right acitvity for you), my main focus was on the Chocolate Farm.
Immediately after my arrival in the late afternoon, a group of guest and I took the cocoa farm tour, guided by Henry, who explained to us the flora and fauna of the farm. If you are a serious chocolate lover this is a must!
The next morning, after enjoying a leisurely breakfast, I had a nice conversation with Margaret about chocolate making and chocolate in general. Meanwhile their chocolate maker Bolivia ( yes, like the country) was busy roasting dried cocoa beans.
The most beautiful aroma of freshly roasted cocoa beans filled the air and eating a freshly roasted cocoa bean makes you forget all the terrible chocolates you have eaten.
The beans are cooled, the outer skin is removed by winnowing and you end up with cocoa nibs.
No fancy equipment is used for all these steps, just the skillfull hands of an experiened chocolate-maker and a modified
hand-cranked meat grinder.
A hot chocolate blend of cocoa solids, cocoa butter and spices is produced, as well as as a rustic chocolate made from cocoa solids, cocoa butter and sugar. Delicious!
If you want " them to leave the lights on for you", this is not your destination.
But if are looking for adventure and romance in a beautiful environment this is the destination for you!

La Loma offers an exciting yet pampered way to experience Panama's rain forests. Meals are exceptional and hosts very friendly and hard working to provide for your every need. The rooms have open walls with an intimate view of the jungle. We had monkeys coming by regularly and two sloths as well. It was fun seeing the birds and wildlife from our room. The snorkeling tour was fun and the nearby beaches beautiful. Some people may not enjoy the rustic setting right in the forest or the wet climate. For us, it was wonderful.
