“Already planning a 2nd trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014

Before you read on, you should know that I am not the type of person who visits the same place twice. At least, before I visited Casa Cayuco- I wasn't!

My college friend and I visited in Oct 2013 and stayed in Pelicano. It was the highlight of our Central America trip! The entire staff welcomed us like family. David and Suzanne are the most genuine B&B owners I've ever met. The food was amazing (No really, think of the best meal you've ever had and then make it better). We toured the chocolate farm and took advantage of the numerous snorkeling trips with Sebastian. The wifi allowed me to keep in touch with work (and minimized my stress) but the overall atmosphere made me want to forget about work all together.

I'm so excited to be booking my second trip there and know it will be even more amazing than the first. I hope that as you read this review you look at their website and book a trip so you can experience it for yourself.

Casa Cayuco is a special place, that my husband and I were fortunate enough to find. We spent 9 days here, and woke up each day to a new adventure and relaxation. These memories have become some of our favorites. Dave and Suzanne are great hosts, who genuinely care about Casa Cayuco, their staff, the island and it's people, and your stay.

The staff becomes a beautiful part of your trip - They keep the place incredibly clean, know all the wildlife/best spots on the island and in the water. The meals created by them become a favorite memory, leaving you with the craving to be woken up by the sound of a conk shell for breakfast, knowing there is a full day of unique, fresh and delicious meals ahead. The staff will try to stay out of your way, but if you reach out to them a little they'll make your trip unforgettable.

We mixed up our days with taking excursions and just hanging out on the island. The excursions are definitely worth checking out - you'll get to visit a pristine island, see dolphins, or some of the best snorkeling in the world. Other days were spent visiting the village, walking through the rainforest, kayaking, paddleboarding, or just reading a book on the porch of our cabin. The property is beyond beautiful, built by one of their local residents and staff.

You'll never get tired of the communal meals with other travelers, the food, warm/perfect water, endless variety of wildlife, adventure and the people.

Casa Cayuco is an incredible eco-lodge in the beautiful island setting of Bastimentos. I stayed here with a small college group that studied primate behavior and conservation in
Central America. Dave and Suzanne were wonderful to chat with, attentive to our needs and had loads of local knowledge. They were especially enthusiastic about the various excursions that they offered. We visited the local chocolate farm, and went snorkeling minutes away between our classes and field studies on the Island. The food was especially gourmet in such a remote setting, served in an open family style beach lodge. The attention to detail, friendly environment and wonderful staff made our trip feel relaxed and worthwhile. We couldn't have been happier with our stay here with Dave and Suzanne!

We stayed at Casa Cayuco with our 7 and 12 year old children. What a wonderful experience! The beach was great, swimming, shell hunting, paddle boarding, kayaking, floating on rafts. The dock was perfect for taking a break from the sun and relaxing in a hammock. Sebastian, one of the local guys who works there, taught our youngest how to surf! Jose pointed out great sea creatures during snorkeling trips. Beautiful grounds, great staff, excellent rooms.

Dave and Suzanne, the owners of Casa Cayuca, achieve something that is all too rare at most resorts these days – the fine, and often very hard to enact, balance between attentive service and a casual atmosphere. Want a drink as you lounge on the hammock, no problem. Prefer complete peace and quiet as you fall asleep on a lounge chair overlooking the ocean, no problem either. They can schedule a full day of activities from 9:00 in the morning – surfing, cave exploring, snorkeling, visiting native villages, etc or if you would prefer to sit on the beach, tan, read, etc and have a nice lunch on the dock - that can be arranged as well. With only 4 cabins (plus two rooms in the main lodge) there is never a need to reserve a beach chair, nor rush for a good seat at dinner, worry about using the hobbie cat or stand up paddle boards - or essentially worry about anything – which is just the way a vacation should be. Dave and Suzanne along with their wonderful staff, while not obtrusive, seem to be available to help whenever needed. When you don’t need them, they seem to disappear into the palm trees and surrounding jungle.

The many rave reviews here accurately depict the tranquil and idyllic setting – which seemed to change every hour with the light, sun, clouds, etc., the wonderful food (made from scratch and served family style) and the numerous things to do (we especially enjoyed the reef snorkeling, the Zapatillas and the Cave exploration). I am not sure there is too much to add that has not already been said but I will add a few observations:

Along with my wife and three children (twin 8 year old girls and a 12 year old boy), we spent 6 days / 5 nights at the resort in April. From a young family perspective, the resort was a truly special place to bring a family. The resort was small enough that very quickly the children felt completely at ease and so did we as parents. It was a safe environment where the children could be confident making their way to the beach, the dock, the cabin, etc. They say monkeys, sloths, strange bugs and pretty much spent their time in the water, on the paddleboards, reading in the lodge or just exploring. There is WiFi but we found no need to ever login. We felt incredibly safe and never felt a need to lock the cabin door (not even sure if there was a lock) or use the safe that was provided. The beach has a long sand bar (you can essentially walk out over 100 yards) and a nice sandy entry which was perfect for swimming and playing.
Everything in the resort is kept up to date and Dave and Suzanne are truly attentive hosts. We had many family style meals out on the dock, our afternoon snack (freshly made salsa and chips perhaps or a local delicacy) would be brought to either our room or the beach, wherever we happened to be at that time. And the little things – like the upkeep of the cabin and walkways, or even the fact that the beach was swept of debris each morning (leaves, coconuts husks, etc.), showed a quiet attention to detail that really made everything that much more inviting.
We stayed in the Tortuga cabin which worked perfectly for our family of five. Often the children were out by 8:30 and my wife and I would either sit on the patio and listen to the ocean or hang out on the dock. The room is literally a conch throw from the beach and picks up a wonderful breeze all night long.

Dave and Suzanne create a tremendously warm and relaxing atmosphere and we left having made friends with many of the other guests as well as with Dave and Suzanne. We were all sad to leave and hope to come back again as a family.

We went to Casa Cayuco for our Honeymoon and it was definitely something incredible. The place was a paradise, the food was really amazing and the service was sublime. It is definitely a special kind of vacation because it is a 45 minute boatride from Bocas Town, so it is away from all the things that civilization has to offer, nevertheless, the lodge is fully equipped, and the fact that it is very away from civilization helps to disconnect completely while having the capability of staying in touch through WiFi connection.
The place is very beautiful, with amazing surf spots, guided tours and reef snorkelling, with the possibility of going lobster diving, harpoon hunting and octopus fishing, it is paradise for outdoorsmen. The owners (Suzzane and Dave) are very customer oriented, kind and are definitely worried 24/7 that you have the best of times in your stay at Casa Cayuco.
I was there for my honeymoon and I definitely recommend Casa Cayuco, besides, Panamá is a fascinating country.
The most recommended tours in order of amazingness are:
1. Zapatillas diving (reef snorkeling and lobster diving).
2. Snorkelling in the beach next to the hotel.
3. Chocolate farm.
4. Pelicano beach.
There are many bugs, but they only come out at night so if you are really carefull of getting your bed's mosquito net early (4:30-5:00 pm) you won't have any trouble.
I definitely recommend Casa Cayuco, it's an experience you won't regret.

Room Tip: Choose one of the newest cabins, because they have a better quality roof and they have less bugs at...

And we have traveled a lot!
Our time at Casa Cayuco was everything we had hoped for and more. The setting was straight out of a postcard. When our boat approached the island we couldn't believe this would be our new temporary home. We felt as though we had our own private beach...because we pretty much did! The owners could not be more gracious, welcoming or helpful. We love Suzanne and Dave! We hope to return and see them again someday soon.
The lodge is centered between the most gorgeous white sand beach and a backdrop of dense, lush rainforest teeming with monkeys, red frogs, caymans and great hikes to deserted beaches (where you can skinny dip!). The food-words cannot describe-seriously, the food is amazing. Everything is home cooked from scratch by the wonderful local women that work there. We looked forward to our afternoon snack and cocktail at the hotel bar with Suzanne and Dave.
Every employee is local and each one is an exceptional human being who is very focused on making your stay exceptional. Just look at their website to read a bio on each worker!
It is totally safe and you can leave your room unlocked the entire visit. Not worrying about safety or taking your wallet out makes this a truly relaxing getaway in paradise. We are both well traveled and never plan to return to most destinations simply because there are so many places to see on this planet.... but we will be back to Casa Cayuco for sure!!! There are amazing excursions galore but you can simply enjoy your surroundings with the equipment provided - all of top notch quality. Just take a dip off the pier, kayak out a few hundred feet and snorkel and see amazing sea life. We could go on and on... but I think you get the point. GO!!!
