“good value in a mad city.”
Reviewed 22 January 2012

when we arrived in delhi, the first thing that we thought - as everyone says - is how busy and noisy it is. hotel amax is situated just off the busy Arakashan Road - just off the main 'tourist' district of Pahar Ganj.

the staff were very helpful, more than happy to give us a guiding hand for where to go, how to avoid scams, and how to get the most of the city. considering that delhi is so busy with people trying to make a fast buck, this was refreshing.

it should be said that Delhi standards of cleanliness and noise pollution are not the same as those in the western world - this is an obvious point to make, but lots of people complain about this.

hotel amax do their best to keep the hotel clean, and the noise down - but they're fighting an uphill battle to keep people quiet!

all in all, we felt it was good value for money, and certainly one of the best budget hotels in the city.

Standard quality rooms are cheap, really clean (if you compare with other hotels). The rooftop restaurant is really nice and the food is tasty (as usual in India :) ). There is always someone at the reception (usually 2-5 guys) that try to help you with everything.

Good location for the railway and places to eat...though the rooftop restaurant did a nice vegie thali. Paid 500rps for clean, modest room. Towel and bedding were all clean, mattress was comfy. Had two windows with no view but let in light. Noise wasn't too bad (3rd floor)...though I did hear the dogs. Wasn't too cold.
Staff were very nice, especially considering I got the dates wrong and the day before I landed one of them waited at the airport for 3 hrs. Was a bit hard to find, but it was all part of the 'first day in India' fun.
In all, comfortable introduction to Delhi.

Good location, the newly renovated rooms are very nice, bed sheets and towels obviously had been used for weeks, though. Receptionist took a little advantage of us, being fresh meet in India after 20h on airplanes at 6am in the morning and charged us slightly (50 Rps, but still...) more than our predecessor (who we met in the lobby). Apart from that, staff in general friendly and helpful. A bit noisy, but hey, you are in the center of Delhi.

A bit overpriced, given the value, but in general ok. It is hidden in a small side street, so take a good look.

The good:

Staff was very knowledgeable
Food was good
Service was generally good

The not so good:

Room was very cold at night, the open vent in the bathroom & bathroom door having a large gap at the bottom that allowed in cold air at night. Also the gapallowed in allot of dust.

Construction was going on in the building next to my room at night.

Thin windows allowed for any street noise to get in including the sounds of people talking/arguing (including thier staff on the top floor at 2am) and fighting dogs all night long. I may as well have been sleeping out on the street.

The bed was a thin uncomfortable piece of foam.

Overall I was able to get 2 to 3 hours of sleep per night, therefore I will not be back again.

this is lonely planet recomended hotel. i stayed one night. it is very basic but it is simple and not too bad. the best thing was the price as i had not made any reservation. took a pre paid taxi from the hotel. the staff are really good. the breakfast i ordered was good. i would not mind staying here again. it is a little away from the main road but easy to locate. it is on the right hand side of the road. i was in one of the cheaper room so felt a bit cold as it was in the middle of the winter. i did have a look around and they do have nicer rooms.
