The Amax Inn is tucked away, just off Arakashan Road, one of the major arteries of Pahar Ganj. It's location is one of it's strengths; Pahar Ganj is well known for noise and chaos, and the Amax Inn puts you right in the middle of the action without putting you right in the middle of the noise.

I stayed at the Amax off and on throughout February and March. I had stayed in four other similarly-priced hotels in Delhi, and the Amax blew them all out of the water. The rooms are meticulously cleaned, every day, by a friendly but not pushy staff. The hot water always works, the sheets lack those mysterious stains oh-so-common in Pahar Ganj hotels, the televisions always work, and the air conditioners (if you choose an AC room) keep the rooms at a pleasant 18 degrees all day if you so choose. The hotel has a generator, so these facilities work all the time... a boon often limited to higher priced hotels.

The staff offer a range of services standard for hotels in the neighborhood. Laundry, taxi services, tour arrangement, etc.. are all available at the front desk. Unlike other hotels in Delhi, you'll never be pestered into buying a tour package or overpriced taxi ride. The services are there if you need them, without the obnoxious sales pitch. Also, they recently installed a wireless network, freeing guests from the constant search for a decent internet cafe.

The hotel restaurant is great for a bite 24 hours a day. They offer a wide range of Chinese, Continental, and Indian favorites and serve them up in a timely fashion. When you come, be sure to try some of the indian pure veg options... the Dal Makhani is amazing.

To summarize, stay at the Amax Inn. You get all of the perks of a hotel 3x the cost with none of the annoyances. The Amax is my home-away-from-home while I'm in Delhi... be sure to make it yours as well!

The plus points of this hotel are that the room was pretty clean with no signs of creepy crawlies and felt secure- though it practically opened onto the street, there was a good bolt on the door. I got this room which had a decent bed with a good mattress after turning down another which had two small beds with very thin matresses and dodgy electricity. The staff were friendly and helpful on the whole though this did depend a bit on which one you spoke to. There was also reasonably priced internet access.

On the downside, I only got hot water once during the 3 nights I stayed there. The staff had to go to a lot of effort to make this happen. I would not have minded except it was very cold in the room especially at night so if you are staying in winter wrap up warm. It was noisy too but this is what you would expect of budget accommodation in Delhi.

I ate from the menu a couple of times and it was just OK- though welcome to have this option if you don't feel like venturing out for food.

The Amax is rightly a budget hotel and everything you would expect of such. Its relatively clean and 24hr access to hot water which is a bonus as not always guaranteed in Delhi. The location is a little way from the centre but close rickshaw drop to the New train station and the centre. If your looking for a cheap crash pad with reasonable locality, you could do a lot worse than this place!

On arrival we were greeted by some nice staff who spoke limited English, and taken to our room. The room was dark and dingy, but had a ceiling fan that worked and looked clean... although the sheets looked grubby so we slept on my sarong. We did have hot water although you had to wait 10min or so for it to come through... i did ask the staff to put up some birthday balloons and a banner that i brought back from the uk for my boyfriends birthday which they agreed to with a small tip of a couple of pound and did a lovely job.. Also just to warn you that one morning we got up early to catch a train to find the staff had locked us into the hotel.... needless to say after alot of banging we managed to wake them in the reception room opposite to unlock us but if there was a fire i'm sure we would have been gonners!!!
