Owner description: The focus of this open-air memorial to Mahatma Gandhi is a black marble platform marking the place where the peace leader was cremated after his assassination in 1948. It's a peaceful, beautiful site; memorial ceremonies are held on Fridays.

“Peaceful memorial”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2014

Barely mentioned in tourist brochures this is a very important sight to visit and one held dear to many locals. There were hoards of school children when I visited. The memorial park to Gandhi is huge and not very well signposted. A ramp leads down to lockers where you must leave your shoes and then you enter the sunken garden which marks the site of his cremation. There is a black marble slab draped in flowers and an eternal flame burning. Before you leave there is a small gift shop with the very reasonably priced "Gandhi's Life in his own words" for just 5Rs.

“Beautiful tribute”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014

Nice gardens and tribute to Gandhi. No shade and very hot walking if you remove your shoes. Security guards make sure everyone is quiet and respectful. An interesting stop for a short visit.

“Beautiful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2014

We visited Raj Ghat to pay our respects to a great man. Although it was very busy when we attended, the people were quiet and respectful. The memorial is in beautiful gardens and there is an option to view from a high wall around the memorial or to get closer after removing shoes and walking up to the black marble platform.

“The Must Visit place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2014

Here lies a man who has believed in self, inspired a nation and caused the meltdown of an empire, without any violence - based on pure belief of self and choice of approach.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with the approach of Gandhi - it is the last memory of a man who is unique and inspired many a great leaders like Nelson Mandela.

He probably is the man of recent memory who has demonstrated the power of one, self-belief and going ahead to achieve what he believed.

“Beautiful”

A quiet memorial in beautiful gardens. As mentioned in earlier reviews there is no shade so you may need to go early or later in the day.
