This Le Meridien (Starwood) property is a modern 4 star hotel close to almost everything in Delhi. This is my tenth time in Delhi and India. I have stayed in numerous luxury hotels in India and this was my second time at Le Meridien. It may not be the most luxurious hotel, but it is close enough!
It is a stylish, chic, trendy hotel that will not disappoint anyone desiring upscale accommodations. The rooms are large, the decor is clean and modern (think Scandinavian design) and each room has a plethora of lighting combinations. The bathrooms are well appointed with a large glass walled shower. In short, there are no hidden surprises; you can relax and steel yourself for the adventures on the streets of Delhi.
The bar/lounge on the lobby floor is dark, but hip and the prices are what you would expect at home in a similar hotel lounge. The "Monsoon" restaurant, also on the lobby floor, serves exotic Indian-fusion cuisine, which is excellent and very artfully presented. Yes, you will drop a hundred dollars for 2 people without wine. Nevertheless, it is worth it. The Chinese restaurant on the 20th floor is also very good, but I come from Vancouver so I'm spoiled when it comes to Chinese cuisine. If you are into desserts and great coffees the "Caffe e Choco Art" in the lobby is terrific and reasonably priced for the large desserts they serve. For everyday dining (breakfast through dinner) "The One" restaurant is fine and reasonably priced with an excellent, very diverse breakfast buffet.
The fitness centre is very good with a variety of machines and weights. The pool is OK, but not great for swimming laps. There are a number of stores on the first floor above the lobby (only reached by a winding staircase from the lobby). The shops offer almost all the typical goods one finds throughout India (e.g. pashmina scarves, clothing, leather goods and jewellery). I don't know how they stay in business, because the walk by (or should that be walk up) trade is minimal.
Anyway, if you are on business and don't have time to get out to shop on the streets, you can always pick up something here (every woman needs another pashmina scarf). Of course, you have to haggle. Whatever the proprietor asks knock it to 50% immediately and when they counter offer - stick to your target price. You might relent at 40% off the original asking price, but don't hesitate to smile, thank the owner politely, and walk out. Nine times out of ten they will chase you down the corridor! Besides, who cannot afford to spend $10 dollars on a scarf?
So what's not to like about Le Meridien? Well, the WIFI is not free and averages about $15.00 US per night (definitely not cool). They should just roll the cost of WIFI into the price of the room.
So now you need to know 2 more things to do while at Le Meridien. One, go eat at the "Spice Route" restaurant or have a drink in one of several bars in the Imperial Hotel on Janpath (about 2 blocks from Le Meridien). Why? Because the Imperial Hotel is old world British luxury and you need to experience this at least once on your visit.
Two, you need to take the brand new train between Indira Gandhi International Airport and central Delhi. It costs about $1 dollar each way and only takes about 30 minutes to travel the entire line. By car, the same trip can take up to 90 minutes in everyday traffic. But the real reason - it is one of the most modern trains you will ride and it is virtually empty. Believe me, you will have total peace and quiet for about a half hour. It is a modern zen-like experience! Taxi drivers hate the competition and will often tell you they don't know where it is (push them to take you). You'll marvel at the convenience and you can easily catch a taxi or a Tuk Tuk for the 5-10 minute ride to Le Meridien or whatever hotel near the Connaught Circle area.
So relax and enjoy the bustle and energy of Delhi knowing there are a few tranquil spots where you can seek refuge.
