The museum has the best collection of Indian art and other art objects. It is a pity that the displays are not better shown or the building better maintained. The miniature paintings, reminiscent of medieval manuscript illumination, are outstanding.

Visited National Museum @ New Delhi. Liked it a lot. Sharing with you the object I liked the most i.e. inscriptions of 'Dhamma' by Samrat Ashoka on a big stone (partially covered in the photo). This was recovered in Girnar, Gujrat. A precious historic item.

This museum has a splendid collection of artfacts - even though poorly labeled and arranged. You need to carry your passport for identification to get the audio guide. Cameras are OK (still only) for a fee. However, a map is supplied of the various exhibitions and it is very worthwhile wandering around to see the growth of India over the last 5,000 years. It makes one realise that the ancient Egyptians weren't the only ones roaming around then. It is a pity that the ancient Indians did not build structures to rival the pyramids. The collections of coins and paintings are impressive.

I came away from the National Museum utterly depressed. I had visited it years ago and it was in much better condition then. It is a shame that the exhibits are so poorly curated, textiles and artifacts not kept in climate controlled displays, stained and moldering walls and ceilings, lighting that doesn't work, exhibits without labels .. etc., etc. etc. There are some wonderful artifacts here and it is so sad to see them so poorly displayed and horribly preserved.

Don't miss the temporary Yogini exhibit, it is very interesting and well presented.

I'm not really much of a museum guy, but the collections here impressed me. Ancient statues, carvings, scrolls, paintings and even household items can be viewed here. That the are ridiculously old and still in good condition is what astounded me. The ivory collection I found particularly interesting as I thought that it may be a little taboo. Instead it highlights the excesses of the maharajas over the centuries. I'm sure the audio guide would have been incredibly informative as well. Definitely, head down to check it out.
