“Dowdy and large but with some gems”
Reviewed 1 March 2014

Use the audio guide to help sieve through the vast collection. The only refreshments are in the unattractive staff canteen in the basement

“Must Visit for everyone.....”
Reviewed 27 February 2014

Best and must see place to visualize history, creativity and amazing work done by our great great great ancestors. How much patience, creativity, hard work and eye for details was required to get that work. Lots of collection but ofcource our history can not be depicted with few pieces.. it is just tip of iceberg...

This place needs more attention for cleanliness

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

Lovely collection of textiles and a superb collection of paintings and miniatures. Everything is well documented so audio not really necessary. A small shop with some good items but nothing representative of the museum itself.

“Fantastic Exhibits, poor curating and terrible disabled access”
Reviewed 13 January 2014

In Brief....

Good:
Amazing exhibits
Good Audio Guide

Bad:
Poorly lit displays
Poor quality descriptive lables
Terrible Disabled Access
Dirty and disfunctional Disabled access toilet
Untidy, dirty and maintained on the cheap.

When we arrived we were surprised to find no slope at the main entrance. We were directed to a slope around the back. When we got there we found we had to work our way around piles of rubbish and when we got to the door we found it was locked! Someone was eventually found to unlock the door... 15 minutes sitting amongst the rubbish was not very dignified. When the person came they said "Have you got a ticket?" Well of course not we can't get to the ticket hall (we were expecting that would be some arrangement by which we would arrive at the ticket hall from the diabled access slope (which in relaity was a utility entrance for exhibits! They wanted me to leave my wife in the chair and go to the ticket hall.. I refused and told them I will go into the ticket hall with her via the diabled access and they would have to cope somehow. We were exscorted to the ticket hall.

The usual foreigner extortion took place. All government run museums, national parks etc extort 10 to 75 time higher price for foreigners. What about afluent Indians are they only able to pay 10Rs.

Once into the museum the exhibits are amazing but sadly the lighting is poor, dirty glass on the displays and the exhibit info is often woefully short and sometimes missing altogether. The audio guide is ok but very few items have any audio link number associated with them.

The museum is poor condition. It speaks loud of India's lack or concern about its heritage. I have seen for the past 20 years if a monument is not a money maker they are not really interested in investing any care and the monuments cab be badly damaged with graffitti etc. It takes foreign investment by Japanese buddhist to provide millions to repair and protect Buddhist monuments but India can provide broken lighting and cheap lime paint on its National Museum walls.

I have heard that some private corporation is going to bank-roll the refurbishment of the museum. It certainly needs it. The disabled toilet was a disgrace. The support handle next to the toilet was covered in dirt and it folded sideways away from the toilet making it completely useless and in fact dangerous. The whole room was dirty and there was no soap or means by which to dry ones hands. The mirror was too high for a disabled wheelchair user .... the whole place felt it was done in a complacent and pathertic manner.

Worth a visit for the exhibits but be prepared for puzzlment when you see an amazing exhibit minus any information to describe it... frustratiing.

“Not as well laid out and extensive as expected”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

India, being one of the oldest civilization has lots to tell in terms of its history and culture but we did not see a well laid out exhibit. We also expected more extensive exhibits as one would see in ancient civilization such as Egypt. Our jaws dropped in Egypt but not here. Nonetheless it is worth coming and the audio-guide is also worth getting. Oh, the museum shop has some good buys.
