“Wow! Carnatica!”
Reviewed 14 August 2014

If you have been to the many south indian chains in Delhi you would realise how sooner or later they loose their novelty and the menu seems a borrowed synonym for all. Here in the vast conundrum of Dosa's and corrupted Idli's and the so not so hole'ee vada, Carnatic Cafe is a place that will take your sambar away. The menu stands out offering a range of delicacies from the owners home state which make sure you come away enlightened and enlivened.
The dosa's are different and some of them are realistically the most interesting I have ever had. Some of the the menu is unheard of and you would be be well to ask the owner or the staff who are more than keen to help you select what fits your mood of the day. Overall this is one of the best places to rediscover the banal south indian menu in a manner that will leave you happy. truly happy!

“An unexpected delight!”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

Three of us (all chefs) staying at a hotel nearby and went hungrily in search of some decent food since our overnight train trip, and stjmbled across Carnatic Cafe. Wow we absolutely loved this place, none of us had tried dosas before and found them addictively good, we ended up ordering far too much food then staying for a few hours to finish eating it all! And the drip coffee... Unbelievable! We even got photos with the fun and rather chatty owner! Yum

“Cosy restaurant, good food”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Inside is dimly lit, cool with hanging corn husks and an open kitchen. We quickly ordered a malleswaram dosa and a plate of puddu. The dosa is the most famous one and rightly so. I know how difficult it is for masala ingesting north Indians to come across one that does not have mashed potatoes in its belly. This one is a thickish dosa with a red spicy garlicky paste inside. Soft, spicy and very fragrant. If you liked this, you will also love the garlic dosa at Kausstubh which is equally delightful.

Next came the uttapam and we had also ordered a rawa coconut dosa. Both were good. No need to qualify that statement. They were good. The sambar was a mild, have by bucketful kind. I love the spicier, tangy, kick in your upper mouth kind. Good food, good service.

Next came the puddu. They were paniyanams or Unniappam. They were soft and delicious. We had cheese filled ones at Kausstubh and they were a lot less oily too. Worth a try, nevertheless.

“South Indian food but with a difference”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

Nice small cosy cafe with a difference. And that is they make food with their heart. Only place where I have seen idilis being made fresh after you have placed the order. The waiter will inform you in advance that you would have to wait for 15-20 minutes just for your idilis. But its worth the wait. Softest idilis that I have ever had. Very different items on the menu like Akki roti, Ragi roti . Awesome taste

Dont go with expectations of dining in a fancy restaurant. Its a very small but holy cafe. Hygienic and delicios food. Must try their filter coffee as well.
