“Memorable trip to a small heaven”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

The place is no less than a small heaven...dense forests, apples orchards, green mountains, snow clad peaks, river - all together make a perfect scenery. The place is so peaceful that we forgot the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. There are several roads one can take to reach this place. Better is to go from Shimla-Theog-Kharapattar-Mandhol-Shelapani, the road stretch (approx. 50 kms) from Kharapattar is quite bad (road widening work is going on which might take long to complete. Prefer to take an SUV that will make the ride comfortable. Once your each Mandhol, there is a jungle drive of around 1.5 kms which leads you to this beautiful place. The owners; Sudhir and his wife are great hosts. The place has been built beautifully in the middle of an apple orchard. The food served is delicious too. Next day we went trekking thorough the jungle to the mountain top (it was a 360 degree view from there); also went to the river side and had a good time. We stayed there for 3 nights (3 nights is a must to enjoy the place). It was one of the most memorable trips I had with my family.

Room Tip: We stayed in room on first floor and it has great views from its balcony

I had been to Dwarika Residency on October 2011 along with my husband. We had stayed there for 3 nights. We reached there through a long car journey starting from Kalka, as unfortunately our tickets were not confirmed in the toy train. Such a long journey through roads which were really pathetic, made us doubtful about our journey. But the beautiful views all along at times helped us forget the tiresome journey. And when we reached Dwarika, we were just spellbound when we entered the room at the first floor. the entire residency is full of modern amenities. A very relaxing holiday spent there with very good caretakers, cook. I really enjoyed the 'Alu Paranthas' there. The flavour of 'methi' in north Indian cuisine was mouth watering. They were always at our service. Even i had the pleasure of cooking there with all things available. We got a guide who took us around. A memorable trip...If i get a chance again, i'll surely be there. Our thanks to Mr. Sudhir Khimta, a very polite person & owner of this residence.

Room Tip: First floor right hand side while you climb upstairs

Travelled Nov 2012

We stayed for 2 nights at Dwarika Residency and must say its really a small hidden heaven.

Mr. Sudhir Khimta had arranged a taxi for pick up from Shimla railway station and the driver was very polite and friendly. When we stayed at Dwarika, nobody else had booked any room. So it was like me and my husband owned the entire place for 2 entire days. :D The view from the balcony was awesome and the staff made our stay so comfortable, providing everything we required. Food was finger licking good, made fresh and served hot. It was a wonderful feeling for me and my husband as we started our honeymoon stay in Dwarika. Wonderful place to be. Please don't miss this place if you visit Shimla. However please note the journey from Shimla to Shelapani will take roughly 6-7 hours given the bad condition of roads. Drive slow and safe. :) I really thank Mr. Sudhir Khimta for managing such an excellent property and making it a part of our memories.

Room Tip: We were given the first floor room and the view was excellent from there..

This is an absolutely extraordinary experience: has almost five star amenities but with a homely feel. The setting is gorgeous, the house itself is thoughtfully designed. And the hospitality is unbeatable. The proprietor, Mr. Khimta, attends to every need himself--and his gourmet cooking is better than anything you will encounter at the top end hotels in Himachal. There are good walks around, but none of them are "easy". But they are all stunning. This can also be used as a base to drive down the the Pabbar river--another undiscovered gem, and the glacier from whic it emanates. Ideally a group of 8-10 people is perfect so you can have the whole house to your self. Now if only Himachal governemt would repair the road from Shimla -- it is a bumpy 4-5 hrs. But well worth the effort.

My husband found this place online after some research and we were both hoping it doesn't turn out to be a disaster. The night we reached was stormy and raining heavily and some hailstorm. We were really tired and hungry and worried. Mr Sudhir Khimta had helped us book a taxi to pick us up from Shimla. He was very helpful n drove very well considering the last kilometer or so is rather tricky especially in that weather. Their staff welcomed us and took our luggage from us. The first sight of Dwarika Residency gave us hope and brought a smile to our faces.

When we entered, it was even better ... beautifully done up bungalow, fire place, very very well stocked kitchen, extremely helpful staff, spacious rooms and rather huge bathrooms. We just loved the place. We stayed there for nearly five days and havent had a more relaxing n calm holiday perhaps ever. The view we saw in the morning was stunning ... pine n deodar trees all around, the fragrance of flowers n greenery, butterflies all around, and silence .......

Food was just not a problem. Considering its in middle of a small hamlet, the kitchen had everything u might want ... all sauces, condiments, spices, snacks, veggies, non veg, and a fairly decent collection of drinks.

We played scrabble all day, slept well, were well fed, went on horses a little uphill and just relaxed.

A must must visit place ... cheers to Mr Sudhir Khimta and his staff.

We love to travel in off-beaten trails where we do not expect any luxury / great service or similar things. Shelapani is not a popular tourist destination in the maps of Himachal so we decided to stay there in Oct 2012 for its wonderful location. And I've seen some recommendations in indiamike (India Travel Forum). Kudos to his recommendation....... It was an awesome experience at Shelapani. Location, service, amenities, food, interior, employees everything (including the value for money) is just PERFECT !!!!
It was beyond our expectation ............... it was like a beautiful HOME during our Himachal trip. Wish we could get accommodation for another night - but it was already booked for the next day. If anyone is planning a trip around Hatkoti, Chanshal Pass Dodra-Kwar then Shelapani is highly recommended.

This October was a fourth trip to Selapani in four years. This time it was a short stay of two nights only, otherwise earlier we always stayed here a week or so. Once you reach Village Mandhol, there is a mud road of about 2 kms going through beautiful pine and Deodar forest. The cottage is big and contains five rooms. On occasion there had been other guests also at the cottage but because of the size of the unit, you always have your privacy. The food is delicious and the cook is well trained. I must mention the big lawn in front of the cottage, the kids love to play and run there and a great place to sit in the morning and evenings to soak in the breath taking views of the snow clad mountains. I am an avid bird watcher, and am always provided a local person to accompany me for my bird watching trips around the orchards and the village. This time the last sixty kilometers of the road were in bad condition so it will be a better idea to inquire about the road condition before you take the journey (Also the owners have tie up with taxi agencies in Shimla where you can park your vehicle and take an SUV from them). Overall a wonderful experience and looking forward to our visit again next year.
