“quite interesting”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

The significance of this church is its age and history in the Mysore community. But I found it rather ordinary in decoration and style. The punka wallah fans were interesting and some of the memorials.

“Excellent and Marvelous Peace of Art”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

This beautiful Cathedral was built in 1956 and is one of the largest churches in the country. It has been built in the Gothic style with beautiful stain glass windows and lofty towers. The illuminated church in the evening is a wonderful site not to be missed. Brilliant peace of architecture which requires quick attention of fixing and repair. Hope church gets the required funds so that the restoration work gets completed on time.

“Most intriguing story of St Philomena's anchor”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

This church is situated in the centre of Mysore. I was intrigued to find an anchor next to the statue of St Philomena's in the church. And I tried to ask around as to what the connection was. Did not have much joy in the beginning. Finally, I was given a type-written account of how Philomena a Greek princess was martyred at age 13 when she refused to give herself up to the Roman emperor Diocletian who wanted to marry her, circa 3rd/4th century. But Philomena had previously dedicated herself to be a bride of Christ and was not prepared to give up her virginity to become a Roman empress! Diocletian then had her bound, weighed down with an anchor and thrown into the river. But she was rescued by angels. Failing in all his attempts to torture her, including shooting arrows at her (the arrows boomeranged and killed the six archers!), he had her decapitated.

Within the grounds of the church is a Catholic coeducational school and a printing press. There are also fragrant tree jasmines and frangipani (plumeria) in the compound.

The church is worth a visit. Do go to the catacombs too. An impressive Gothic structure. There was someone high up trying to clean the arches without any safety harness! A very brave man!

“Magnificient church..”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

It has a heavy rush during the evening times. Try to visit the church early in the morning. The catacomb is the main attraction there. The church is a must visit place if you are in Mysore.

“Gothic but you can probabaly skip this if you've seen the churches of Europe”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

A good example of Gothic style architecture - reminds me of churches in England (Cambridge). The church needs renovation and I think they are in the process of raising funds to do this. It is not very big inside but interesting to find something like this in India.
