Owner description: Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as ‘Mysuru Zoo’, is one of the oldest zoos of the country established in 1892, by His Highness, the erstwhile Ruler of Mysuru Sri Chamarajendra Wadiyar Bahadur. Mysuru Zoo holds an important place in Karnataka. In 1909 the Palace Zoo was named as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens to commemorate the illustrious founder and since then it bears the nomenclature. Mysuru Zoo has gradually grown into tourist centre, imparting wildlife values. It has got 123 years of history exhibiting wild animals in the near natural enclosures. Despite majority of the zoos have been shifted from the original place to the new places, Mysuru Zoo could modernize the zoo, without shifting the zoo. The zoo is well compacted unit, with modern animal enclosures including heritage buildings attracting tourists all over the world.

Right in the middle of the palacial city of Mysore lies the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, one of most well maintained zoos in India. It boasts of a variety of untamed wild specimens who are a pleasure to admire , even though they might be kept in somewhat closed enclosures, still they seem to be well fed and healthy. For some like me who has not , and who may not even in future venture out in the wild to see these magnifient untamed creatures in there habitat, its damm good arrangement. And to add to the animal list there is an endless collection of exotic , birds, some of which looked very lonely and frustrated...
All in all its a lovely place to spend when in Mysore...

I've visited many zoos ( in India and US ). I found Mysore Zoo quite well maintained with so much wild life to see. The environment for the animals is designed to provide a feel of their natural habitat. Every wild life enclosure provide the details of the animal like their typical lifespan, the regions they can be found on earth.. etc. Every effort is taken to keep the Zoo clean and environment friendly. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Mysore. My 3 year old daughter loved it :-)

This is the best zoo I have ever seen.

The entire place is very clean and look very spacious. The animal cages/ areas are also neat and tidy and are ample big so that the animals can enjoy some free space. Also the animals were looking clean and healthy. It seems they are fed well and timely.

The best thing is that the zoo has a standard route, which if followed, you cannot miss a single animal in the zoo. Sign boards and maps are placed all around the zoo. There is lot of greenery so you dont feel the sun.

There are more animals in this zoo, than I have seen in any other zoo. There were more than 30 species of birds, 10 species of crocodiles, 20 species of snakes, 4-5 tigers, cheetah, leopard, jaguar, Gorilla (they say that this is the only Gorilla in India), African and Indian elephants and about 10 giraffes.

The zoo also have electric vehicle and bus for tour.

Please dont miss this zoo. I am sure you will enjoy it thoroughly.

march memories... mysore memories.... Magnificent Mysore....the upkeep was excellent. would have been nice if there were interactive sessions with the public, tie-ups with schools for excursions etc from all over India.. promoting Green, the echo- friendly way.... on the way...

Our Tryst with the birds and beasts- an unforgettable experience, memories linger.. evenafter 8 months. It was a very pleasant interlude for my son and me,; we formed new friendships, enjoyed the visit, time was a premium though, since it was a package visit; hope to visit again.. there should be access features for persons with disabilities, braille signages, sign language interpreters,, it will help if staff are deputed to other zoos where all these features are in place- towards inclusive tourism... it should be enjoyed by everyone... breaking barriers of all kinds...thank you...
