“Hotel with a view of Brindavan Gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 February 2014

I was pleasantly surprised when my customer told me the workshop will be at Royal Orchid, Brindavan Gardens, Krishnaraja Sagar.

The hall we were given I was told was the erstwhile Ball Room-a no pillar hall, bright and large enough. However, the air conditioning was a challenge-sometimes pretty cold and sometimes warm. I wish they had temperature control within the hall.

Service was just fine and all was good with the stewards being attentive. I also felt with such breath taking views of Brindavan Gardens from their Elephant Bar, everyone was so mesmerized that no service was needed. The lunch on day 1 was at CK Restaurant and indeed pretty high quality of food and spread of menu. Masala Dosas were really yummy at the live counter. I relished the way the spread and manner in which the dessert counter was done. WoW! Alas, I choose not to add calories and didn’t grab a bite.

Day 2 being a Saturday, Royal Orchid decided to give preference to the weekend guests and pushed our buffet [a highly truncated version] to the passage section near the Elephant Bar. Obviously, my colleagues and I were disappointed since we were expecting something similar to the Day 1 menu. Since we were keen to conclude the workshop and return to our destinations we went through the ceremony of completing lunch. My take here is had Royal Orchid thought through this aspect they would have either planned for our lunch on both days at any one of the places-either the passages of Elephant Bar or CK restaurant. By trying to do a mix and match, I guess they made a mess, albeit small.

The cookies and other snacks served during tea / coffee breaks were good, but again refills took time and on one instance never happened.

I did not get to use their guest rooms, but will do someday.

Overall, a good experience and with some small caring actions and planning, Royal Orchid can make it an enchanting and memorable experience for their guests. Else, it might find favor with guests who want to be close to the famed Brindavan Gardens. And that could mean lesser repeat visits by the guests.

We stayed one night at this hotel. First off, it is located well outside of Mysore city (45 minute drive) so not a good location if you are planning on sight seeing in town.

The hotel is quite beautiful but has not been well maintained. It ends up being a strange mix of beautiful elements (art and architecture) with budget elements (like paper placemats in the cheaply decorated restaurant or the cheap plastic bin in the poorly constructed bathrooms). Not what you'd expect given the price point of the hotel.

Staff vary considerably in their helpfulness and ability to speak English.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to visit Mysore city simply because of the distance but if you are looking for a break from the city, it is okay.

Travelled feb 6-7 2014. The view from the building is great. Worth visiting only on weekdays else there is a huge crowd to see krs and it spoils the peaceful atmosphere. Rooms at a first glance look grand but lack in cleanliness and maintenance. View from the room and the bar is lovely. Towels were not really clean, toiletries had not been checked before we checked in, i found some of them empty! We could not get the tv working and no one picked up at the reception. When they finally did, they said they would send someone over to check and no one came till we left the next day!
Restaurant is good, though menu is a little limited.
Good for some quiet relaxation near the river and dam with nice views. Not a "luxury" destination.

Stayed there in may 2013 for a night. Rooms and hotel are good. location is awesome.
Restaurant is lacking, need to speed up the service time, and prices were a little high. Other restaurants are in the city which is about 20 kms away. The worst part was the swimming pool, size is small fine, but need to keep it clean folks. The best part is the view and the peace in the mornings.

Room Tip: choose a room on the higher floors, preferably on the right side.

This lovely historic hotel with 3 story open air columned lobby built by the Brits and with its large old style rooms should be 4 star. However if you want wifi, a good pool and gym, and good food (more below) don't stay here.
Good points
1. Beautiful view of gardens from terrace and from all rooms.
2. Large gracious rooms in old British style.
3. Step out of hotel and you're in this almost-mini-Versailles, with fountains lit at night.

Poor management (possibly improving, see below) makes for bad points:
1. Pool filthy
2. Gym 3 machines, only treadmill and cross trainer work
3. Food: lesser quality buffet. Terrible fruit at breakfast and awful croissants, etc.
Only after insisting on a la carte ( are they lazy?) for lunch and then dinner did they say ok but not without a fight. Surprisingly grilled prawns and tandoori chicken were excellent. But despite their advertising you have to fight to get food cooked to order.

Note: it's sometimes worth complaining. They cleaned leaves off pool and started changing the water and fixing the filter. It's a cheap rubber lined pool with 5" scum, like a dirty bathtub. Maybe they will eventually clean it or better yet replace it.

Note to owner/manager: do you ever stay at your hotels? If you did and used the facilities like a guest you might change things. Example: shower curtain is old, and needs replacement. Curtain should surround tub so water doesn't get all over the floor at the end of the tub when one showers. Try your own buffet and taste its poor quality. Paper napkins, tiny ones, may be ok for breakfast and lunch but not for dinner in a hotel claiming to be 4 star. See other comments above. FYI placemats at the Bangalore Royal Orchid are filthy. How much can it possibly cost to replace them? Also, room ( for 3 nights) in Mysore Royal Orchid was not ready when we checked in at 2pm. Does management think the owner doesn't care or won't spend a rupee to fix things?

Bottom line: lovely hotel in historic building and great place if you don't care about wifi, pool or gym and are strong enough to insist on a la carte, as they advertise it.

Room Tip: All rooms face gardens. We had room 105 ground floor, convenient.

Our stay at Royal Orchid - Brindavan Gardens was a memorable one. The hotel is maintained really well and it certainly lives up to its standard of being a heritage and vintage property. The courteous and helpful staff made our stay quite pleasant. The quality of food and service at CK's was wonderful, though the dinner buffet can be improvised on the taste. I would recommend CK's "Laal Maans" and "Chicken Tikka Masala" from their platter of Indian and Mughlai food. Also, we have had better Mysore Pot Coffee than what was served at the garden cafe.
The view from the hotel is spellbinding with an extended view of Brindavans and the Krishnaraja Dam and the hotel is soothingly lit at night. A romantic place to spend as a couple and a relaxing getaway with your family.
A few suggestions -
1. We did not find any boards to guide us to the hotel after we were in the perimeter. GPS was not quite helpful in this area. We had to stop and ask several times. Since the hotel is a little away from the main streets, few boards with direction to the hotel would be helpful for the first timers like us.
2. The Spa and massage needs drastic improvement given the standard of the hotel. We were totally disappointed by the full body massage that we had availed. Also , would suggest the management to work on the privacy in and around the SPA outlets. You can hear people walking around, talking and also interacting with the masseuse between the massage session. As a customer, I would definitely not come back and avail the SPA service here.
3. For a person who gets freaked with the sight of a lizard, it is definitely not quite pleasant to hear a bell that sounds like the constant call of lizards!! Although we had switched off the bell in our room at night, we could still hear the freaky sound from the adjacent room. I had to sacrifice some sleep for this !!..Recommend replacing the bells with something more soothing...

Over and above, I found the place value for money and will cherish the royal hospitality . Felt princely !! :)...

Room Tip: The Queen Bed rooms are not cramped at all. Good enough for 2+1 adults. Choose higher floors towards...
