On searching for a hotel in Mumbai for 3 nights at a couple of weeks notice, we struggled to find any decent budget accommodation in a central location (eg around Churchgate or CST). We decided to stay a little further out on one of the suburban lines and chose Al-Saudia for its proximity to Mahim Junction (10mins walk). From there Churchgate station is easily reached for even less than mere pennies for accessing the main tourist sites.

The hotel was a little difficult to find using their own address of "opposite Paradise cinema", but some friendly locals pointed us in the right direction.

Our allocated double room hadn't been vacated after the prior night so we left our bags and wandered the area for the morning. It was very pleasant and thriving with local people going about their daily business. When we did check in we found our room to be small and a bit on the grotty side with everything looking badly aged, although certainly no worse than some other budget hotels we stayed in India. There is a lift but we felt safer using the stairs each day instead. The en suite was small and basic but acceptable for a few nights. There was cable TV with sports, movies and international news channels.

Then we had our first night. We were woken by the sound of rustling in our bin and other noises. We turned the light on and the noises stopped, then once we turned the light off again we could hear something running around and saw a mouse silhouetted against the light coming under the room door. We phoned down to reception twice but nobody came up to even check our room. Next morning we asked to speak to the manager but were told he wouldn't start working until 11am. When we spoke to him he said it was just a normal thing and that its happened before! We had already forked cash out for our whole stay by booking online so were reluctant to take our bags and leave, but in any event we weren't offered a refund or discount. The manager did agree to move our room to one a couple of floors further up, which we didn't think would make any difference, however since it was a bit larger and had all the same (non mousey) features to accommodate us we agreed. We made sure to block up the gaps around the door that night after checking we didn't have any early visitors!

Because of our incident, we would have to be pretty desperate to choose to stay here again.

This hotel was really nice and fulfilled our expectations. Staff was very friendly and helpful, room was okay and as clean as possible – it was exactly what you can expect at this cheap rate in Mumbai. It is a bit far off from the main sightseeings, but finding a cab is no problem.

The room had permanent stains on the pillows and the sheets, insects all over the bathroom, and the overall condition was horrendous. We spent over two weeks in different parts in India, and this was by far the most expensive, not to mention that we couldn't even stay for a single night because of how bad of a state it's in.

I even asked them to change the (only) bed sheet because it had disgusting stains all over and the replacement was just as bad. Even the toilet paper they provided had dirt stains all over it, and the bathroom was extremely filthy.

We left on the first night and the guy at the reception ripped us off so we ended up paying even more for a single night (we chose to leave after a couple of hours - couldn't even stay the night).

The only advantage is that the area of Mahim is very lively and away from all of the tourists, so you get to live a true Mumbai experience. I'm generally extremely lax with hostels/hotels, but this one was by far the worst I've ever seen.

I chose this hotel based on the reviews (and because it was about all I could get with a same day reservation), but I have to say that the four and five star reviews are, in my opinion, not merited. Perhaps they are all by friends? Or maybe it's just that most of the other budget places in Mumbai are considerably worse? In Delhi, you can get a room that is much, much nicer for half the price; but I can’t make a proper comparison because I don’t know Mumbai very well.

The people were friendly and helpful. They were also respectful, which is extremely important to me as a solo female traveler. That's definitely the best thing about the place.

The rooms are old and shabby. They are of reasonable size, though, but not particularly clean. Windows, walls, doors and furniture don’t get washed very often. The floor gets swept regularly, but not always mopped.

The bathroom, including the shower, was fully functional, though a leak caused it to be constantly wet and a little dank.

The bed was not too bad for a budget place. The mattress seemed to be foam. It was neither really squishy nor hard as a rock—and it was only slightly lumpy.

Linens were generally clean, though the towel was stained and a little smelly.

No bedbugs. Also didn’t see any cockroaches.

There was a sign in the room saying there will be a Rs500 per day charge for washing clothes in the room. Really!

The location is a bit iffy. Didn't feel all that safe outside the hotel.

The hotel is a little off the main road, so there isn’t as much noise from the street as there might have been. However, it's rather too close to a mosque, considering the excessive volume of the loudspeakers. At least the muezzin has a reasonably good voice.

On the other hand, the elevator is exceptionally noisy, and you hear it everywhere.

Sign in the room says, "Smoking prohibited in this area", yet there is an ashtray provided.

A/C was functional, but temperature couldn't be controlled. It's either off or on.

I wouldn't stay here again unless I was desperate.

Room Tip: There are three rooms on each floor except the ground floor. The elevator is really noisy, with heav...

I stayed in a non-AC room for one night in December 2012. As a solo female traveller, I felt safe in the hotel. The staff (and by this, I mostly mean the guys at the front desk) were always nice, helpful and respectful.

The room was spacious though clearly very old and run-down. However, it served my purposes (ie to have a bed for one night) well. Hot water worked fine.

I was a bit worried because there was a window in the room but there were no glass panes - just metal railings. This was covered by the curtains. I thought this meant it was possible for someone outside to stick his/her arm in and move the curtains away, but I didn't check in detail. So there might be an issue of privacy, apart from the noise from outside if you like to sleep very early.

There's not much soundproofing between the rooms, so I'm glad the kids next door shut up after a while.

As for location, it's about 25 minutes by train away from CST station (otherwise known as Victoria Terminus). The advantage is that it's less than half an hour away from the airport.
