“Touch of British history”
Reviewed 26 November 2012

The area Churchgate gets its name from the western gate of the Fort (of Bombay) which was in front of St Thomas Cathedral. Even today, when one stands at the entrance of the cathedral, one can see the Churchgate railway station straight through. This church is now one of the key institutions of the Indian Christian community.

“A big church”
Reviewed 7 November 2012

Some of the best tourist sites are in the VT-Churchgate corridor. This church is also one of them. A huge structure tells you about the past existence of Britishers in India. I have never been inside the church, though I had been to Mumbai several times, therefore can’t tell how it looks from inside. It appears huge from outside.

“Window to history”
Reviewed 31 July 2012

The way I see it, this church is a bit of colonial history in Mumbai. The plaques, tablets and memorials to various British people talk about war, of service to their country far from home, of family lives a long way away from home. It is like stepping back in time and into another world as it reminds one very vividly that there were British here, living, ruling and running the affairs of a city. Step outside, to witness the crowded, busy, commercial very Indian street just outside and it feels like stepping from one world into another.

As churches go, it is pretty enough, but seems rather average when compared to all the grand cathedrals of Europe. Even in Mumbai, I personally feel that the Afghan Church is prettier, has greater atmosphere and is the better choice if one had time for just one church visit in Mumbai.
