“A Beautiful Musem with Lovely Permanent & Travelling Exhibhits”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

This museum has been restored in the recent past and now has some lovely exhibhits. I went there recently for the travelling Florence exhibhit and they also have workshops for kids as well as the adults during the summer. Best to check their website to find out what exhibhits are taking place there.

“Beautifully renovated building, cool objects”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

Mumbai's oldest museum is an absolute treat of colonial architecture. Many of the objects inside are from the original collection, making this something of a museum about itself. Century-old relief maps of Mumbai, dioramas of old Mumbai/Maha lifestyle, and some lovely works of mostly Indian craftsmanship can be found inside. I wouldn't go too far out of your way to see it, but if you're in the area it's definitely worth a stop.

“Small but beautiful and fascinating.”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

This museum is beautifully kept and well worth the small entrance fee. The building itself is stunning and there are so many interesting things within it. It is however, quite hot and stuffy inside as there is no air conditioning and it is quite a small museum. But I found it very interesting and well worth a visit. it is right next to the zoo, which we did not go to, but could be combined with a visit to that.

“The V&A redone”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

This used to be the Victoria & Albert Museum and still has imposing statues of the Queen, her consort Prince Albert and of David Sassoon, who was an impressive figure in old British Bombay. Now called Bhau Dadji Lad after one of its prominent patrons, it retains the feel. In fact the experience has been enhanced by its recent renovation, pleasant choice of mint green walls, and interactive stuff they have for young visitors out in the grounds. We were also fortunate as the Florentine exhibition is on nowadays. Photography is allowed but do be careful not to disturb other visitors.

The Museum shop is very limited and exorbitant, though!

“The Museum is its best exhibit”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Just back from the "Florentine Renaissance" temporary exhibit at the Bhau Daji Lad Museum. Mighty impressive, but then, this is a temporary exhibit.

The permanent displays (history of Bombay) would at best be a niche interest category. Having said that, just as some journeys are as important as the destination, this museum is in itself a wonderful exhibit. The old beautiful, obviously lovingly restored museum is most certainly worth a dekko in itself. Do not miss the chandelier on the staircase and also the statues in the outdoor section towards the rear of the museum.

Since this is a part of the city zoo complex, the crowd tends to be a mixed bag - certainly not your average culture vultures! The museum shop is limited in its collection and a more than a tad overpriced (cushion covers at Rs 1000 each!!!).

All in all, I would recommend that you pop in if you are in the vicinity - or better still, wait till you find a temporary exhibition of your interest.
