“best budget hotel, clean and safe”
Reviewed 27 January 2012

we paid 700 inr a double room, shared bathroom.
the room was clean, and has good mattress, they don't provide an extra sheet(like most of the hotels in India), but it was hot and we didn't need it, keep your own sleeping bag in any case. the room has a working fan but there are no sockets in the room, you can ask the reception if you need to charge batteries.
there are 3 shared bathroom, the shower was always hot. they could clean better the bathroom but nothing to complain.
free breakfast with a cup of tea and jam toast.
when we arrived the cab driver didn't know where to go, the helpful manager did pick up the phone to give directions. It' very nearby to Mahatma Gandhi Road, in front of David Sasson Library, 15 min walk to Gateway of India, the surroundings are safe, even in the evening.
the owner was very kind and arranged a taxi to the aiport for 400inr.
this hotel is ok if you need a very basic accomodation, and it's much more better than similar places in Mumbai.
It's better to make a reservation, the hotel has only 7 rooms, and it's always full. you have to phone, they don't use emails.

Hotel Lawrence was by far the most expensive place we stayed in India (700 R for a double with shared bathroom) but Mumbai is probably the most expensive place in India so I think it was pretty good value for Mumbai. The room was very clean and quite large and the shared bathrooms were adequate. I don't remember it being noisy at night. The stairwell of the building is poorly maintained but the hotel itself is well looked after. The location is central and I would have said actually relatively quiet.

The breakfast is simple but fine. I only wish is could have been served earlier than 8am as we would have prefered to get up earlier to avoid the heat of the hot season.

Overall I would happily stay again.

Hotel Lawrence is ideally located for tourists at a fraction of the price of other hotels.

Don't worry too much about the stories of sketchy alleys and stairwells. It is true you have to walk 30 meters down a side street to find the stairwell (on the right, small hotel sign at eye level), but it did not seem unsafe. Same with the stairwell: guy sleeping on 1st floor landing, sacks of something blocking much of the stairwell, unpainted wood, but well-lit at night and not apparently unsafe. The hotel staff are professional and helpful. Rooms are basic budget, though cleaner and brighter than average. Bring your own bedsheet and toilet paper. Common bathrooms are scrubbed daily but still budget common bathrooms... except for the lovely surprise of hot water (!) once you figure out how to operate it. The one on the end had the best hot water. Breakfast was decent.

Only downside was the (upscale) dance club across the side street. Bring heavy-duty earplugs, or don't come back to the hotel between 10PM and 1AM. If there were no dance club next door I would have given this hotel a five star.

Even considering the dance club and unattractive exterior, this is a stunning budget value for Mumbai.

Room Tip: Try to get one on the left side of the hallway. Maybe they are shielded a little bit from the dance...

Great hotel in a very good area, nice and close to Colaba, it took us 10 minutes to walk to the Gateway of India. Rate included a desent breakfast of chai, breadroll, butter and banana, which was great. Shared bathroom is alright and quite clean, the room and linen were perfectly clean. Noisy at night, but not too bad at all. Manager is not the friendliest of people, but fine. Recommended.

Room Tip: The last room on the right has 2 windows facing the street, nice view and nice and cool too.

Good value for money. Conveniently located, just stone's throw away from The Gateway of India. Basic but clean rooms. Shared bathrooms that leave a lot to imagination but friendly and helpful staff that goes this extra mile. The staircase leading to the hotel could easily put you off but don't let this happen. The hotel is worth climbing these three sets of stairs.

This place is in a fantastic location, right around the corner from India Gate and down the street from Colaba. Rooms are very basic, but clean, and there were no bedbugs in my room. The staff was super friendly; they let me check in early in the morning and ordered a taxi for me at midnight! They also bring breakfast to your room. I really enjoyed my stay here.

price 600 single room... 700 for a double room. common bathrooms (3 are available) look like 20 years old, but are quiet clean anyway... rooms very simple. Dont expect any luxuries! even towels not included... but it works anyway, no bedbugs, no mould... quiet but close to pulsing spots. i liked it here, especially for this price (little breakfast included)
