We stayed at Hotel Lawrence for one night and it was perfect. The location is amazing, right next to all the major sites and shopping areas. The rooms was large with a nice window and shared bathrooms were clean. The owner let us leave our luggage in his office until our evening train. Highly recommended if you want a cheap place in downtown Mumbai.

Hotel Lawrence is a good place to stay in the Colaba area. In Mumbai, hotels are usually very expensive, so it is nice to find a place with reasonable rates. It is not a flash place by any means - it's basic by anyone's definition of the word. However, it is very clean, and nicely painted inside, with very clean beds, hallways etc. Don't expect too much in the way of extras (eg. no powerpoint in your room), but do expect a good nights sleep in a clean environment in a central location - all at a good price. Lawrence also has a basic free breakfast included (bread, bananas & coffee / tea), which was a surprising plus for us.

We moved from another guesthouse to Lawrence after a couple of days in Mumbai. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable with attractive furnishings including a table and chairs to enjoy the small provided breakfast. Two rooms we used both had 2 good sized windows. There is a small lounge outside reception with up to date magazines (such as Time Out Mumbai), newspapers and travel booklets. The share bathrooms are fine and we never had to wait to access one. The manager will let you charge electronics in the office since there are no points in the room. We found it a very comfortable stay and would stay again if returning to Mumbai. Do not be put off by the shabby entrance; once you get up a few floors things improve greatly! It is maybe five floors up so anyone who finds stairs difficult may prefer elsewhere. It is a fab location- off Ghandi road: look for the big Art Museum on one side- opposite it is a club advertising 'Cervesas from around the World' take the next ally way to the left after the club to find Hotel Lawrence.

Room Tip: Limited rooms, book early. All are similar with good sized windows.

we paid 700 inr a double room, shared bathroom.
the room was clean, and has good mattress, they don't provide an extra sheet(like most of the hotels in India), but it was hot and we didn't need it, keep your own sleeping bag in any case. the room has a working fan but there are no sockets in the room, you can ask the reception if you need to charge batteries.
there are 3 shared bathroom, the shower was always hot. they could clean better the bathroom but nothing to complain.
free breakfast with a cup of tea and jam toast.
when we arrived the cab driver didn't know where to go, the helpful manager did pick up the phone to give directions. It' very nearby to Mahatma Gandhi Road, in front of David Sasson Library, 15 min walk to Gateway of India, the surroundings are safe, even in the evening.
the owner was very kind and arranged a taxi to the aiport for 400inr.
this hotel is ok if you need a very basic accomodation, and it's much more better than similar places in Mumbai.
It's better to make a reservation, the hotel has only 7 rooms, and it's always full. you have to phone, they don't use emails.

Hotel Lawrence was by far the most expensive place we stayed in India (700 R for a double with shared bathroom) but Mumbai is probably the most expensive place in India so I think it was pretty good value for Mumbai. The room was very clean and quite large and the shared bathrooms were adequate. I don't remember it being noisy at night. The stairwell of the building is poorly maintained but the hotel itself is well looked after. The location is central and I would have said actually relatively quiet.

The breakfast is simple but fine. I only wish is could have been served earlier than 8am as we would have prefered to get up earlier to avoid the heat of the hot season.

Overall I would happily stay again.
