We stayed here two nights in February while on an Exodus small group tour. It is a funky, interesting hotel, with a beautiful entranceway and peacocks wandering about. All food was good. Entranceway patio was a great place for a drink.

Would not hesitate to return.

We went to Narain Niwas just after the New Year. There were 10 of us, five adults and five children including two infants and we stayed 3 nights. The rooms were very nice (they were described as pool facing but were actually the closest to the pool which wasn't heated) and had the old world charm with that aristocratic flair which one normally looks for at all heritage hotels in Rajasthan. The best part was the open lawn right in front of our doors where peacocks milled about. A small aviary was also close by which the kids loved. The staff was very accommodative and friendly. The in house entertainment was quite good as well. The only problems that we had was of warm water on the first day because (we were told) water heating at the hotel is solar. The other problem which only my sister & brother-in-law had on the first night was a mouse in their room! The hotel offered them a room upgrade to compence but we declined. Such things are not completely unexpected at old properties like Narain Niwas so its par for course. I'll give the place a decent 7.5/10.

Room Tip: The more you pay, the better you get in terms of size but not necessarily location!

We loved the hotel at first sight. Away from the busy road, there was no traffic noise at all. The garden was lovely and we had a simple but good lunch there. In the evening we had dinner in the restaurant, in total 3 times and always excellent. Very kind staff in the restaurant who gave good advice and even recognised us when we returned to the hotel after 2 weeks.
Returning from the city in the late afternoon it is great pleasure to have a drink on the veranda. That was also the place to use wifi, at least if it was available.
Rooms were very pleasant as well.

Only remark: the staff at the reception desk was not that friendly. You did not feel welcome and you even had the idea you were trouble, when asking about wifi or so.

Staying at this hotel is a real treat. The grounds are gorgeous, perfect for strolling and sitting. The pool is lovely, and divine in the summer. Delicious food and cocktails are available. The rooms are very comfortable and have terrific furniture and fixtures. This is a place where one can really relax and indulge. Once you enter the gates, you are completely enveloped in the atmosphere of the haveli. It is peaceful retreat from a bustling city, except for the call of the peacocks!

This place has potential, but suffers from uninterested management, which means the overall experience falls short.

First of all I booked directly with the property, and was offered a rate of INR 6400+tax. Later I found out that the same room can be booked through a third party website like agoda.com for INR 5500. I asked them to honor my reservation at the lower price, but they refused. Granted, I could have cancelled my original reservation and booked afresh but didn't want to waste any more time on it.

Then, when checking out, and paying with a foreign credit card, I specifically said I wanted to be charged in INR. Instead the manager at reception put the payment through in Euros, at an exchange rate significantly below the market rate. I asked them to reverse the charge, but they were not willing/able to do so. This may be simple incompetence on the manager's behalf. But it meant I was charged 5% more than I should have been.

The grounds are extensive and quite peaceful but marred by bits of construction and associated rubble left and right. There was work going on around the pool and bits of chipped cement and concrete were lying right where people were walking barefoot.

Our room had not been properly cleaned. The floor was covered in dust. Granted, Rajasthan is a dusty place but it meant the floor had not been swept before our arrival. There were also some hairs in the bathroom and a q-tip in our bed tucked in between the (hopefully clean) sheets. (I didn't dare to check whether it had been used or not...)

Breakfast was mediocre and served in a gloomy dining room. It's a mystery to me why, with these nice grounds they don't serve breakfast outside which would make you forget the mediocre food and enjoy the nice spring weather and bird song at what is the best time of the day.

All in all too many management flaws to make it worth returning. Which is a shame because the building, 90 years old and in traditional style, is charming enough, the pool is decent and the roving peacocks offer a touch of the exotic.

The Hot Pink shop at the entrance to the grounds is worth a trip to this place alone. Great Indian designer wear for men and women.
