Highly recommend this guest house for its location, service and price and the free breakfast is an added bonus. The rooms are slightly old but has a homely atmosphere. Air conditioned room is a must. Very friendly staff .

Good hotel in Chennai.
The rooms are basic, but very clean and get cleaned every day! We had a room with a fan but they also have ac rooms. The staff is helpful and the indoor restaurant is great. A good variety of (veg) Indian or western food!
Breakfast is included and is good!

YWCA Chennai is not exactly a budget place (for India).I would say it is rather at the edge of the budget to midrange category. That said it totally worths every rupee. It has a rather central location, about ten minutes walking from Egmore train station and some decent affordable restaurants and a post office.Just outside the entrance there is a bus stop from where you can take buses to Chennai central train/bus station. There are also a couple of banks with ATMs next door.My room was fine, a bit run down and old but spacious and clean. The service was good. They cleaned the room every day and provided toilet paper(one of the few budget/midrange places that do that in India),soap and newspapers.Aruna in particular, one of the women working at the reception,is really friendly and helpful.Breakfast is mainly indian style but good quality.I also had one lunch there and it was also very tasty.Wifi is only available at the lobby. There is a very pleasant garden where you can hang out.I felt it was a very safe place for a single female traveler in a chaotic city like Chennai.Overall i was very happy with my stay here.

If you are looking for a safe and central spot which wont burn a hole in your pocket then this is it!
The staff is courteous and attentive, the buffet spread is varied and well priced.
The Guest House also has a lot of greenery around so its great to take a walk around the campus itself. They also help with local transport if required that will suit any budget.
Its also safe for anyone travelling alone.

Room Tip: If you are travelling alone, let them know as you could get a double room on a single occupancy rate...

My husband and I have stayed here 2 or 3 times in the last 15 years enroute to Andhra Pradesh and found it a good safe place to stay. It is four years since our last visit and things have improved even more. This time we had a lot of problems with delayed baggage and the wonderful Aruna made many calls to the airport until the bags were finally located. During this stressful 3 days, YWCA was a haven of tranquillity with lovely peaceful well landscaped grounds, a pleasant reception /lounge area and a really splendid good value restaurant where we ate well with no upset tummies. We returned after our visit to AP for another 2 or 3 days before flying home and once again received a warm welcome and efficient service. You have access to wifi here, good food, rooms cleaned daily with fresh bedlinen (the quality of linen has improved over the years) a reasonable laundry service and Aruna will arrange pickups and dropoffs to the airport.
THis is still India and by western standards the rooms are very basic and could be improved - our last room had big gaps between the sliding windows which could let in mosquitos! We were very happy with our first non a/c room which had a nice quiet overhead fan which we found quite adequate. The second time our room was a/c with a fan too - a/c was a bit antiquated and rather noisy but fairly efficient . But we like the atmosphere and ethos of this non profit making guesthouse and think it provides a nice safe place in the heart of Chennai - and yes, we would certainly stay there again!

Stayed here in a twin fan room for 2 nights upon arriving in India.

Pros:
Close to Egmore train station so it was cheap and easy to arrive from the airport and get around Chennai.
Staff are friendly and helpful. (Especially Aruna who works at reception.)
Shower had hot water and great water pressure.
They clean the room daily and provide soap and toilet paper.
The included breakfast was pretty decent (we also had a buffet lunch for 170RS which was excellent.)

Cons:
We asked for a double bed room and were given a twin. (Not a big deal but I didn't feel like complaining at 12am when we arrived.)
The beds were not very comfortable.
No fly screens on the windows so mosquitoes are a problem.
They spend a lot of time cleaning the hotel but everything is very worn out. They really should start replacing or upgrading curtains, sheets, furniture etc.
It is very expensive for what it is. We paid around $25 per night which seemed really poor value for us given we had just arrived from Bangkok where we had stayed in a 4 star hotel (which came with air con, fridge, big comfy bed etc.) for $30 per night.

Options in Chennai seem pretty slim so I would recommend staying here if you don't mind the cost.

Room Tip: The fan room was fine.

Food is great and very reasonably priced, rooms are clean and mosquito free and the gardens and lake on the site are beautiful. Staff are polite and helpful but bare in mind English is not their first language, though I had no problems with misunderstandings.
Would definitely recommend, for this price you really couldn't ask for better in Chennai. Also as part of Young Women's Christian Association the guest house shares a campus with lots of projects to help disadvantaged women in the area - so all money goes to a great cause!
