Not great....Suitable for Business trips and not for family stays. The breakfast is outsourced to some other vendor in the same building, with some pathetic quality and limited options. Commuting is also tough as you don't get anything if you want to step out....

About the place:
I went for a workshop in IIT madras. So first of all it is convenient if you are going nowhere other than IIT. One of the gates of IIT campus is near to the ginger hotel. Just slip through that to reach anywhere within IIT Madras. You got to walk for about 5-10mins to avail the shuttle bus service. They say one shuttle bus starts at 9am going directly to IIT campus from Ginger Hotel but I never saw it coming in my three days stay. Anyway, the shuttle bus inside can even take you to the main gate if you dont want to call a taxi/auto to reach the main road. Keep in mind that the last shuttle bus is around 9pm if my memory is right.

About the hotel:
The hotel is placed at the top floor of a multi storied building. Infact,all the accommodating rooms are there only at the top floor dont mistake it for a multi storied hotel. You got to take the lift to reach the top floor and you find the reception there.

About the rooms:
The rooms were pretty okay. You got all the basic stuffs required and I felt it was little bit dusty when I got in. THere is no ventilation, completely enclosed. Bathrooms are also okay. The room I stayed had no sunlight. Except the dust part, it was pretty clean and tidy.

About the food:
It was absolutely not okay for me. They say its a complementary breakfast but what I got was just corn flakes and boiled egg. I was early for the breakfast as I need to attend the workshop. While I finished having the breakfast I saw them serving dosa or idli on the third day. Bare minimum is what you get.I felt they could make it better for the price they charge.

Hotel Ginger (Tharamani - Chennai) is somewhat different from other Ginger properties. Firstly, this is located on a floor within a Building. Secondly, anything to eat is available only on the ground floor - and only upto some fixed time. The breakfast is served in some area downstairs whose ambiance and cleanliness can definitely be improved. Further, either there is no AC in the area where breakfast is served or was not switched on when I was having it. Considering Chennai's weather, this is not a very pleasant thing.

The room size reminds you that you are in a Metro city! (I have stayed for long duration at Ginger Pondicherry and wished that rooms here were bit more spacious!)

The wifi does work well, staff is helpful and courteous and sleep quality is good.

Look, I used to teach in India and, as an American, you have certain expectations, but when you go to India, throw them out the window and let the culture flow through you. Yes, Ginger is not a 3-star or 4-star hotel as they claim in their marketing in western terms. But, it's not bad for the $60 USD it costs to stay there. As in most average hotels in India--the beds will be hard, bathroom may have some flaws and accommodations not always pristine, but overall--it was okay. It had a nice coffee shop open 24 hours a day off the hotel and the breakfast was not bad either. The place is smack dab in the middle of Chennai. I may not stay there again--but it is better than some hotels I stayed in Chennai that claim to be 4-stars.

Avoid this hotel, i had a very unpleasant experience. The restaurant is outsourced to external company and due to that they don't know how to handle hotel guests. They also made me wait for 1 hour to get the room ready. The hotel is in an office building and it feels like you are going to work with all your travel paraphernalia.

Room Tip: Personally i will never go there again.

This hotel is best avoidable, even for budget travellers. There is only one dining option downstairs , with very limited fare, and the room i stayed in had a leaking central AC. I had to wake up at 2amm in the morning to move to another room.

Your concern regarding the A/C leakage problem & the dining option has been taken up with the department head for corrective action.

Based on your feedback, the A/C leakage problem is fixed by our technical & maintenance team and in good working conditions. Also, the respective teams have been briefed to be more efficient to ensure that our guests don't face any such inconvenience. Furthermore, we will ensure that periodic checks are done for our rooms to avoid such inconvenience.

My family stayed at the ginger hotel in taramani in november. NOt the best location and is very difficult to locate with the attitude of the chennai auto drivers. But the view of lush gren campus of IIT is fantastic.
