“Way better options in Chennai”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2013

This hotel is definitely one of the cheaper options available in Chennai. However, it is only slightly cheaper than other Taj properties and definitely not worth the price charged. They had put me in their old tower and the rooms were badly maintained. The bathroom specially seemed a century old. Breakfast was poor and so was their cafe. I had to host a business dinner in one of their reputed restaurants but was highly disappointed.

This hotel has an amazing, classic feel to it. There may be certain areas where it needs a little renovation but in a sense that is part of its charm.

If you want to stay at a gleaming, modern hotel then this is certainly not for you. However, if you like a hotel with character it suits perfectly.

Of course, it still does the required elements very well - service is good, food is excellent and the beds are comnfortable. However, without doubt it is the general feel of this place that is its main attraction.

I continue to return, and love it every time.

As always for me I can forgive some issues in any hotel providing the staff make you welcome and go out of their way to help you enjoy your stay, and here the staff are exceptional; friendly, helpful and attentive without being too driven by tips. It's one of the oldest hotels in the city, and although some areas of the hotel like the carpets in the public areas and the wood in the bedroom could do with a touch-up, overall it has a very rustic and homely feel. The rooms are very comfortable with a solid bed, quality linens and choice of pillows plus a good powerful shower. Huge room service menu and a nice touch was if your ordered room service you get a free DVD, great idea. Nice to have a large, very clean and well maintained pool with excellent service and open 6-10pm, plus a quaint spa with some reasonably priced treatments. Breakfast was a huge buffet, and what I especially liked was the cooked to order options for the delicious local breakfast items of masala dosa, uttapams and fluffy puris with spicy sambhar, I had heard how expensive their Raintree restaurant was, and yes the Thali at 750 rupees was much higher than outside however considering the outstanding quality of ingredients and the quantity of food offered it was good value, and I especially liked the fabulous "chutney trolley" with a dozen wonderful fresh offerings plus the most unusual selection of crispy pappads. It is set back in the grounds of the hotel and the illuminated walk to reach it at nite is stunning, and if it was not for the hundreds of Mosquitos we would have ate in the garden. A couple of negatives: having to pay for Internet access, and the 2100 cost of the car to the airport, but nothing to spoil the overall very relaxing and satisfied feeling of staying in a place where the staff really do take great pride in what they do. With a little bit of investment this place would really be 5 star.

Room Tip: My room was a single and very small, with almost no light entering.

Was welcomed with an apple juice and the check in was swift and quick.
Room was a bit quaint but with a modern twist.
Wooden flooring with a rich carpet and a separate work area with an array of lights.
Bathroom was a bit of a let down with stains in the bathtub so a bit of work needed there.
Complimentary fruits were available and replenished everyday.
Room service was very prompt.
The breakfast spread sumptuous and the restaurant overlooks the pool.
The staff were brilliant.I stayed here during a festival and the staff called the stores to check if they were open for business before I could venture out.
Overall a good stay!

Stayed for 4 nights for a business trip. From the moment I arrived the staff could not do enough for me. Room was large and very luxurious, the free bottled water constantly replaced was very helpful.

I ate in the verandah restaurant, breakfast had a very good selection both western and Indian. In the evenings the buffet or the main menu gave a huge choice. Unfortunately had no time to sit by the pool but it looked very relaxing. Walked round the corner to spencer plaza with a selection of shops.

The hotel is made by its staff, I asked for some things I had left at home and they were sourced for me very quickly. Everyone I dealt with was very helpful and very keen to ensure I had everything I needed. As a first time visitor to India they made the trip memorable and I will stay at a taj hotel again when I return on holiday.

After much web searching and critique reading, looking for a comfortable, convenient hotel that could assist with local touring at an affordable price; we found this Hotel.
We selected its 'Premium Indulgence Package' that gave a free extra night. This package was good value and it lived up to its promotion name with an extremely large, well furnished, high ceiling room that had all the usual facilities- tea, coffee, frig, fruit, internet etc. Step outside our pool exit door directly to the large pool with nearby chair ,table and service. The refreshing swim before breakfast became a regular part of each day.
From breakfast to dinner we tried all hotel food outlets, none could be faulted in service or supply, timing or variety. There was no need during our 4 days to choose alternate food outlets.

Here was a deliberately retained slice from past elegant colonial days in decor and service and we joyfully participated. There was always the best of attention to any request.

We were interested in some clothing shopping and the sprawling, but dated, adjacent shopping center suited, however our need for larger sized garments defeated the local suppliers! Serious shoppers from our hotel visited the still relatively close by up-market shopping areas and 'malls'.

Prior email between a helpful Concierge set us up with a car and excellent driver, who returned overseas currency to us when given by mistake as part of a gratuity. We used him again. If returning to India we would also hire a local guide to further inform us and save reading from guide books while trying to look - cost would not be a factor, all very reasonable. The hotel transfers at start and finish were also seemless.

Chennai is currently a city under 'construction attack', with new buildings rising and an airport freeway build that means you need to allow for the long, frustrating traffic jams. This is the price of choosing to stay in the older, more picturesque administrative area as opposed to slightly out of town or beach-side, prefered we understand by returning visitors and business travellers but would not be for us.

The Taj Connemara is welcoming and gave peace of mind, knowing there was a safe, comfortable refuge to return to. It was one of our best ever hotel stays. It was sad to leave but as we were there to join a cruise it was time to move on , glad that we had had the foresight to arrive early.

Room Tip: The Premium Indulgence Rooms and if offered 'Package Deal' is a good choice. Hotel is '...
