Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

walked up to this church in the scorching heat. We stopped off for a bottle of water on the way up and the shop owner tried to severley rip us off .. but .. didnt get away with it. At the top the views over chennai are spectacular but someone will come over and try to charge you for the priveledge of taking photos. The church itself is ok and someone comes to give a little bit of background on it. Really nice spot to look over Chennai.

“Beautiful Structure and peaceful place . . .”

Make sure you get down to the tomb below the main altar (ask for directions). I was touring San Thome and noticed a Mass was going on through the plexiglass panel in front of the altar, My guide directed me to the Tomb and I was able to attend Mass. It was a very special experience. God Bless. Ken Fabbi, Canada

“Nice and Old Church on the shore of Marina Beach”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 September 2013

I happened to attend one of my friend's marriage at the church. Too good from inside and location is also superb. Located at the shore of the famous Marina Beach. It was really a fun to visit the place. It is one of the most famous churches in Chennai with some old history attached which my chirstian friends can better explain..anyways must visit..

What a treat to be able to see where St. Thomas is buried. Very holy place, only one of three places on earth where a deciple is buried at a church.
