This is newly constructed hotel and has excellent facilities. Room are tastefully done up with all modern amenities. The lobby and entrance are great. The restaurant is very good and food is very tasty. The hotel surroundings are very peaceful compared to noisy city of Chennai.

The staff is courteous and are ready to help. The place is very popular among the young executives for evening hang outs.

Overall very soothing and relaxing experience.

Room Tip: All rooms are similar.

We spent 3 nights in early December 2013 and loved the hotel. Chennai is a very busy city and located in a quiet neighborhood, the Raintree at St.Mary's is an oasis of tranquility. The rooms, amenities, service, and location are all excellent. The rooftop restaurant is not to be missed with its views of the city and the sea. The staff are exceptional. We would unhesitatingly return on our next Chennai visit.

The Raintree on St. Mary's Road has a younger sibling on Mount Road, but the St. Mary's Rd. location will continue to score, as one look at the clump of trees that surround it will tell. To be on the terrace in the morning or evening is so pleasant! In the mornings, you get to see parrots and crows and other birds flying by and being very active. (How often do you see parrots flying in pairs?) The location is perhaps a kilometer from the beach, and - in the evenings - you feel the sea-breeze strongly - a throwback to a couple of decades ago! In December or January, you may need to wear an extra layer of clothing - a miracle in Madras! The location of this Raintree hotel must represent at least a 5-degree cooling advantage - something that will come handy in summer!

There's construction going on on the middle floors (Floors 2-4, I think, and from 9am-6pm?), and you're warned about it at the time of check-in (not at the time of booking!) and given the option of staying at the Anna Salai (Mount Rd.) hotel for the same rates. Our room was on Floor 7, and we didn't have a problem with the noise. They say this hotel will look different when the construction is finished. I hope the changes are for the better, and the rates aren't hiked unreasonably.

The restaurants continue to please - the breakfast is world-class and a highlight of the stay (see reviews on TripAdvisor of the Rainbow restaurant - do not miss the dosa-stand or the filter coffee), the kebabs are very good at the terrace restaurant, and Chop Chay at a lower level allows a lighter meal. The best salad we came across was a frisee salad that came as a side with a grilled-fish entree. Havana - the bar/night-club in the nether parts of the building - in the afternoon is great for conversation. Havana at night is probably draining for anyone over 40.

The clientele is international. The restaurants and special nights attract locals as well as those who are visiting Chennai for lengthy stays. These are, of course, good signs at any hotel.

The staff keeps changing. (I'm sure this happens everywhere, but maybe some have moved to the Anna Salai hotel.) I recognized perhaps three employees who were with the hotel in 2010. What's constant is their friendliness. They appear trained to say 'vanakkam' at every turn (a bit overdone?), but the service is very good. Guests who stay for several days sometimes receive a gesture, in the form of a cake, on the day of check-out. The staff at the restaurants are knowledgeable, especially in Rainbow at the lobby level and Chop Chay in the basement. Room service is super-fast.

Overall, the staff's ability to make adjustments, based on a guest's specific needs and at the merest mention, remains an outstanding feature of The Raintree's service.

They aren't serving Indian wines at the moment, due presumably to a supply problem, but even if Sula and Riviera wines are missing, Kingfisher on tap is a good beer, and Royal Challenge a great whisky. Some of the imported wines can be expensive. India as a country seems weak on refrigeration :-), and it shows when you want a really chilled soft drink or sparkling water. The fresh juices are outstanding! While in Chennai, try the grape juice.

The rooms are very clean and comfortable - the mattresses and showers and so on. The curtains are dark and quite capable of keeping the light out, if you want to sleep in. The amenities are generous, and Biotique is a well-known brand of natural cosmetic products. (And housekeeping will load you with extra cosmetics or towels or bottles of water, on request.) The Raintree's electronic console of controls remains inscrutable for the first day or two. The air-conditioning really works. The windows don't open and there are no balconies - a bit frustrating but understandable considering the dust in much of Urban India, and also anyway the story at most hotels around the world. Noise is kept out efficiently, except on New Year's Eve. The suite we stayed in was very spacious, and had a bath-tub (in addition to the stall-shower) with a hand-held shower-head, and an extra toilet by the living-room.

The laundry services, if you need them, are very reliable. If Wi-Fi comes free with your room rate, be warned that it's the slower wireless connection. (This is something that's a bit below the belt.) A higher-speed connection is available for a charge.

The gym is limited in equipment but useful. The grind on the treadmill is made a little easier by a view of the sunrise from the gym.

You can pick up an auto-rickshaw outside the hotel at pretty much any time. It's an easy ride from this location to many of the city's neighborhoods. Many taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers in the city know The Raintree and that's helpful in getting back to the hotel from anywhere. (Do make sure you tell them, clearly, which Raintree location!) Now that auto-rickshaws are putting the meters on (flag-drop at Rs. 25), they are a great option especially in the cooler months.

A taxi service booked through the hotel (or, for that matter, a phone call made from the room) is expensive... regrettably the case with hotels everywhere.

Amma Nana, a store at a walkable distance from the hotel, is still going strong. It's on the expensive side, but carries a lot of useful stuff.

The concierge is knowledgeable and you probably do want to talk to him/her before you go out to explore the city. They can warn you, for example, if the museum you want to go to is closed on the day.

All in all, a boutique hotel that remains value for money, and a hotel that I'll choose any day over the 5-star hotels elsewhere in the city... the excitement of India can sometimes be sapping, and it surely is nice to be able to come back each evening to a room in a hotel of The Raintree's class.

Room Tip: For now, choose a room on Floors 6 or 7, as there's construction going on on Floors 2-4. Also...

I was on business trip for some official work in RA Puram area.

Rooms have modern fitting and are smaller in size compared to old properties like Taj or Sheraton or Chola. Was on short stay and rate was attractive so I choose this.

Breakfast spread is great and restaurant is reserved at ground floor restaurant. Above Sea Level restaurant located at rooftop along with pool has a stunning city view, fresh breeze adds flavors to the food.

Chinese restaurant at basement is a must visit.

At the basement there is a small pub too.

Best part is there staff, who are were attentive and friendly.

The stay here was extremely comfortable. The staff were warm and made us feel really special. The dinner on the rooftop restaurant is a must-have. Do not miss that!

The only downside was the constant construction that was happening 10am-6pm caused a bit of noise during the stay.

The location, however, is excellent and free from external road noise.
