Taking a train ride along the Himalayas at such a great height was a life time experience for us. It was much more than just a joy ride. The pace of the train is extremely slow and that perhaps added to the experience. The engine used even today is of the age-old British time. More thrilling part is the compartment we boarded may perhaps had witnessed legends like Mark Twain and Job Charnock. It takes you to the GHUM railway station where you can visit the train museum which is an awesome experience. The train also stops at Batasia Loop from where you can view the mighty Himalayas. The most catchy part of the journey were the hawker stalls over the railway lines which keep moving as the train comes and goes. The ticket can be booked from IRCTC website.

The toy train ride was eagerly awaited part of our trip and we had made booking well in advance but it did not live up to the expectation. The Batista loop is the only nice part of the ride. If you happens to sit on left side of the train than all you would see is drainage and filth. DHR Ghoom museum was worth the visit.

Try to get a seat on left side of train (facing forward). Only 3 hours from Kurseong to Darjeeling, so about 1 hour slower than road transport. Great views in the last 30 minutes of the trip.

Much better to take a picture of the quaint old steam train as it returns (2hrs after leaving) with it's slightly bored, slightly sooty passengers. Hillside seats never get reversed so unless you are on the outside at the start you will see little. Consolation is that even on the outside seats you see nothing that you could not have seen better from a car or on foot. The stop at the Gurhka memorial is OK but the memorial is fenced off from close viewing. The stop at Ghum allows you more of the same shopping as Darjeeling and a tawdry small old museum only likely to delight a complete train fanatic.
PS you don't buy your tickets at the main Darjeeling train ticket office!!! You go to a small side office and talk direct to the station manager.

The toy train chugged off slowly with a shrill and incessant whistle that warned anyone and everyone. The two carriages were packed with tourists.Be sure to book in advance. The windows could have been cleaner especially the ones at the top.The train meandered across the road to the other side flanking the mountains then back again to the roadside hugging the shops and the houses, all the the way to Ghoom, which is the oldest railway station. On the way we stopped at a War Memorial park for a photo shoot and at Ghoom there was a museum of the Darjeeling Himalaya Railway. All in all a pleasant outing.
