“Awesome Views”
Reviewed 4 April 2012

Took the toy train from Darjeeling to Ghoom. Amazing experience. Best to book in advance or you have to stand in line and if you are lucky you will get a ticket. But demand is great and its booked in advance

“Enjoy the view, every corner of the Darjeeling hill”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

There are several ways to get the most out of it. If you are a traveler who likes to get the flavor of the real local busy daily life, then you can just get a ticket in 2nd class and enjoy the crowd, the hawkers, the small hill stations and lots of turns and back and forth of the train to keep it in correct track (Z turns). But if you are a nature lover in quiet mood, then get a ticket in 1st class coach. The crowd will be out side of your window and you will enjoy the real calmness of the hills and the mountains sitting on your window seat.

It was built between 1879 and 1881 and is about 86 kilometres (53 mi) long. The elevation level is from about 100 m (328 ft) at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling. It operates daily return trip from Darjeeling to Kurseong. Actually it was upto Siliguri but due to land slides, it has been postponed and operates upto Kurseong only. Also there are tourist train operates from Darjeeling to Ghum station. Ghum is the most peak station in India.

“Tourist trap and polluting”
Reviewed 29 March 2012

Totally regret doing this. Extremely polluting and loud. Even all the locals we passed were covering their ears and mouths and giving us dirty looks! And Darjeeling is so dirty and the air quality is bad to begin with. I had a headache from breathing in the soot filled air and didn't enjoy it at all. It is kept running for the tourism but should be stopped for all the pollution it creates.
Also the persistent salespeople on the train platform are very aggressive and won't leave you alone. If you are the type of traveller that likes to stay off the beaten path then it is best to avoid this experience.
