“Lovely view of the mountains”

Bellevue Hotel is located bang in front of the mall, the main place of activity of tourists & locals. The climb to the hotel is steep, but worth it. True, there is no fire place in the rooms, but the prompt service & obedient staff more than make up for it. The people are courteous & always greet you with a smile to brighten up your otherwise chilly day. Room heaters or hot water bags are available on request, and you have to pay a nominal charge for the same. The view point at the terrace is breathtaking. Its an altogether different experience to have a hot cup of the famed darjeeling tea sitting on the terrace, overlooking the majestic Kanchenjunga.
Overall, a good place to check in.

I stayed at the original Hotel Bellevue two times and felt relief and awe on both occasions. Yes, it is a climb to get there, but what in India isn't worth a little work? And after the climb, walk out on the roof and behold the view that spreads before you! All your aches and grumblings will fade. Then dive into the life on the streets below. Believe me, having the highest hotel, away from all the sounds and smells of the motor traffic is worth any climb. After a rest, walk downstairs to the vendors that line the road and treat yourself to the best Mo-Mo's to be had. And yes the owner is old, but hey, he knows the Dahli Lama.

For anyone other than exhausted backpackers and travellers on very limited budgets, this hotel is simply not for you. To begin with, like everything in Darjeeling, one must climb...and climb. The best room is on the highest floor...with great views...and I don't even want to think about how many stairs there were to get there. The meager staff tries very hard (actually they were quite endearing); but there simply is no service. The bathroom geyser (for hot water) is operated by the hotel and available for use only early in the morning for about two hours. I realize that Darjeeling has a severe electricity and water shortage; but travellers should beware of what this means in the town's freezing and often rainy weather. The so-called `fireplaces' are not that at all; but non-functioning stoves, without draft or even wood. One is told that one has to `buy' 10 kilos of wood at a time! We've paid for wood before in India; but never a minimum of 10 kilos, which even if you were willing to buy this quantity, would take up all the space in the room. The sheets do not cover the mattress; and the pillows are better not even spoken about; the `cleaning' peremptory. The owner, who seemed most accommodating on the telephone, never put in an appearance. From the old photographs in the reception area, I gather that he's no youngster. He's obviously not given up on life...but he sure has given up on his hotel.

This hotel is confusingly located right beneath the "Old Main Bellevue", so you have to be sure to get to the right one. It's a very well maintained, clean, and friendly place that is a great value. They have several grades of rooms, depending on size, air con (usually not needed) etc. For 600 rupees a night, I had a room with wood paneling and floors, a beautiful view, and plenty of hot water, which can be a problem in Darjeeling. Only breakfast and tea are available, but what a treat to take a pot of tea up to the rooftop and drink in the sights and sounds below! The hotel is located right on the mall, so access to shops and restaurants is very easy. The staff are extremely helpful and treated all the guests like family. I can't wait to return!
