My husband and I had stayed there for 3 nights and we both enjoyed very much.
Location is good, near to the main room and train station. Breakfast area on the 3/F is so cozy and full of cultural decoration. Staff are all very friendly and nice. Highly recommended.

Located at the top of the town a few minutes walk from the main square and market area, Snow Lion Homestay is a very good choice for the budget traveller in Darjeeling. It doesn't look promising as you head up Gandhi road past the stray dogs and open rubbish tip in the street (I still hate that), but it's worth the walk.

Snow Lion operates more as a cross between a hotel and a homestay. The guest rooms are on the first and second floors, and those on the front of the property have views of Kangchenjunga (if you are lucky with the weather). In late October our room was decidedly chilly (the hotel is uninsulated and drafty) and the hot water heater for the shower only provided a few minutes' warmth, awkward if there are two of you. Breakfast is taken on the third floor where the family live, which can be a very nice experience. The family are friendly and care for their guests well but maintain a certain distance at the same time. One of the highlights of the hotel is the reading room next to reception, where there's a good bookshelf and comfy chairs. You can order tea and coffee here and while away a few hours.

We visited during Diwali and this caused no end of frustration as the holidays disrupted regular opening hours for most businesses. Here is where an efficient reception service could have been a godsend but unfortunately the Snowlion (which offers to book tours for you) fell into the same category as many Indian customer service experiences, and failed to show any initiative. So we were sent on a wild goose chase for our Sikkim permits to a government office which was closed and booked a tour to a tea plantation which was also closed. In both cases a simple phonecall beforehand would have saved us a lot of time and frustration. We were also told by the receptionist that the toy train was not running - good job we went and checked, because it was.

In short, a nice establishment that could be a real gem if they sorted their tour services out.

Snow Lion is a cold but cozy place to stay in Darjeeling. They provide space heaters (after a certain date) and many thick blankets but it's still cold in the room. Our room did have a view of the mountains, but it was cloud-covered for one of the days. It's just a short walk to the main shopping area, and the town itself is very walkable.

The family and staff are warm and welcoming. Eating breakfast in their top-floor living area is a treat -- its full of Tibetan cultural and religious artifacts.

We stayed there for two days during off season and really enjoyed our stay. This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. Clean room and toilet, clean linen, 24 hour hot water supply, good quality breakfast and above all ever smiling staff always eager to help. They even provided us with umbrellas when they saw us trying to go out in the rain.

The Snowlion Home Stay is an excellent little eight room hotel. The rooms are very clean, large yet cozy with continious hotwater, heaters, TV, free internet and a wonderful free breakfast. There is very good room service and a never ending source of tea, coffee or hot drinking water if you prefer. They are located on the same main road as the Mall and there are there are no unpleasent stairs tp deal with. If you want dinner in, they have room service with one of the best restaurants in Darjeeling. I arrived with a respiratoy infection (dumb) and they took care of me like one of the family. I can't say enough good things about this hotel. Something has interfered with their website so email them at: snowlionhomestay@gmail.com.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In the heart of Darjeeling, close to the Mall's shopping and entertainment, is "Snowlion Homestay." The hotel is owned & managed by a Tibetan family. Located on Gandhi Road, which is a continuation of the Mall Road, it provides an ideal base for the many local tourist attractions, whilst being in a central, upmarket area of the town. All our rooms have en suite (attached) bathroom with showers, hot & cold running water (24hrs), W.C, in-house telephone and remote control television with Cable TV (37 channels including BBC, Star TV, Zee, ESPN etc). We provide room heaters and hot water bottles at no additional cost during the winter season. WI-FI is freely accessible in the lounge. We would be happy to arrange for a taxi to collect you at BGD airport or NJP station. We have pick-up from BGD airport or NJP station and travel to Darjeeling (one way). If you choose to use us to be dropped back to the Airport or Station at the end of your stay, we will arrange it. The drive up to Darjeeling is 3hrs and is in any event very scenic. Often tourists choose to use a slightly longer (and even more scenic) route via Mirik Lake. This latter route is approximately 4 hrs. ... more   less
