Stayed for 3 days at the Viceroy, Darjeeling. By far, the best hotel that I could find in Darjeeling - very close to the center of the town and with a very good view of the Kanjenjunga. Try staying in the attic (fully wooden - floor and ceiling) at the top floor which offers a fantastic view of Kanjenjunga. The food was good. Not very satisfied with the service though. All our clothes got color stains when we gave it to the hotel laundery and when informed they did not even have the courtesy to apologize for the mess.

When you walk into the lobby you immediately come across a five-storey high column of black and white pictures of British royalty. Our group was given a welcome drink and a scarf, as happened at hotels in a number of places in these parts.

The elevator doesn't reach the ground floor, so you need to walk up a storey before you can use it. It has old-style mesh gates which, if not closed properly when you get out, render the elevator unusable for the next person who summons it. But this didn't often happen, and there were only five storeys anyway.

Rooms were comfortable. There was a mains switch for the electricity outside every room, so if you were feeling mischievous you could go around switching off everyone's power, leaving them in the dark and running away. I resisted the temptation.

Television reception was good, the shower was good (pressure and temperature), although there was only a small hot water tank (one long or two short showers only). The place was clean, with the exception of some mould on the back of the curtains. Beds were pretty hard, but they are most places in this neck of the woods, and I didn't find it uncomfortable.

The buffets in the restaurant were good, and, as we found at many places in India, there was always an abundance of waiters circling us ready to swoop as soon as we finished a course. I'm still not sure whether I appreciated this exemplary service or found it a little intrusive.

You can go up to the roof and gaze out at the Himalayas (through the smog). We did this early one morning. The previous morning we had made an early trek to Tiger Hill for the celebrated view but saw nothing but cloud.

This hotel is OK but certainly no where close to being a 3/4 star property as it claims. The rooms are clean but are small, thev views from most rooms is not so great. The restaurant is open till 10 and they expect you to place the order by 9:00Pm. The service level at the restaurant and room service can be rated as poor, they would often run out of food at the buffet breakfast since it is included in most of the rooms packages. The food at the restaurant canbe rated as good.

viceroy stands tall above the ex CAPITOL theatre and cinema hall.its location is excellent especially when the mt..kanchan decides to give a darshan to us --lesser mortals.
the decor is subdued, with some old photographs from times of british india adding to the aura of pre independant times.
the food could have been better .the hotel staff is quite friendly .thye hourly bell tolls from capitol clock tower which is on immediate neighbour hood adds to the charm of the ever foggy dargeeling.the only remorse is --DARGEELING IS GETTING DIRTIER BY THE MINUTE .
