“Kolkata's Lungs”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

The Maidan, or the vast, open, green area in the heart of Kolkata is a tourist paradise. Though the entire expanse of green is owned by the Indian Army, there is no restriction on entering it, walking, running or playing there. Manta times I have seen tourists just snoring away to glory underneath the numerous trees that dot the Maidan.

On the south is the glorious Race Course or the Royal Calcutta Turf Club while the east, west and northern horizons make the Kolkata skyline. Also, the most important land mark, the imposing Victoria Memorial, borders the south end side of the Maidan.

Just beware of touts and small time criminals before you let yourself loose. The entire experience however will leave you wanting to return there again.

“All this in the midst of one of the most populated city of the world ?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

The vast open space full of green lawns and lined with trees intermittently all around - it is hard to believe one is in Kolkata !!!
One has to be there on a Sunday morning to understand what it actually means to the city. Cricket games all around. As a casual stroller, it is possible to get into one of the teams playing a cricket match !!! The locals form their own team & come in early to RESERVE a pitch and then wait for other such teams who will fix an impromptu match on the spot. And if some team is short of a player, you can get lucky.
The quality of cricket is also fairly good. With many pitches lying adjacently, you need to be sharp and alert to know which ball is the one you are supposed to be fielding ! And you need to be alert so that you do not get hit by a ball of another match going on.
Such warmth and camaderie, with in-fighting due to certain incidences etc - it is a unique experience.
And to say nothing about the cost-effective street-side food available early morning / in the evenings......... Relishing indeed and yet not taxing to your pocket !!!!

“Maidan-Lungs of Kolkata”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

True to the name "Maidan" is a vast stretch of open land with full of greenary and a place to roam. A Metro Station exists at this place by name "Maidan".. Visitors and the people of Kolkata may get down at this station and reach the maidan. This is one of the places to be visited here..

It is also a home to numerous play grounds, including the famous cricketing venue Eden Gardens, several football stadia.,Maidan is the property of the Indian Army. It is a historical and cultural center of Kolkata as well as a center of leisure and entertainment for the people of Kolkata. Maidan is referred as the 'Lungs of Kolkata"

The Victoria Memorial is close by the Maidan. We enjoyed the Tonga ride which took us around maidan and it was pleasant too. As it is connected well by Tram and metro, it is easy to reach and enjoy a stroll.
