Bodhi Tree

Very ethnic, artistic and cosy place to stay.....it feels like a small museum. Bodhi Tree has just 5 rooms and carved out of a row house in a residential area. It never felt like staying in a standard or regular hotel....and made me felt relaxed and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent....freshly made and just sufficient. Free wi-fi is also an added plus.

The staff are friendly and the manager Mr. Santhu is truly helpful ans kind person.

Special thanks for upgrading my room to a bigger one.....look forward to coming back.

Room Tip: Not for families with children......or aged people.

Very clean , close to metro station , good breakfast . The only suggestion I would like to make is regarding poor light inside the room . its true there are 5 side lamps around the room and 1 reading light near the desk. but its very hard to read when in bed or even packing or unpacking. everything else is excellent

Decent place to stay boutique style. Stopped for one night. Good sized room - Tantrayana. Basic breakfast as we were leaving early and informed the reception the night before. Bathroom needs a bit of cleaning. Hotel not very difficult to reach. Good experience. Will go again.

Nice boutique style hotel. Good for a short stop over. Room small but nice. Bathroom dated. Breakfast TERRIBLE. Taxis cannot find this hotel or will not take you directly to front door but hotel is on a nice clean street and feels safe.

Yes the guest house is nicely decorated with object d'art but this alone does not warrant the price (we stayed in similarly decorated guest house in Varkala, Kerala for half the price). As in many Indian facilities the young staff try their best with limited English but we found the manager a bit arrogant. For example he said we could pay by credit card but could not process the transaction (strangely as our cards worked fine before and after this) therefore we had to pay by cash. The lighting in our room on the ground floor was very poor. The positives - the room and bathroom were clean, the location was 5 mins walk from metro station and ATM's, breakfast adequate and security was good. Options in Calcutta seem limited so if you are willing to stay out of the centre and willing to pay it's worth considering. We did find restaurants in this area hard to find.

We stayed at Bodhi Tree for five nights at Mahayana Suite, Kalachackra and Yogacara. The all guesthouse is a living museum, rich in indian handcrafts like beautiful statues of Buddha and hindu gods. Every detail has been well-groomed and well-finished in an inconcivable way. Each room is furnished amazingly and themed like rural india or contemporary india. The staff is very caring and maked us feel at home. Regarding this, I have to say that Bodhi Tree is the first place we, as budget travellersm saw in India where there's the room service of daily cleaning and changing of towels and bedsheet-amazing!!- Breakfast, which is included (like Wi-fi, which worked quite well for indian standards) was very varied and complete and comprehended an indian recipe, each day different, in addiction to other continental meals. The place is runned by Devdan-ji, thanks to his mother help and tips, a real special man whom I would like to thank and greet for the great stay! Bodhi Tree also organizes a lot of art expositions and meeting, which make feel you in a very educated and culturally enriched place. The location is great too, because is in a very pretty and modern district of south Kolkata, near to the metro and very quiet and safe.
We will keep in touch with Devdan and can't wait to come back there...

Room Tip: Kalachakra in my opinion is the best room for furnishing and appearance.

It's a pretty and an un-Indian place, very European, talking about the interior design now. It's locked behind a gate so you'll definitely feel safe. And the staff will go out and fetch whatever you need, if you need anything. It's very small, but it makes it all more worth it. You feel as if you're taken care of. The rooms are lovely, however bathrooms can be more updated. And hot water only lasts for 1 shower. The rooms have got safety deposit boxes; first one we saw in India. The beds are firm as bricks, but they are super clean and stylish.

They take extremely overpriced fees for airport transport, about 1600 rupees, so get a pre-paid yellow cab for 400 rupees. The manager is not the friendliest person on earth, however not rude. He's just not a manager and should perhaps do something else, work-wise.

The staff are anyhow very kind, humble and sincere, although their english is limited.

Dinner is amazing, but breakfast which is included is very poor.

I would definitely go back there again, if I ever go back to Kolkata. It's definitely worth a stay, especially if you're a couple and want a romantic place to stay!

Room Tip: View from the room Yogacara (ground floor, next to the lounge) is awful. I opened the curtain and fo...
