After some searching around online, we chose the Gulshan because it appeared to offer good value. Not so. For what you can get elsewhere in Calcutta, we found the rooms expensive.

We had an "Executive Deluxe" room which we were told slept two adults and two children. It only had two twin beds. When we enquired as to where the other beds were, we were told "In India, we don't count children for beds" (i.e. we assume they sleep with the parents).

As well "Executive Deluxe" is misleading. While the room was better than others in the hotel, it makes Motel 6 look like the Four Season's.

The staff were helpful but overall you can do better in Calcutta.

I stayed in Hotel Gulshan International in the Royd Street, Kolkata for two nights in April 2008. I found the hotel to be quite ordinary and could not understand why the room rent was quite high compared to the service they were providing. To start with, rooms are small, difficult to get hot water in the bathrooms. The food in the tiny restaurant in the basement is quite ordinary with few options for the breakfast. AC was old but it was working. There is not much space to sit and work in the room, so you spend most of the time on the bed. The positives are the location of the hotel (right in the heart of the Kolkata) and the various tourist locations of Kolkata which are located near by. You can find Park Street, Maidan, the famous Kolkata Museum, New Market, etc quite close by. Trams ply right in front of the hotel, but getting to the hotel in a taxi or going back from the hotel to airport in a taxi can be exasperating journeys due to Kolkata traffic jams. There is also another 'Hotel Gulshan Palace' by the same management in the near by Mirza Ghalib Street. There the room rents are a bit lower, but the quality of rooms is not worth staying there.

This hotel was very convenient to Park Street, Calcutta's major street. The room was air conditioned and had a private bathroom, which were my two main criteria. There was also a television with HBO, which was an added bonus. The rooms were not cleaned during the day (I only stayed for two nights, so I don't know whether they clean the rooms every few days or after each client leaves). Breakfast was modest (an 'omlet' and toast with butter and jelly) but sufficient. The front desk staff is friendly for the most part.

Stayed here for one night. The location is very good within walking distance to Park Street and near the older Kolkata buildings. Little dhabas and expensive restaurants all near each other. The rooms are small but clean with running water which is sometimes lacking in hotels in India. For Rs.1100 a night it was ok. air condition was good and fully adjustable. Service was good and you can order stuff in the room if you want and can even send one of the guys to buy things from outside for you ofcourse you have to tip them.

Travelling to Calcutta on a family "down memory lane" trip, this hotel was the perfect location for us personally.
The no-frills hotel is located on a busy, noisey, run down road (like most of the roads in Calcutta). There was about 18 room that I counted. We had three rooms as there were 5 of us in the group. Two of the rooms were quite dark, one of which had no view at all apart from the side of the building next door. The room I was in was room 501 which had recently been added onto the hotel. This was an "executive room" which meant we had a proper ashtray, fridge and a bath with an overhead shower which did not work properly. The bed was cozy and there was a table with 2 chairs. The TV had a couple of english speaking channels. There are no hairdryers in the room. The room was comfortable and bright although it could have done with a good scrub in the bathroom! They are in the middle of refurbishment in which they are upgrading the rooms which means that the rooms will be brighter (or should be). However because of this there is quite a lot of noise going on in the hotel and seeing that they start work approximately 7am and don't finish until 8pm, the noise can be a bit much if you spend time in your room.
Trying to get hot water was a bit of a battle. You had to run the water for at least 10 minutes, twiddle all the knobs and this did not guarantee you getting the hot water in the end. Some rooms were better at getting hot water than others. Some of the rooms only had wet rooms which meant that the whole bathroom got soaked!
There is a tiny restaurant which had 5 tables. We only had breakfast there which consisted of toast, omlette/fried eggs/scrambled eggs and tea. That was a struggle every morning just to get what we ordered. Luckily we have a good sense of humour and took things as they came. I must admit, that in my omlette I found an elastic band which has now put me off omlettes for life!!
If you are nice and friendly towards the staff, they will bend over backwards to help you and I thought the staff were lovely - especially Nazim who let me use their one and only computer to check my emails etc every night.
Some of the guests were quite inconsiderate and noisy at night but it was soon sorted out by the reception staff.
The Laundry service was good and extremely cheap - approx 30p per item.

The hotel has had a new facia put on the front which is glass panels. However the contractor forgot to leave spaces for the room windows to open out and covered the whole front meaning that the windows cannot open out to the front of the hotel.
There is a huge building site behind the hotel.
As i said earlier, the hotel is located in a noisey, busy, run down road near the corner of the road, where the trams pass by. You will be shocked by the state of the area - i was!
The "Mulla" starts calling at approx 5am for prayer, followed by the dogs howling, the trams start working, the cars, rickshaws and auto rickshaws start filling up the roads honking their horns constantly, the building works start too - its a very noisy place. Its not just at this hotel - this applies to most of them!!
If you come out of the hotel, turn right and then turn right at the corner, at the end of the road you will find some lovely restaurants which are fantastic and very reasonably priced. You will also find loads of shops etc if you keep walking.

If you take a taxi either agree a price with him or ask him to put the meter on. What ever shows on the meter you have to double to get the total to pay. The taxi's however are very cheap to use - just make sure you tell them to take the shortest route or you will find they will go the longest way round to charge you more!

There are dogs everywhere - they sleep by day and awake at night. I felt so sorry for them, some were in an awful state. They will bark at night at you but please just ignore them and walk by, if you threaten them they might attack - we ignored them and walked past them with no trouble at all.

There are people living and sleeping on the streets (and going to the toilet too!!), people trading from battered old carts etc but not once did I feel threatened or frightened. The people, who are so poor and have nothing, I found, were friendly and kind.

Across the road to the left, way down Elliot Road you will find the "West Bengal Womans Association". They do lovely food that you can order for lunch. All 5 of us ate for £1.50!!! If anyone visits, please take them a tea set as we noticed that they only seemed to have 5 odd cups. We were going to get them a set but never got the chance!!

Overall, I did like the hotel - it suited us fine and i loved Calcutta.
As soon as i have downloaded photos, i'll post some on here.

I stayed 2 nights at the Hotel Gulshan International. I had a standard A/C room with TV. It was clean, and the US$49 rate (booked through Travelguru.com) included breakfast and taxes. Hotel staff are friendly and efficient. The hotel is quite difficult to find, even for taxi drivers, so it's best to have a web map printed before arriving. Trams run outside the door, and there are restaurants within walking distance. Laundry service at the hotel is inexpensive and reliable,
