“Just a place to crash”
Reviewed 6 August 2012

I wasn't enamored of the place, for sure. Others have mentioned a musty, moldy smell, and that was the case with us, as well. There were mildewy spots on the lampshade in the room. Our room was on the top floor, all the way in the back, which meant we had 2 windows. One faced the building next door, and the "city view" from the other was lacking.

The beach across the street was a narrow stretch of sand, definitely not a place for sunbathing, barely a space for walking. "Shark Attack" signs were prominently posted. However, the small outside bar almost directly across the street made a really good caipirinha and had musical entertainment two nights of our trip.

Breakfast was good and plentiful.

Internet connection was sketchy, intermittent, and enormously frustrating --- but also free.

The elevator lurched in a very disconcerting way at "take off" and "landing".

Pool is tiny.

Water pressure in the shower was amazing.

Easy to catch a cab.

Cool street/crafts fair within walking distance, open 6 days (?) a week.

Photographs submitted by the hotel are technically accurate, but misleading. The desk staff was not particularly helpful or friendly.

Room Tip: Beach view rooms seem to be huge. They're probably numbers 101, 201 ... 901. We were in 908, way...

The room where we stayed was sweltering. The humidity from the sea leaves a very unpleasant smell in the room and in the corner, behind the curtain, the wall was completely covered with mold. On the first day, we found a lot of hair in the bathroom.

We tend to focus on location when traveling. However, in this case, despite the excellent location of the hotel, if you have the chance, stay elsewhere.

We reserved this hotel due to the good reviews and somewhat decent pictures, but mostly because of the location. When we got to the hotel at 3 am it took them more than half an hour to get us to your room and when we got there......First of all it looks as if the construction didn´t finish, bad paint job, floor. The shower is tiny and you can barely fit. The bed was awful and the sheets were stained. Need I say more? Ah, the breakfast wasn´t that great either, run, run far away to another hotel!

Stayed at the Boa Viagem Praia Hotel for 2 nights. When we arrived (late afternoon), we waited for over an hour for them to prepare our room. Turns out there was water leakage in the suite that we reserved and they were plastering and painting the room. They finally advised us of the situation and showed us the room. Since we did not want to stay in a room with wet plaster walls, they gave us the option of staying in a regular room with an ocean view. Room was clean enough, but everything looked like it was about 20 years old and very well used. Curtains were falling off the windows so wouldn't close all the way. The air conditioning was really just a strong fan but didn't really cool the room. The small bathroom window was rusted open and could not be shut. Luckily, it opened into the shower... If we hadn't already prepaid through hotels.com, we would have left and found somewhere else to stay.

My partner and I stayed there for 4 nights in August 2008. It is a nine-floor building situated on the main street in Boa Viagem right next to the beach. The main impression you get after passing the lobby and seeing the room is that the hotel is poorly maintained (shabby interior, rather old furniture, missing paint on the walls etc.) Due to high humidity and old air conditioning system the room gets quite sticky and a bit smelly.
Upside is that if you ask you can get a room with a view of the beach (nice at sunrise). The beach itself isn't really good for swimming (shark warning) or for passing time (too short during high tide).
The breakfast was nice - good selection of fresh fruit each morning. Probably after more than 4 days it would get dull as the offer doesn't change much.
The staff was very nice and helpful, they were very understanding when we asked for another room after seeing that the air-con wasn't working well in the first one. In the other room we got the air-con was also of questionable quality and rather loud but at least the room was bigger.
Note, only one member of staff we talked to spoke English. If you speak at least some Portuguese it's a much safer bet.
The location of the hotel was ok for exploring some near by interesting places like Olinda. We also booked a trip with a mini-van to Porto de Galinhas through the hotel.
We mostly used taxis to get around - the shopping centre (with a good food court) is less than a 10min ride away (the cost is around 8 reals).
Recife isn't exactly worth spending too much time on, but it was an ok base for getting over jet lag and exploring the surrounding area.
All in all, if we would go to Recife again we'd probably choose another place to stay but this one was all right for the reasonable price we got.

I am writing this review as there is very little information available about accommodation in Recife. This hotel is not a luxury option but has a lot to recommend it. The pool area is pleasant and is directly above the promenade, good spot to watch the world go by. The rooms are basic but clean and well supplied. We paid the few dollars extra for the "suite" which is actually just an additional portion with 2 beds (no closets, bedside cabinets etc) from our room on the top (9th) floor, we had a spectacular ocean view but unfortunately no balcony. There is a small shop in the lobby area where you can buy drinks, water etc and there is a refidgerator in the room. The hotel is in a very central part of Boa Viagem a few steps away from the Mar hotel, a much more expensive luxury option. There is a good supermarket about 15 mins stroll away and the night market at Praca Boa Viagem is also a easy stroll away. I would use the hotel again as I felt it was a good option for the location, budget and afforded a good nights sleep as there was no noise in our room (perhaps due to being on 9th floor)
