“Boll Weevil Crazy!”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

It is interesting to hear the history behind this bug and see this little monument in the middle of downtown Enterprise. This is the only landmark dedicated to a insect in the U.S. I believe. This town reveres the symbol of this bug. There is even an ice cream dedicated to it at Milky Moo's.

“Don't go out of your way to see this”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

The boll weevil monument is simply a statue of a woman holding a bug above her head. The Boll Weevil Monument in downtown Enterprise, Alabama, United States is a landmark and tribute erected by the citizens of Enterprise in 1919 to show their appreciation to an insect, the boll weevil, for its profound influence on the area's agriculture and economy. Hailing the beetle as a "herald of prosperity". If you want to take picture of it to show your friends and laugh then it will be worth the trip for you.

“See it once, then move on...”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Come see our giant golden bug. Or not.
Apparently reviews must be 100 characters in length, but there's not that much to write about this "monument."
It's an average size statue in the middle of the road. You don't even have to stop driving to see it all. There.

“I live here.”

It's a historical marker and small stature that garners amusement only when some bored local kids dump dish detergent in the fountain or steal the bug altogether. Ho hum.

“Strange, kitschy monument”
Reviewed 4 July 2013

The Boll Weevil monument may well be the only public, government sanctioned tribute to an insect. Apparently, back at the turn of the previous century, cotton was king in lower Alabama. At some point, however, an infestation of boll weevils nearly wiped out the cotton crops, and local farmers were forced to diversify, and many of them ended up planing peanuts, which were not susceptible to boll weevil attacks. In the end, peanuts became a much more profitable cash crop, and so in 1919, the monument was erected. The Monument consists of a statue of a woman holding a pedestal with a boll weevil perched on top.
