This is one of those hidden away pieces of history that can be easily missed. You can tell that much work has been done to preserve this site. We enjoyed reading all the poster that related to the Union Army capturing this fort. It is interesting that Fort Morgan road was the same path followed by the Union corp. this was a fun trip on a day that was too cloudy and rainy to spend on the beach.

Only 20 miles from Gulf Shores, this is an easy diversion from the beach if you have a cloudy day. There is also a car ferry from Fort Morgan to Fort Gaines on the other side of Mobile Bay. Fort Gaines is smaller but also worth the trip. Look at the website for Fort Morgan to arrive for a free guided tour (free after paying the entrance fee). The tour of Fort Morgan takes about an hour and looking around the rest of the big fort and its museum takes about another hour (or more). There are remnants of the rails that carried carts of ammunition from the magazine supply to the various cannons. To get to all the cannons, a turntable was used which fit all four wheels of a cart (see pictures)
I was not satisfied by many of the explanations of fort terminology given in any of the several books I referred to, so I wrote my own summary and that typed sheet is with the pictures.
"Tacky Jacks 2" and "Sassy Bass" are good lunch stops on the Fort Morgan road (Route 180).

We stayed at an RV resort on Fort Morgan Road, west of highway 59. This trail ran right by it, so we decided to ride it on our bikes. Going east from the resort the trail takes you on a nice ride About (13 miles) around Shelby lake. There are other parts of the trail that split off from the main trail, and signs are very faded, so it is not well marked (what trail goes where). Google maps on our cell phone helped clarify the trail. That is about the only negative thing I can say. The trail was beautiful in most parts. The parts that shared the road with cars, always had posts protecting riders/walkers from cars that may veer off the road, and bikes/walkers from veering into the road. We rode this trail along the canal, through the state park campground, along the beach, and around shelby lake (16 miles). The following day we rode west, toward Fort Morgan. The trail went about 3 miles then abruptly ended. I sure hope they plan to continue this trail out in this direction because it would make and extremely beautiful ride. I do not recommend continuing the ride on the road as the road has almost no shoulder and traffic is fast, and fairly consistent.

Nice asphalt trail meandering along side the Ft Morgan road.

Several places to sit down for a break or to just enjoy the scenery.

They also have tools on cables so you could work on your bike as well as tire pumps at stations along the trail.

Lots of scenery to see, saw a lot of birds, otherwise not too exciting. The shoreline was kind of fun to check out and explore.
