State Park Cabins-Monte Sano
Reviewed 2 May 2014

Amazing....this park is close to Huntsville, easy access to grocery stores and other things. Cabin #1 was at the end of the road and lovely. Screened in porch and all the amenities of a hotel but better! It is quiet, beautiful and restful. The cabin was well equipped, the kitchen had everything we needed, firewood was supplied for the super fireplace. Beautiful view from out our windows! Would loved to have spent more than one night there. We got there late, there was no difficulty checking in, out keys were posted outside the office for late arrival and check out was easy the next morning. Be sure (if you are of a certain age) to ask for the senior discount, it's not much but a little savings is always a good thing. If you are in Huntsville, forego the hotel and stay here, you won't be sorry and you are close to everything while seeming to be a world away!

Room Tip: Cabin #1 is at the end of the row of a few cabins, only one other cabin on one side of this....end o...

I am going to start this review by mentioning that the ONLY reason I am giving them a bad rating is because of the roaches. I have a phobia about roaches and Cabin #9 was full of them! We slept with the lights on the whole time and had it not been for the fact that we met family that had traveled from Oklahoma in their RV, we wouldve left after the first night. I did tell the staff and I believe they sprayed while we were gone, but it didnt affect the many roaches the cabin had. To be fair, it's a cabin in the woods, but when we stayed at Cheaha State Park it was roach free. The entire rest of Monte Sano State Park was extremely enjoyable.

Room Tip: We were in cabin #9. Beautiful views, just wish there werent any roaches. The shower also didnt drai...

I hate that you had this issue. We try to keep our creepy crawly friends OUTSIDE, but they often make their way in. I'll make sure that someone addresses the problem in hopes of preventing future guests facing the same circumstance.

We spent three nights in Cabin #1 in Monte Damp State Park. Much better than a hotel, nice view, a little old fashioned but very comfortable. Basic cable but a surprisingly good number of tv channels. Only drawback was the variety of insects we found in our bed each morning, ranging from spiders to centipedes. But this is a rustic cabin and some minor things like a bug or two are forgiveable. Excellent walking trails close by. The park itself is small and lacks some of the amenities found in larger state parks but we enjoyed the peace and the views and we will stay here again.

We stayed here while my child was at Space Camp. Cabin #4 doesn't have a screened in porch but a picnic table that was nice to sit out and look at the scenery in the open air. The room had a double and twin bed, shower, microwave, fridge, electric stove, sink, pothholders, utensils and pots and pans and dishwashing liquid. We were not given wood for fire, we had to purchase. Our room was not cleaned for the four night stay, though we were given extra towels and garbage bags after three.
Yes there are bugs, you are in the forest! My best suggestion is as soon as you get there to take the broom and your shoe and collect all the cobwebs and bugs in the room you can find. Bring a newspaper and use it to stuff any tears in the screen doors or door frame gaps. The only bugs we saw in the room were harmless, crickets, moths, daddy long legs, and a millipede (no roaches).
That being said the views were incredible, it was quiet and there were a variety of trails. There is a great playground for the kids and the planetarium which we didnt visit. There are two cabins that are animal friendly. I would definitely stay there again, it was much better than the La Quinta we stayed at on University.

Room Tip: All cabins have panoramic views

We stayed here a couple of nights while visiting family. The cabin was old & well-used, but relatively clean. We wanted a nice, quiet place to stay--which this was except for the large family staying at the cabin next door. The kids had lots of big wheels and bicycles, so it was a bit loud during the day. That part was disappointing. Otherwise, nice cabin with a beautiful view.

What a wonderful park! The cabins are what you're to read about though... Small, cozy, wonderful view! Not too close, but close enough you can wave to your neighbor if you see them - and to me, is nice to not be TOO isolated for safety's sake. Went in March, so not much foliage - but can just imagine what it would be like in the fall! Was in Cabin #4, one of the one's with a patio instead of screened in porch. For this time of year (no bugs) that was perfect. Couple tips / advice: The TV was nice and modern - had all the hookups if you wanted to bring DVD player. Website lists only basic cable, but there was the standard "new" basic Comcast with dozens of channels. Make sure you bring starter log(s) if cool! Next time I will bring paper plates / cups. The kitchen is adequate (oven, stove, microwave, toaster, fridge) but cleaning them is a bit of hassle with only dish towels and one has to wonder how clean they were left by the prior occupant. Be careful w/ oven - tended to cook hot. Bring aluminum foil if you're going to eat a frozen pizza. Foil would have been more convienient that cookie sheet for biscuits also. Also, the outdoor grill is typical park grill - you'll want foil for that! Refridgerator (full sized) had an icemaker, so no need to buy bagged ice for the cabin itself. You'll definately want a flashlight or two. The lighting is dim (appropriately) and hooking up tv things, etc. it came in handy. One thing I went in to the weekend not knowing was that the wood provided is replaced each day. I skimped the first night thinking had to make it last, but pickup came around the next morning to replenish. Nice 1.2 mile trail you can hop on near by the cabins if you just want a casual stroll. Camp store was very nice. Decent prices on most things - and you'll want to have access to everything you need vs. going back outside the park to a store in town. One last thing, no internet service. There was a weak public signal, but couldn't connect. Didn't expect it - but would've liked to have not wondered before going :)

My husband and I stayed at one of the cabins (#9) for the weekend while we were attending a hiking conference. Absolutely gorgeous. The cabins are spaced far enough apart that one feels quite secluded. Firewood is provided free the first night and is $10 per bundle thereafter. Our cabin was one-room with a queen bed and a twin bed, sofa, TV, dining table, and kitchen in one room and a separate bathroom. Perfect for a couple looking for a romantic getaway. Outside the front door, a screened porch with chairs allowed one to sit and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. The park is situated high enough above the city of Huntsville to get magnificient views of the night sky without light pollution. I wish we could have stayed a week! We will be back.
