After reading several reviews questioning the cleanliness of the Inn, I have to say this is a very old building with lots of rooms and wood, and those of you who have complained about cobwebs and/or dust should think about the age of the building, how old it is, how hard it must be to keep all of it shining and spotless, especially when shining and spotless is not what this place is all about. If you want that, go to a new hotel somewhere. I am sure you will find something to complain about there as well. This hotel, we call it the Old Lady, has so much charm, the food is wonderful, Cynthia the Innkeeper cannot be any more informative, charming, funny or personable. When you go to an old, old, old hotel or bed and breakfast, why should you expect something slick? This is all about southern charm, company, friends, food, comfort, relaxation and ambiance. It's not about sterility, folks. I happen to personally know these folks spend a lot of time taking care of the place, and of the guests. It's a wonderful place, and I hope you people out there dont fall for the complainers and the naysayers....go to the Mentone Inn if you just want a relaxing Southern time.

Room Tip: There are small rooms with one bed, and rooms with two beds. Ask about the differences if you have m...

Our stay this past weekend at the Mentone Inn B&B was fantastic, especially the absolutely delicious Southern breakfasts. We really loved our room with its beadboard walls and ceiling, plenty of hot water, a ceiling fan and very comfortable vintage beds with quilts and quality linens. Another great aspect is the wrap-around front porch, with its rockers and swings. We're planning a winter visit next time, hoping for a fire in the big fireplace. Although it was a "full house" weekend, the innkeeper treated us all like honored guests. Many of the others there this weekend had stayed there before, and we certainly see why they returned.

The Mentone Inn has been a favorite of ours for years, and since Cynthia took over it has gotten even better. There have been several wonderful Innkeepers there, and a couple who were not so wonderful, and the "old lady" as we call the inn, deserves someone wonderful to take care of her. I would suggest going to all of you, but dont be expecting a slick, up to date trip. this inn is for real. It is old, historic and has great ambiance.......and we love the "linger longer" shelter outside.you who love the beauty of old things should all go spend some time at the Mentone Inn....thank you Cynthia for all you do for the inn and its guests!

First of all, let me say I had to put in a date of stay to be able to leave these notes. We DID NOT stay there in November of this year. Had we stayed it would've been leisure, and it would've been with my husband.

My husband and I booked a room in the Mentone Inn almost two years ago now. We were going up for Thanksgiving, flying in our own plane and were planning on getting there for Thanksgiving Day. Ms. Cynthia told us there would be no cooking that day, but we were welcome to join in her family feast. We were pleasantly delighted with this invitation. I baked two key lime pies to contribute to the feast. We took off, and had some engine trouble. We had to cancel our trip. I called right away, and they said, no problem, they would not even charge one night. Then we got our Visa bill and they had charged us for two nights! We would've accepted the one night, even though it could've been a life ending decision had we decided to try to go to keep from having that. But not two nights. Well, after many conversations of being assured we would get a credit for one night we never did. Supposedly their new accountant would not allow refunds, so they told us we could extend our stay to Dec. 31, 2010.

Many unforseen events happened to our family in that time, and we could not get up there. I called about four months ago and found out that the Inn had been sold, and the new owner and I tried to find a weekend available. She finally said she would e-mail me a voucher and extend it into the spring of 2011, which we agreed upon. Now I have not heard from her about that either. And I have tried for several days to call the 800 number and the 256 area code number and get no answer, no message, nothing.

I don't know how they stay in business and run an Inn with this very poor customer service. And I felt it would behoove other guests to be very cautious about booking a room etc. We are VERY disappointed to say the least, although in reading the reviews over the last year or so it sounds like the place is not too great, so maybe we are better off. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone.

mentoneinn, General Manager at Mentone Inn, responded to this review, 30 November 2010
The incident in question happened in 2008. A gift certificate was issued by the "then" Innkeeper Gloria, with a one year expiration date. Gloria left the Inn in APRIL 2009 and the New General Manager agreed to honor this certificate for the agreed time line of one year. It expired December 2009. It is now December 2010.
The Inn has not been sold...It has been owned by the same LLC for 11 years. We are proud of our B&B, clean rooms, great food, and a cozy, homey atmosphere. We strive for customer satisfaction, and apologize for any trouble you have had.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay with the delightful Ms. Cynthia who was a gracious, yet unobtrusive hostess as well as a fine Southern cook. She was extremely helpful with extensive local knowledge. The Inn has much ambiance and is quite comfortable. It is 100 years old, not the Ritz Carleton, so be clear about what you are wanting. Clean enough, comfy bed, plenty of hot water and good plumbing at fair prices. Other guests were friendly as well, so the "vibes" were good, but, then again, that's what we always attract....And eat at The Wildflower when you visit.

My husband and I were So looking forward to staying at The Mentone Inn. We drove up to meet friends and enjoy the beautiful fall weather. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised at the location and the overall look of the house... from the outside!! We walked into the inn to find a nice fire in the fireplace, looked cozy... until we were lead upstairs to our room, the deer run room. We walked into a dungeon! It was very dark and dingy. That was to cover up the dirt! The room was very worn and tired, dirty stained carpet, old drapes. The shower was just plain nasty with old towels and very old sheets. It is a shame, because this old historical home could be so cool to stay in, but it really needs to be refurbished badly. We have stayed in many B & B's across the Southeast, so were lookng forward to at least a wonderful breakfast. Hoping to be served a 2 or 3 course breakfast. That's the reason we choose B & B's.... much to our dismay, it was a buffet. The spread was decent, but I'll have to admit, we WERE disappointed. This was our first trip to Mentone after living in Alabama for 25 + years. Did not make for a good experience. Truly a shame.
