Having been in over-crowded Baga Beach we made a last minute decision to stay in Anjuna. As we were visiting the Wednesday market anyway we decided we may as well get somewhere to stay close by so searched the IndiaMike and Tripadvisor sites for good places - taking advantage of slinging the rucksack onto our backs and moving on. We called Martha’s the night before and arrived early the next morning. Martha and her family are so friendly and even with a basic guest house they made such a difference to our trip. They are more than willing to help you out with anything and are so welcoming to their home/guesthouse which has about 20 rooms.
Martha’s is a perfect location for visiting the market and we rented a scooter from Patrick for 250 rupees which is a must for the area as you get to see so much more than you would on foot and you can have several visits to the market being able to pack your buys into the seat and drive off! The market is great for wood carved elephants, pashminas, fake watches and t-shirts, handbags, jewellery and the rest and we did the most shopping here in the whole of our trip. Having the scooter meant we also saw Anjuna beach, Vagator beach and Mapusa town centre. All with great views over the cliffs into the see and also great beaches for sunbathing – very quite and secluded.
There’s a great bar at Vagator called Sea Valley where you can watch the sunset and get some fabulous pictures. Anjuna has plenty bars and restaurants on way to beach too.
The best thing though is how friendly Martha and Paul and their family were and although it was only a one night stay we feel like we made friends with the family in that short space of time and after escaping from Anjuna it changed our trip!! Patrick (Martha’s son) even gave us a lift to the airport for a very good price.
