Ranked #15 of 244 Calangute B&B and Inns
Reviewed 2 August 2012

I was searching for a nice place to stay anywhere at calangute on tripadvisor. There were few hundreds of options. I then found Dona Julia, read all the guest reviews. Most of them were positive and a few negative once too. The thing which highly impressed me was Mr Lloyd (the owner) was reply to all the negative reviews. Also most of the negative reviews were so childish and you could not have blamed the resort management for those. People wrote about Mongoose, cockroaches, mosquitoes and electricity.
I decided to give it a try, Tough I had to stay for 5 days, I booked the room just for two days. I checked in on 26th June 2012, rooms were unexpectedly large with a tv, refrigerator, dressing table, a cupboard etc etc. Window had mosquito nets and also a mosquito repellent was provided. Bathroom too was large and was very very clean.
Kishore the manager arranged me a bike, he too was very friendly and helpful.
Swimming pool was cleaned every.
Food was quite Ok. Not that great to be frank.

Allover this is the place to stay, I will recommend my friends and would like to stay here anytime when I return :)
Thanks to Mr Lloyd for all his kind help on the emails as well.....

Room Tip: First floor blue building is good....

Not a good experience!
Faced number of issues during my 5 day stay..
1. Electricity - No backup. So even if you have booked AC rooms or normal, be ready to face the heat if your visit is not during winters.
2. Mini Bar & TV didn’t work, had to make numerous complaints to finally get the bar working, but TV was not resolved.
3 . Pests - Mosquitoes bite when no electricity, cos the electric repellents don't work!
4. Cockroaches – Imaging a big cockroach crawling over you in darkness, Clicked a pic of it in the morning when I finally got it!
5. Mongoose in the pool – Had selected this property due to the “nice reviews” of the pool… But to my horror saw that it was a water hole for a family of resident mongoose.. Banned my kids from entering the pool! Good for nature lovers though! Check the Pic.
6. Intercom didn’t work, had to walk over for every small need, be it no water in room to Tea or dinner.

Tip –
1. Take a bike/car on rent. Beach is near, but everything else is far. Its on Calangute beach all rite but not “in canangute”, so if you plan to visit the market for say medicine or a tourist bus.. be ready to pay 150 bucks to the cab guy for the 3 kilometer ride to Calangute.
2. Don’t pay 100% advance, else you are stuck!

Room Tip: 1. Take a bike/car on rent. Beach is near, but everything else is far. Its on Calangute beach all ri...

i think there should be a little responsible reporting when putting up a public feedback like the one our valuable guest has. the motive of tripadvisor feedback is to help other guest while choosing a place to stay. but when someone puts up issues which are incorrect it just misguides and defeats the entire purpose.
at the onset we clearly state we are a budget property. we have power backup for all the passage ways and garden during a power faillure. during the monsoons we do have power faillures in Goa. these may be frequest but not usually for very long. i dont think a guest can expect genset power packup in a budget accomodation offering him an ac room with tv, fridge , intercom, comp wifi and swimming pool for a price of just Rs 1000/night. its just not possible. if that is a expectation then a 3 star property (costing thrice the amount) would be a good choice.
all our common lighting and intercoms have invertor backup.
the second issue he has mentioned is mosuitoes. all of Goa has this problem during the rains. we do our best here. all windows have mosquito nets and rooms are provided with mosquito repellants (which obviously dont work for the short period during power cuts). cant blame us for mosquitoes outside. just not fair.
he says minibar and tv did not work. we dont even have a minibar. we provide a refrigerator in the room and cable tv (again would not work during a power cut). we do not keep tvs that dont work. if a guest has a problem he has to contact us and a replacement is done. our intercoms are on invertor backup so the question of it not working doesnt arrive, if there is a problem then we attend to it as soon as it is informed to us.
finally the issue about our swimming pool. with great pride i say that the pool is cleant twice a day with the latest filtration system. we have to do this as guest come from the beach and use the pool. i can vouch for the cleanliness there. i personally go swimming with my daughters (1 yr and 5 yrs). the claims made by this guest is ridiculus about animals in the pool. our property is lush green and you may spot some mangoose very ovccasionally in the garden . but in the pool. Ridiculous!
he also mentioned about having to stay for all days because of prior payment. let me clarrify that we take only 1 days security deposit and the balance is paid on check out. there is no compulsion of stay from our side and if paid extra the amount is refunded if the stay is cut short. this can be clarrified with any of our guest.
we take a lot of care to ensure everything is fine here and it would be really useful if the guest can inform us about any problem during their stay. we could fix whatever is in our hands. but mentioning it only after checkout on a public forum is very unprofessional and done with ill motive.

We stayed in the resort from 21st Feb 2012 till 25th Feb 2012. Resort is really value for money.
Best part is:
1. Exact 2mins walk from Calangute Beach.
2. Amazingly tasty North Indian and Goan food (Please do not try spring rolls). However, sometimes you will need to ask specifically for different stuffs (like tissue paper/spoons/water bottle etc. if you are availing room service) from the Restaurant Staff.
3. Neat and clean swiming pool.
4. Resort Staff is ok.

Dr. Lloyd Souza, the owner of Dona Julia Resort is very very humble and helpful person. I am extremly thankful to him for making arrangements for my pick-up from airport at the last moment on a very short notice, for upgrading my accommodation to Superior room and for my 1st Anniversary and charging nothing for the same.
I would recommend this resort for family/couple/groups/all.

Room Tip: Location for all rooms is good but try to go for rooms facing swiming pool.

I visited this hotel with family from 09.01.12 to 12.01.12. We were there for three days. There are some great things about this hotel.
1. Proximity to beach - This hotel is around 250 metres from beach. It takes only two minutes to reach the beach.

2. Open space - There is sufficient open space for children to play and relax for elders.

3. Greenery - Lot of coconut trees are planted around hotel, so it was cool view and atmosphere.

4. Super clean swimming pool - Swimming pool was being cleaned daily, it was super clean and well maintained. Though it is small one, still it is ok to enjoy in water. Depth of swimming pool ranges between 3 ft to 5 ft. Length is around 16 ft. One more advantage about swimming. Unlike other hotels, Dona Julia hotel people were not forcing females to were a swimming costume. So it was very comfortable for all to enjoy in water.

5. Big Rooms and Bathrooms - Room size in which we stayed was around 14ft x 14ft. Bathroom was also around 8ft x 7ft. Room was having a balcony with pool view. Rooms were neat and clean. Rooms were inclusive of a fridge.

6. Tariff - It was unbelievable - Rs. 1200 per day. One cannot find a hotel like this even at a non tourist place. Considering the hotel location near calangute beach, the tariff was too low.

7. Location - It is little bit inside. So there is no traffic disturbance.

Negative points -
1. Restaurant was average. But this problem can be solved by having food outside.
2. Access to beach is not direct from hotel. One has to pass through the common road and a small market.

Overall it was a great value for money. When ever you are in a place like goa, one must stay at a beach resort only and the beach must be the number one beach like Calangute.
I will definitely recommend this hotel to all budget travelers.

If you are looking for excellent quality resorts. Then this is not the suitable option. There are so many great resorts in Goa. But you will not find any resort of this quality at this price. I If price is a matter of concern for you. Then this is the best option.

Room Tip: Take a room on first floor only. Take a room with a pool view only. There are some rooms on back sid...

While searching for hotels in Goa for our honeymoon , we were really confused. I had made an excel of around 100 hotels i was finding worth staying. One day i came across this dona Julia hotel & talked about it with my husband to be (now my husband) .We both read all the reviews about this hotel & started the talks directly with Mr. Lloyd Souza the owner.
Ww finalised the deal & booked Dona Julia for 5 days from 25Nov to 29Nov 2011.Rest 3 days we booked Colva residency in south Goa.
We were both a little worried as to how the hotel would be,but when we reached the hotel,we simply loved it.Our Delux room was really very good, neat & clean ,& the balcony view of the pool was something we loved. Our room was cleaned every day during our visit & bathrooms were also very clean.
We would dip in the pool early morning (pool was also kept very clean) & enjoy alot. Pool is the real asset of this place according to me,lush greenary all around.
Goa is a place one does'nt stay in the room all the time, so an affordable place like dona julia is the best option. Although we could not meet Lloyd but Kishore ,the manager was extremely helpful ,got us an activa for 4days & also got the taxi booked for us, he also came to meet us in our room the last day to wish us goodluck for future. We also had chicken & biryani last day at the hotel in our room due to rains & found the food fine. Dona Julia can focus a bit more on dining services, that is only one suggestion i can give to them.
Really Dona Julia we thank you for making our stay so wonderful & we thoroughly missed you during our last 3 days at colva residency when i found a lizard on my roof top :D
When ever i return back to Goa this is the place for me, iv already told my husband that we will stay in the same room, same hotel whenever we come back.
Great Job, a hassle free hotel for one & all.

Room Tip: We stayed in the blue suoerior room & found them too good.

I was there in Dona Julia last month and i enjoyed the stay at this place. Its a beautiful hotel with required facilities. small and beautiful shaddy swimming pool is awsome... located near to the beach but away from crowded calangute junction. Delicous food and small and clear resturant.

This hotel is ill-maintained with inexperienced staff. Surely this was not designed as hotel rooms but something else. Door locks and latches were in bad shape. Was shocked to see a new food menu on second day, with rates upto 50% higher. The bed sheet and towels were not so clean, even though rooms were bigger. The pool and its adjoining green area with trees was provided only comfort. This place has all the potential to be a great relaxing resort, but with only good management & service, which was missing.

Room Tip: Incase, you are checking in, prefer rooms on first floor.

we thank the review of our guest. it would have been a lot more useful if the feedback was given during your stay as we would do our best to make your stay more comfortable.we are a budget hotel where we do our very best to provide maximum comfort and facilities to our guest at real economical rates. that even includes facilities like refrigerator and free wifi to all our guest. we are very particular about cleanliness and bedsheets , towels are double checked prior to usage by our guest. i am surprised that they were not found to be good. infact if a guest has a complaint he has to inform housekeeping and we would have ensured a prompt change. we are here to help. but, if things are not brought to our notice , we are simply unable to do anything about it. Infact our rooms are the most comfortable in the locality among all the budget hotels around. the actual pics are seen on out websites.
we will take up the issue of restaurant pricing with the management as the restaurant is outsourced and not operated by us. thanks for the feedback once again.
