Santiago Beach Resort

Reviewed 9 April 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights. The rooms are spacious (we had a small living area and kitchenette in addition to the bedroom and bathroom) which was nice to spread out in after the smaller hotel rooms we'd been in during the rest of our trip.

The kitchen came equipped with a fridge that was full of bottled water, however our guide advised us not to drink it as he was unsure if it was just re-filled bottles (one of the other girls said she looked at one of the bottles in her fridge and the seal around the cap was broken). Better to buy from one of the nearby stores.

The rooms were clean and the shower was one of the best for hot water and water pressure. Beds and pillows were also comfy in comparison to other hotels we'd stayed in during our trip (we stayed mostly in 3 star accomm).

Pool area was great - get in early to secure a sun lounger though!

Hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk to Baga beach. Plenty of shops, stalls and restaurants nearby along the road to the beach (although our favourite was Baskin Robbins ;)). We didn't eat at the hotel, as there were so many other options nearby.

It was a little concerning when we arrived to be told that our belongings 'aren't safe in your room' but that they offer a locker room on the premises to store your valuables in - supply your own lock or you can hire one for 20 rupees. However, we didnt bother and just kept our backpacks locked in our room and told reception that our room didn't require cleaning and we were fine. On one hand you dont want to hear that your stuff isn't safe at the hotel, but on the other hand is your stuff really safe at any hotel? Better to be forewarned, I think. Also, wouldn't put it past them to just be trying to get another 20 rupees out of each guest either. lol

Most of the staff were pleasant to deal with, except for 1 lady on reception who was quite rude to everyone.

I realise this seems like a mixed review, however our stay was pleasant, we had no security issues and the location was relatively close to the beach. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: On the Friday night there was a guy singing in the pool area for the guests. He was no Michael Buble...

We have not stayed at The Santiago Hotel but we do know several people who have and they all agree that they have enjoyed their stay there . However we have had drinks at the bar the staff are lovely and the surroundings welcoming, my main reason for this review is to comment on Jack the jeweller ( Tiffanys jewellers ) which is on the lane outside the Santiago. Jack is an excellent jeweller who is capable of designing a peice of jewellery for you or make it from your own design. He has made several items for me and this year 3 of my friends had jewellery made and some rings re set . It's my opinion Jack is one of the best jewellers in North Goa not just because of his creativity but because of his honesty and realistic prices. You won't be ripped off by him unlike some other jewellers in the area.

Calangute is very commercialized with lots of obese russian tourists in G strings. I would stir clear in the future. There are nicer beaches in Goa.

If you do decide to stay in Calangute. This hotel is not bad.
Pros:
nice swimming pool, serve drinks by the pool.
Clean rooms, good A/C
Good service
you can get massages in the hotel.
Walking distance to the shopping partying strip or you can take a taxi.

Cons:
No Wifi
Lots and lots of old people. If you are young, stir clear.

Went for 2 weeks in early Dec 2012.... This place is just average really, but what you do get.... is the loveliest staff you have ever met.... I’ve been lucky and have travelled on many Holidays and I’ve never experienced staff so friendly and helpful ever.... basically they wait on you like hand and foot.... something like 7star which I’ve experienced in Kenya.... plus they are all wonderful true, decent people, like David and Paul to name a few.... after a few days they feel like your close friends or family.... they make you feel like gold, and its nice. As it’s a small cosy place really which is nice, you do feel the friendly bond and service more. The food is just amazing.... fresh spices make the most tasty, fresh(not spicy) fantastic curry dishes you will ever taste.... The entertainment is great too.... something very different. Good drinks and the staff are always coming to your table every 15mins asking you would you like another drink....( you can end up with a 4 or 5 drinks going at once lol for which they do most drinks.... you never have to go to bar.... I’ve had an experience of a life time, and there’s plenty to do out and about. All guest are very friendly and you will soon be laughing and joking most evenings when you get settled in... We did and it was great. Like I say, it is India your going to and its basic yes....but the Hotel is spotless and very clean.... You will have a holiday of a lifetime.... tip average price for this hotel 2 week AL £700..... Taxi from Airport to Hotel £10 English give them. Have your own Taxi all day £4 to £8 (I can recommend Paul at the Taxi rank 2mins walk outside) he sweet and kind and fun.... such a true wonderful person and very honest. Take boots 50 deet mozzie spray and u will be fine too.... works well there....Enjoy and I can wait to get back one day... for the Magic of India and this Hotel.

Paul & Bella - stayed Dec/Jan 2013

This was our second all inclusive visit in three years, nothing much had changed. The staff are still friendly and welcoming and cannot do enough for you. If you are looking for a hotel that will look after you the Santiago is the place to be.

The rooms are very basic and do not have much of a view but they are cleaned every day. There is also a minibar in the room which is replenished on a weekly basis. Bottled water and bottled drinks are available from the bar if you want to take them back to your room.

What makes this hotel special is the staff they make sure that you enjoy your stay.

The hotel could do with modernisation/upgrading, don’t get me wrong everything in the hotel is clean and tidy, but nothing has changed in three years since our last visit may be a new colour scheme as the paintwork is starting to look very dated.

The entrance to the hotel is off the main road via a small lane. The first part of the lane is tarmaced then the rest of the lane is uncovered leaving a very uneven surface. When the coach drops you off at the hotel it only drops you off at the main road, this means that you have to use the lane whilst carrying/wheeling your luggage. The un-tarmaced surface makes it almost impossible to wheel your luggage down the lane to the hotel. The lane is also not very well lit at night.

Due to the popularity of the hotel it means that the rooms are in demand, this caused us a problem as we could not keep our room on when we were due to leave. We had to be out of our room by 13.00 hours but our transport to the airport was not due to pick us up until 21.30 hours. This seemed a bit unfair as we had paid from Christmas day but did not actually arrive until Boxing Day, I realise that the hotel needs to allocate rooms but I think that a bit of leeway should be considered. We were given the use of a shower room situated in the office at the rear of the reception desk before we left for the airport.

Although the food is of excellent standard it does get a bit monotonous, however the staff will get you anything you want even if it is not on the menu. There is also the Thai Bazaar restaurant if you fancy a change from the main bar area.

Not much sun around the pool area or on the room balconies. If you really want sun go to the beach. Sun beds are available around the pool but you have to be quick.

Hope that this review helps, we already have booked to go back in Jan 2014 once the New Year celebrations are out of the way

Room Tip: Get a taxi to and from the airport, this saves you having to use the lane (mentioned above) as the t...

Thank you for your comments.
We are undergoing a phase wise renovation program (10-15 rooms per year) and for a same supplement you can get a renovated room. We do provide assistance with luggage if the tour representative calls our reception ahead of arrival
As per our contract with tour operators we guarantee rooms on arrival and all inclusive plans are available till departure. Obviously to meet our commitment we need to prepare the room for arrivals. Incase rooms are available we automatically extend the Check -Out time.
We are working on improving departure wash and change facilities.
