Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 28 December 2013

have stayed at the sterling (vey average) and then at the majestic (excellent property which seems almost out of place in grungy Malacca) we had to move into the Casa del Rio as everything else was full. On arrival we waited for the room but as the hotel is so close to the old China town area of the city we strolled into town for lunch with the kids at the Hard Rock Cafe which again was surprisingly good (kids loved it anyway). The hotel has a huge water feature which would be so much better if it was a swimming pool near the river. The pool is on the roof and is satisfactory (big but a bit soulless for a resort). The hotel has a Marriott vacation resorts feel to it and is even trying to sell rooms in a nearby annexe but the quality of build, decor and riverside restaurant is actually pretty good. I don't think any family would be unhappy here and the staff whilst lacking in some respects were certainly all pretty friendly.

After staying at Casa del Mar in Langkawi, we were curious about the Casa del Rio. We were wondering if the high standard of the Langkawi resort is the same here in Melaka…. and it is!
The Mediterranean style compound is nicely located at the river bank and close to the heart of the Historic city of Melaka. The rooms are very spacious (50sqm) and if you have chosen a room on the river side you have a spectacular view to river and city. One can do almost all site seeing by walking.
The hotel has Restaurant with a terrace overlooking the river. The food is up to the high standard of the hotel. The breakfast is from good quality with a choice of international as well as local dishes. In the evening plays a life band in the bar and you can enjoy the view by listening to the music and sipping on your cocktail. Al in all it’s an impressive hotel and for sure one of the best in Melaka.

Room Tip: Book a room with river view!

We were staying in this Boutique Hotel in Melaka from 16 to 19 Dec 2013 for our annual meeting. It has interesting structure and just beside the Melaka River with good view and walking distance to Jonker Street and also to Hard Rock Cafe, Melaka. Good service from the Hotel Team and good food in their restaurant but the room rate is pricey! Not cheap for the stay in this hotel. Good experience for short stay. Don't forget to take boat ride & preferably with Mr Bernard as the guide during the ride.

We stayed in the Deluxe Room with River View. Our stay was really memorable. Right from the checking in to checking out, everything was hassle free. The staff were helpful for the most part.

There is a small balcony in the room overlooking the river. But the view isn't much really. The best thing about the room may be the space. Lots of room to walk about. Even the bathtub is bigger and deeper than most. But that may be a negative for some too. Bigger room means longer for the room to cool (Malacca is hot and humid most days). Bigger bathtub means longer to fill.

Bed is nice and firm but may be a little too small for the frame? The bedside table is quite a stretch from the mattress.

The TV is big with enough channels to keep you occupied if you care about it. The audio is connected to the DVD player and the sound system is connected throughout the room, even in the toilet. You can be soaking in the tub and not miss a thing on your favourite channel, with excellent audio.

Breakfast was nice. Not excellent but acceptable.

The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is very near to Jonker Walk but not too near till its noisy.

We enjoyed our stay very much and to me its worth every penny we paid. But its not for the budget traveller. Good for the experience.

simply awesome hotel - loved the architecture, the entire decor of the hotel reflects the holiday feel. loved the huge room, with the lovely bathtub. loved the breakfast which is totally amazing. service level from the staff is beyond excellent. i would like compliment a front office staff who graciously showed us to the hotel retail shop even though it was after closing time - after 10pm. He was very nice and patient. In fact all the staff are really friendly. We would definitely return to stay there in future. It is worth every penny and so near to the walking street and tourist sights. an unforgettable experience.

Well built hotel with big rooms and massive bathrooms. The rooftop pool is a nice spot to watch sunset. We were the only ones there then. Its very close to Jonker street and we went to the night market after dinner. Breakfast was truly continental. Loved the gourmet coffee! Will definitely stay here on my next visit. By the way, if you are in Malaka, don't forget to try the 13 state coffee shop serving coffee from 13 states of Malaysia. Their Peranakan food is good too.

First of all, I would like to dearly thank the lovely, friendly and always helpful staff that made our stay so wonderful. They truly know the meaning of hospitality and what it means to accommodate guests. The hotel itself gets 5 stars and if I could score it more just for the staff I would.

Upon arrival you are greeted with beautiful surroundings of a lush blue pool with a fountain in the middle, take a seat and enjoy lovely ginger sorbet to freshen you up while the staff sort out the paperwork. Once the formalities are completed, the staff will take you to your room where you will find a little locally made delicacy to try "delicious"... and you will also be quickly briefed on the location of the gym and pool, the day spa and functions within the guest room.

Rooms are made up twice daily, usually as you head out for breakfast and again in the evening around 6pm. Breakfast was one of the highlights of our stay at Casa Del Rio. Every morning you are greeted with warm smiles and "good mornings" as you enter. The buffet caters for most foreigners and has traditional food also. The guest can help themselves or order a la carte from the menu at no extra cost. I enjoyed the artistry on my latte every morning with a little *hello kitty* face so delicately drawn into my froth. "nice touch".

The pool is an amazing infinity pool so it looks like you could swim right off the edge, but don't stress I assure you it's safe. Combined with fresh towels, plenty of sun beds and a swim up bar, it's very easy to spend a few good hours relaxing with the family and it also provides a great spot to take roof top photos of the surrounding area. Also, compliments to the Day Spa, my wife had three massages and I also experienced one myself. Now, I'm usually a skeptic of what I usually consider a good professional massage, but this was exceptionally good and would definitely pay top dollar for in my own country.

Casa Del Rio is only a very short walk to Jonker St, where street markets cram this tiny area full of locally made tea or "teh tarik", food, like layer cake, chendol, a favorite dessert with the locals and clothing stalls. Try the chicken rice balls, also a favourite. The major shopping malls are also a short 10 to 15min walk or you can be ridden there on a side cart for a very cheap price.

Over all, this was one of my best visits to Malaysia. I have been a few times with my family, and I will always return because of the hospitality. Thank you again Casa Del Rio.

Room Tip: I did stay on level 2, my floors felt solid but I could hear foot steps from the room above at times...
