Great staff. Great room. Just the best time. It's like traveling back in time but everything is in tip top condition. It's hard wood decor. The checkered tile toilet. The little old Chinese snacks laid out around the hotel...so charming.

Room Tip: Just book it

Stayed in this charming hotel for 3 nights, and found it to be an oasis is bustling Malacca. We were expecting Malacca to be more 'old world' then it was (lots of construction, malls and concrete buildings), and after sightseeing it was a real treat to come back to this hotel where one had the illusion of being in the old city!

Room: We had the Majestic suite which was spacious and very comfortable, top floor views of the city, interesting layout of the bathroom in the bedroom- it had no walls! Fine for me and my husband, but could be strange if you were traveling with friends.

Spa: Thoroughly enjoyed the spa here- it is on the small side, so while waiting for your treatment men and women are mixed in the same lounge (in bathrobes)- but other than that, the treatments were excellent.

Food: Good breakfast, nice drinks at the bar/terrace. Wish they put some fans outside though as the veranda area is really the only outdoor area to sit in, and would be more comfortable with fans in the humid weather. Loved doing the cooking course at the hotel, lots of fun and very informative- we got to eat all the delicious dishes afterwards.

Service: Very good. Front desk were well-informed and very helpful. Staff elsewhere were also friendly, warm and efficient enough.

Location: Aside from the old historic houses across the bridge opposite, the sights are quite a bit of a walk away. Doable, but with the heat we took the trishaws (hilarious and fun) or taxis which were reasonably priced.

First of all, let me be clear upfront- we did not stay at this hotel. However I did visit the hotel with a view to eating there. It is a reasonable walk from the historic centre of Malacca, but manageable. What was surprising, and even more surprising given that no recent review refers to this, is the fact that there is a huge building site mega development under construction directly across the road from the hotel (80-100 metres distant). This certainly was enough to make my decision to eat elsewhere. I can only assume that all recent reviewers are unconcerned with their local environment, certainly this would be a no no for me.

Dear Mr Walker,

A very good day to you.

I am disappointed to read that you did not get to have the dining experience with us due to the site development across the road which is beyond our control. Nonetheless, I thank you for having considered us and look forward to your visit in the near future..

Warm regards

After reading raving reviews here, we decided to stay at the Majestic during the Chinese New Year period when we were in town. First impression wasn't perfect as the property seems small upon entering the front hall. We later realised that there was an extension at the back where the rooms were. Upon entering the room, we then realised what the fuss was all about. The room was beautiful and you can tell from the amenities that this was indeed a hidden gem. Only gripe we had was that the spa closes really early.

One other thing that impressed me was that the staff at the front desk call me by my name when i came back to the hotel later that night. There are cookie jars placed around the hotels with delicious cookies and candies which we thought was a great touch. I will highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Malacca.

The city of Melaka has rapidly changed since I last visited sixteen years ago. There are several large build hotels serving the expanding tourist trade with numerous chain names in the running.
The Majestic captures a Melaka of former days. This is evident from the minute of crossing the door. The lobby/ reception area with adjoining sitting rooms are decorated to give a colonial feel.
The spacious bedrooms again reflect the theme. Breakfast is served in a lovely dining room. The level of service was very good and very helpful. The Majestic is not a big city hotel and it appears everybody in the team is there for the clients. The Spa treatments are excellent. Some reviews have been critical of the restaurant. We eat there two our four nights and were not disappointed. The breakfast menu includes a local twist to various egg dishes ( not my favourite point). Lastly this hotel is wedged between a local hospital and a row if local shops at the end of Jalan Bunga Raya. There is a big construction project directly opposite. It's a good fifteen minute walk to the tourist sites. Despite this the Majestic is a world away from the blandness of some corporate hotels. I'd certainly recommend the Majestic for its charm in what is a fast changing Melaka.

Having never been to Melaka itself before, needed somewhere to stay for 2 nights for a weekend away with family who’d been staying with us in Singapore. The Majestic comes highly rated when searching for 5* hotels in Melaka, there aren’t a lot, so it seemed the obvious place to stay.

If you’re driving up, which a lot of us who are based in Singapore may do, the outside of the hotel can be very misleading. From the website and review sites, you expect a ‘Capella’ or ‘Raffles’ style surrounding. Whilst the hotel building itself is like that, its right next door to a very tall hospital, across the river from an even taller building site and by no means set in a serene or quiet location with greenery.

However, that’s Melaka in general, so once you get over the car park, walking through from there and missing out on the entrance, it’s actually very beautiful inside and does have that colonial and serene feeling inside. The reception and front of office staff are all friendly and accommodating. Happy to give you tips and recommendations for places to eat, visit, etc.

The guest rooms are a genuine surprise, and not what you might expect having done the car park walk through experience. Huge bathroom which feels open plan but actually can be screened off by sliding wooden shutters. The separate rain shower is great, as is the free standing deep iron bath. They offer a free of charge bath preparation service, I highly recommend this. The king size four poster bed works a treat too. The rooms are clean, well decorated and large, with a lounge area including a chaise lounge by the window. Having a view across the Melaka river is great, but it is ruined by the enormous building site across the road. Not their fault, but still a shame.

We all used the spa whilst we were there, and again a very pleasant surprise. The treatments on offer are varying, very well done and price wise not too bad. Especially if you consider hotel spas in Singapore. The spa itself matches the colonial decor of the rest of the hotel, and despite the hustle and bustle of the surrounding neighbourhood, is very quiet and you do feel removed and relaxed when in there.

The swimming pool is a shame. Firstly, it’s very small and sandwiched between the old main hotel building and then newer guest room building. I think there were only about 8 - 10 beds around it, which are all squeezed in. When the sun does hit it, the window of sunshine is very small, so all the guests tend to descend on it to either grab a bed or some water time. There were looks of disappointment from guests who kept walking up to it realising there was no space for them. When you see the Ramada and the Casa del Rio with their large rooftop pools, you’d feel hard done by if you’d wanted to get a couple of hours of sun and pool time.

Make sure you include breakfast, as it’s value for money, and a very good choice. Afternoon tea was also good value for money and pleasant experience to add to that colonial feel. WiFi and Internet is free and available throughout the hotel. There are a few blind spots and can be intermittent at times of the day, but all liveable. My other gripe aside from the pool was the prices at the bar. Taking the FX rate as well as prices at local tourist bars in Melaka, the prices are more expensive than some of the hotel bars in Singapore. One beer was as much as you’d expect to pay for a beer at the Post Bar in the Fullerton. That’s a shame, as the bar itself is lovely as is the veranda out the front, and you’re tempted to have a couple of drinks there before heading out for the evening, but when you look at the prices you talk yourself into walking down the road to some of the other places. You simply don’t expect to pay that much in Melaka. A bucket of beers was double some of the riverside bars we visited which is over the top.

Location wise, it’s perfect to drive into and out of Melaka for as it’s not too central so you avoid the endless one way systems. It’s also nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of Jonker Street, and walking to that area of Chinatown is only about 10 minutes down the main road outside the hotel, or about 20 minutes along the paths by the Melaka River. That’s especially great if you want to walk off a large meal from one of the many eateries on Jonker Street which we had to do twice a day…..

I’d stay here again, especially if I’m on a short trip and planning on being out and about a lot and looking for a first class spa. If you’re looking for somewhere to spend a few hours relaxing by the pool for, then this won’t be right for you.

Room Tip: Go for a high floor with view over the Melaka River.

This hotel is essentially an old mansion and retains its old world colonial charm.

Hotel service was very good ... and the rooms were comfortably appointed. This was a great weekend getaway at around what we would have paid for a more average room in Singapore.

The hotel is a 20min walk from jonker street (if you don't get lost) and about the same to the main tourist sites ... just don't get lost. It's actual location is not the best, but is near the bend in the river ... and there are many local food options outside the hotel .

We enjoyed the high tea they served in the afternoon, lounging around and eating slowly.

The dinner was nice too ... and offered some peace from the bustle of malacca. Breakfast is individually cooked, and of good quality.

the pool is tiny ... but ok for a city hotel. My only grouse is that birds like to perch occasionally on the ledges and sometimes their droppings might end up in the pool (I saw once).

The spa was very restful too. Well worth the money.

All in, a pleasant experience I would do again.

Room Tip: River facing views get the afternoon sun.
